What Makes a Great Honeymoon Beach Resort
Beyond the obvious, a few qualities separate a good beach resort from a great one for couples. The first is the beach itself: is it calm and swimmable, or better for walking and watching the surf? The second is space, meaning enough sand and enough loungers that you never feel crowded. The third is atmosphere. Some couples love a social pool and live music; others want the sound of waves and little else.
Kid-free areas help bridge the gap at larger resorts. Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea has its Serenity Pool and Four Seasons Resort Costa Rica at Peninsula Papagayo has its Serena Pool. Grace Bay Club in Turks & Caicos keeps its 22-suite Hotel Building for kid-free. At smaller places, such as Hermitage Bay in Antigua or Tokoriki Island Resort in Fiji, the entire resort is grown-up.
The Caribbean
Jamaica offers range. Couples Swept Away sits on Negril's famous Seven Mile Beach and is couples-only and all-inclusive, with tips, transfers and a huge sports complex included. Jamaica Inn in Ocho Rios is the opposite in mood, a family-run classic since 1958 with a private golden crescent of sand, blue-and-white verandahs and no TVs. Sandals Royal Caribbean near Montego Bay, reopening December 18, 2026, as Sandals Jamaica Caribbean Cay, adds a private offshore island.
Saint Lucia brings drama. Anse Chastanet has a dark-sand beach with a protected reef you can snorkel from shore. Sugar Beach, A Viceroy Resort occupies a pale-sand beach directly between the two Pitons. Up north, Sandals Grande St. Lucian, now Sandals St. Lucia Grand Bay, has a long beach on calm Rodney Bay. In Antigua, Hermitage Bay has its own secluded bay, while Curtain Bluff sits between two beaches, one calm and one breezier. Grace Bay Club claims about 1,100 feet of one of the Caribbean's most celebrated beaches.
Mexico and Costa Rica
On the Riviera Maya, El Dorado Maroma has one of the region's widest stretches of sand, plus overwater bungalows, at a kid-free, all-inclusive resort. Hotel Xcaret Arte offers a compact, swimmable beach and sheltered inlet alongside its art workshops and park access. Be Tulum sits on Tulum's quieter southern hotel strip near the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve.
On the Pacific side, Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita occupies the tip of a gated peninsula on Banderas Bay, with oceanfront casitas and winter whale watching from shore. In Guanacaste, Four Seasons Resort Costa Rica at Peninsula Papagayo straddles a narrow isthmus with a beach on each side, so you can choose the calmer one depending on the day.
Hawaii
Hawaii needs no passport and offers some of the most reliable beach weather anywhere. Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea sits right on Wailea Beach, with views to Lānaʻi and nightly torch-lighting at sunset. Montage Kapalua Bay is a residential-style resort on West Maui's rocky point between two bays, with roomy one- to four-bedroom residences and snorkeling in Kapalua Bay.
On quiet Lānaʻi, Four Seasons Resort Lanai overlooks Hulopoʻe Bay, a marine conservation area where spinner dolphins often rest in the mornings. It pairs beautifully with a few nights at its upland sister, which makes for a beach-and-spa honeymoon on one small island.
Farther Afield
Beach honeymoons are not limited to the tropics you know. In Fiji, every bure at Tokoriki Island Resort faces west for sunset. In Mykonos, Santa Marina, a Luxury Collection Resort, Mykonos has its own sandy cove on Ornos Bay, one of the calmer spots when summer winds blow. On Sumba, Nihi Sumba combines a wild white-sand beach with surfing, horseback riding and three Michelin Keys.
In Thailand, Rayavadee is reached only by boat and has three beaches at its door, including Phranang, framed by limestone cliffs. Off Zanzibar, &Beyond Mnemba Island is a barefoot private island where only lodge guests may land. And for something entirely different, the Wickaninnish Inn sits on Chesterman Beach near Tofino in British Columbia, where winter storm watching from a deep soaking tub is the point and rain gear is provided.
How to Choose Your Beach
- Swimmable or scenic? Calm bays such as Rodney Bay, Hulopoʻe Bay and Ornos Bay are ideal for swimming. Some Pacific and surf beaches are better admired from a lounger.
- Sand color. White and pale sand dominate the Caribbean, but Anse Chastanet has darker volcanic sand. Neither is better; just know what to expect.
- Seaweed. The Caribbean coast of Mexico can see sargassum roughly from late spring through summer. Winter and early spring usually bring the clearest water.
- Crowds. Public beaches, like those around Rayavadee, are busiest midday. Plan beach time early or late.
- Inclusions. Couples Swept Away, El Dorado Maroma, Hotel Xcaret Arte, Hermitage Bay and Curtain Bluff are all-inclusive, which suits couples who want to stay put.
When to Go
The Caribbean and Mexico are typically at their best from about December through April, with hurricane season running June through November and lower prices in summer. Hawaii is pleasant year-round, though winter is whale season and brings bigger surf on some north-facing shores. Fiji is drier from roughly May through October, Thailand's Andaman coast from about November to April and the Greek islands from late spring to early fall. Book beachfront categories early for peak months, as they always sell first.
