Why August Works for a Honeymoon
For late-summer weddings, August is a natural honeymoon month. The world offers plenty of reasons to go. Safari conditions in East and southern Africa are about as good as they get. The South Pacific is dry and breezy, while Indonesia's islands enjoy reliable sunshine.
It is also a terrific month for cool-weather escapes. While much of the US swelters, Iceland, the Canadian Rockies and the Poconos offer fresh air and long evenings. And as the month ends, summer gives way to the first hints of autumn, with dark skies returning in the north and harvest beginning in wine country.
The main challenge is demand. August is a vacation month for Europeans and many Americans, so the most sought-after lodges and resorts are often booked far ahead.
Our Top Picks for August
The Serengeti is our top safari choice. From roughly July to October, the migration typically reaches the northern Serengeti, where herds may cross the Mara River. Crossings are unpredictable, so many couples combine a few nights at a seasonal camp in the far north with a stay at a classic lodge. Both Singita Sasakwa Lodge (overlooking the Grumeti Reserve) and Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti (in the central park) offer superb year-round game.
Sabi Sand is South Africa's leopard heartland. August falls in the middle of its dry winter season, when vegetation thins and animals gather near water. Singita Boulders Lodge, on the Sand River, is one of Africa's most celebrated lodges. So is Londolozi Game Reserve, run by the same family since 1926. Mornings and evenings are chilly on open vehicles, so pack layers.
Sumba is in its dry season, with golden savannas, sunny skies and the island's best surf. Nihi Sumba, above the white sand of Nihiwatu Beach, is a barefoot-luxury retreat that pairs beautifully with a few days in Bali.
Bora Bora is dry, sunny and in whale season, with humpbacks typically present around French Polynesia from about July to October. Book an overwater bungalow at Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora, The St. Regis Bora Bora Resort or Conrad Bora Bora Nui.
The Reykjanes Peninsula offers a unique late-summer double: lingering daylight for exploring and, by late August, nights dark enough for possible early aurora sightings. The Retreat at Blue Lagoon sits within a moss-covered lava field and offers a private section of the lagoon.
Banff & Lake Louise are in peak summer, with turquoise water, open trails and canoeing at Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise. BASIN Glacial Waters, the hotel's thermal bathing experience, is a lovely way to end a day of hiking.
For a no-passport escape, the Poconos are warm and green, which makes for easy lake days. Cove Haven Resort, a kid-free all-inclusive on Lake Wallenpaupack, is a nostalgic, playful choice.
Weather & Crowds
On safari, August days are generally sunny and mild, with cold early mornings, especially in South Africa. Bali and Sumba are dry and warm. French Polynesia is breezy and sunny, with highs typically in the upper 70s to low 80s Fahrenheit.
Iceland is cool, usually in the 50s Fahrenheit, with changeable weather. Banff is warm by day and cool at night. The Poconos are warm and humid, with summer thunderstorms possible.
Crowds are among the highest of the year in Europe, the Rockies and Africa. In the Caribbean and Mexico, August is quieter and cheaper, reflecting hurricane risk.
Where to Avoid (or Go Anyway)
The Caribbean and Mexico, from Grace Bay and Antigua to the Riviera Maya, Tulum and Los Cabos, enter the peak of hurricane season. Many days are still sunny and rates fall, but storms can disrupt travel. If you go, choose flexible bookings, consider insurance and read the policy terms carefully. Keep an eye on forecasts, too. Some resorts close for maintenance in late summer, so confirm your property's dates.
The Maldives remain in their southwest monsoon, though Hanifaru Bay manta season is still going. Phuket and Krabi are rainy, Costa Rica and Belize are wet and Sedona is in monsoon season. Chiang Rai & the Golden Triangle are in the rainy season too.
Festivals & Seasonal Moments
- The Perseid meteor shower peaks around mid-August; dark-sky destinations like Southern Utah, Sedona and Big Sur can offer great viewing, so plan one late night on a blanket together.
- Mara River crossings are possible in the northern Serengeti.
- Ferragosto, August 15, is a major Italian holiday, with crowded beaches and some city businesses closed.
- Indonesia celebrates Independence Day on August 17 with village festivities across Bali.
- Napa Valley's harvest typically begins in late August.
- Antigua's Carnival culminates in early August. Reykjavík's Culture Night usually takes place in late August.
Booking Tips
For safari, plan as early as possible, ideally nine to twelve months ahead. Ask your planner about combining a migration-focused camp with a classic lodge. Allow enough nights in the north to improve your odds of a crossing.
In French Polynesia, compare package offers, as August is peak season. For Iceland, book accommodations well in advance, as summer demand is high.
If you are tempted by a Caribbean deal, look for flexible cancellation policies and resorts with strong weather guarantees. Read the fine print carefully.
