Seven suites on a working farm, deep in Colombia's coffee hills

Hacienda Bambusa is a small colonial-style hacienda on a working farm outside Armenia. It is one of the most romantic places to stay in Colombia's Coffee Region. With only seven suites, it feels like staying at a friend's country house: wide verandas, hammocks, a pool among the plantain and cacao trees and a kitchen that cooks with vegetables from the garden.

It suits couples who want quiet nights, good food and easy day trips more than nightlife. The last stretch of the drive is a dirt road. Once you arrive the soundtrack is birds, insects and the occasional rain shower on the roof. Three of the suites have their own private pools on a terrace, which is rare in this part of Colombia.

Bambusa makes a good second stop after Cartagena. The climate is cooler and fresher than the coast, the pace is slower and the money goes much further. Plan on three or four nights so you have time for a coffee farm visit, a morning among the wax palms of the Cocora Valley and at least one day spent doing nothing at the hacienda.

Highlights at a glance

Why Couples Love Hacienda Bambusa

The scale is the appeal. Seven suites means you will share the hacienda with very few other guests. Breakfast on the veranda is unhurried. Staff know your plans for the day before you mention them.

The house follows the traditional style of the region, with timber, verandas that wrap around the building and bright gardens. Around it, the farm still grows plantains and cacao while the green hills of Quindío roll away in every direction. Birdlife is rich, so bring binoculars if either of you has even a passing interest.

Couples often say Bambusa is where their trip slowed down. After the heat and energy of Cartagena, a few days of hammocks, swims and long dinners here feel like a reset before the flight home.

Suites to Book

There are three categories, all with a rural, colonial feel.

  • Junior Suites, four in total, are the entry level, with comfortable beds and access to the hacienda's shared spaces and pool.
  • Private Pool Suites, two in total, add a private terrace with your own swimming pool.
  • The Private Pool Master Suite is the largest room, also with its own terrace and pool.

For a honeymoon, a Private Pool Suite is the clear choice. Having your own water at a small farm hotel is a rare treat. It means you can swim at any hour without seeing anyone else. These suites are few, so book them early, especially for December, January and Easter. A Junior Suite still delivers the setting and the food if you would rather keep the budget for tours and transfers.

Food and Drink

Chef Paula Serna runs the kitchen, cooking with seasonal vegetables from the hacienda's garden and ingredients sourced in the region. Expect Colombian country dishes made with care: soups, slow-cooked meats, fresh river trout, arepas and plenty of tropical fruit. The hacienda can adapt menus for vegetarians or other preferences with notice.

Because Bambusa is rural, most couples eat here most nights, so ask what is included in your rate when you book. Coffee, unsurprisingly, is excellent. Ask the staff about the cacao on the farm; chocolate tastings and farm walks give you a sense of how much grows here beyond coffee. For a night out, Salento and Filandia have casual restaurants, although the drive back on rural roads is best done with a driver.

Things to Do

The hacienda organizes guided outings around the Coffee Region, including places most visitors miss. The classics are worth doing too.

  • Walk among the towering wax palms of the Cocora Valley early in the morning, before the day-trippers arrive.
  • Spend a morning on a family coffee farm, picking, roasting and tasting.
  • Ride a Willys jeep from Salento's plaza and wander its painted streets.
  • Climb the lookout tower in Filandia for sunset views over the hills.
  • Soak in the thermal pools of Santa Rosa de Cabal, a longer day out.

One partner might love a long hike while the other prefers a coffee tasting and a nap. That is easy to arrange here, since the hacienda can set up separate plans and drivers. Leave at least one full day free to enjoy your suite and the gardens.

Getting There

El Edén International Airport (AXM) in Armenia is about 40 minutes from the hacienda, with domestic flights from Bogotá and Medellín. Matecaña International Airport (PEI) in Pereira is a little farther and has more connections. The final section of the road is unpaved, so arrange a transfer through the hacienda rather than driving yourselves on arrival.

Rural roads in Quindío are steep, winding and poorly signed, so a car with a driver is the easiest way to explore. The region is at a moderate altitude with a mild climate, warm by day and cooler at night. Bring a light layer and a rain jacket, since afternoon showers are common. Mosquitoes are around at dusk; if you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices for Colombia.

Is It Worth It?

Yes, for couples who want a small, personal farm stay with a little luxury. A suite here costs far less than a boutique hotel room inside Cartagena's walls. The Private Pool Suites offer a level of privacy that is hard to find in the region.

It is not the right fit if you want to walk to restaurants, bars and shops every evening. Salento and Filandia are a drive away. The hacienda is about quiet. Couples who need a full spa, a gym or room service around the clock should look at larger hotels near Pereira. Those happy with birdsong, good home cooking and long afternoons by the pool will find Bambusa one of the most memorable stays of a Colombia honeymoon.

Insider tips

  1. Book a Private Pool Suite early, since there are only three suites with their own pool.
  2. Arrange your airport transfer through the hacienda; the last stretch is a dirt road.
  3. Do the Cocora Valley at first light and save afternoons for the pool.
  4. Ask about a cacao walk on the farm, a nice change from the usual coffee tour.

FAQ

Hacienda Bambusa questions, answered

Where exactly is Hacienda Bambusa?

The hacienda is on the El Caimo road in Portugalito, outside Armenia in the department of Quindío. It sits on a working farm in rolling green countryside, about 40 minutes from El Edén International Airport (AXM). Salento, Filandia and the Cocora Valley are all within day-trip distance, best reached with a driver.

Do the suites have private pools?

Three of the seven do. The two Private Pool Suites and the Private Pool Master Suite each have a terrace with their own swimming pool. The four Junior Suites share the hacienda's main pool, which is set among the gardens and plantain trees. For a honeymoon, the private pool suites are worth the extra cost.

How much does Hacienda Bambusa cost?

Junior Suites typically start at roughly $300 a night for two, with private pool suites higher. Prices vary with the season and the meal plan. Holidays such as Christmas and Easter cost more. Treat these figures as approximate estimates and confirm current rates directly with the hacienda, which handles bookings through its own website.

Can we eat all our meals at the hacienda?

Yes. Chef Paula Serna's kitchen cooks with produce from the hacienda's garden and local ingredients. Most couples eat here most evenings because the hacienda is rural. Ask when you book which meals your rate includes. The staff can also suggest restaurants in Salento or Filandia and arrange a driver if you want a night out.

How many nights should we spend in the Coffee Region?

Three or four nights works well. That gives you time for the Cocora Valley, a coffee farm visit and a day trip to Salento or Filandia, plus at least one full day at the hacienda. Add a night near the Santa Rosa de Cabal hot springs if you have time. Many couples pair it with Cartagena and a beach stay.
