Overwater Bungalows

A ladder off your deck, a lagoon below the glass and nothing between you and the horizon.

30 stays
Original illustration

There is a particular kind of quiet that only exists over water. You wake to light rippling across the ceiling, step onto a deck warm from the sun and climb down a ladder into a lagoon so clear you can count the fish around your toes. For many couples, an overwater bungalow is the honeymoon image they have carried around for years. It is one of the few travel fantasies that genuinely lives up to the photographs.

This collection gathers the overwater stays we list across the Maldives, French Polynesia, Fiji, Mexico, Belize and Jamaica. They range from barefoot thatched villas reached by speedboat to private-pool water villas with glass-bottom bathtubs. They also range from the long-haul icons of Baa Atoll and Bora Bora to options a single flight from most US cities. Below, we explain how the destinations differ, what to look for in the villa itself, when the water is at its best and the booking details that quietly make or break the experience.

What Makes Overwater Living Special

The magic is in the proximity. In a beach villa the sea is a short walk away; over the water it is beneath you, around you and, through a glass floor panel, sometimes in the middle of your living room. Many bungalows have a ladder or steps straight into the lagoon, so your morning swim starts before coffee and your evening snorkel ends with a hot outdoor shower.

It is also unusually private. Villas are spread along jetties and decks usually face open water rather than neighbors. At night you hear waves against the pilings rather than people. That combination of privacy and immediacy is why overwater stays are so closely tied to honeymoons. The best ones layer on small rituals that feel designed for two: a breakfast delivered by outrigger canoe at Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora, a roof terrace with a star bed at Gili Lankanfushi, or a retractable roof over the bed at Soneva Jani for stargazing without leaving the covers.

The Maldives: The Deepest Bench

No destination offers more choice. The Maldives model of one resort per island means your lagoon is shared only with other guests. Seven of our listings sit here, each with a distinct personality.

  • Soneva Jani in Noonu Atoll pairs water villas with private pools and slides into the lagoon, plus an overwater observatory restaurant.
  • Gili Lankanfushi in North Malé Atoll is entirely overwater, about 20 minutes from the airport by speedboat, with driftwood-and-thatch villas and a personal butler for every villa.
  • COMO Cocoa Island in South Malé Atoll has just 33 overwater villas, many shaped like traditional dhoni boats, plus a long sandbank for picnics.
  • Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi gives every villa a private pool and adds big-resort dining, all reached by boat rather than seaplane.
  • Conrad Maldives Rangali Island in Ari Atoll has the famous Ithaa undersea restaurant and an adults-oriented island of water villas.
  • In Baa Atoll, Anantara Kihavah Maldives Villas offers glass-bottom bathtubs and an underwater restaurant, while Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Landaa Giraavaru will phone your villa when manta rays gather at nearby Hanifaru Bay in season.

French Polynesia and Fiji: The South Pacific Originals

The overwater bungalow is widely credited to French Polynesia. Bora Bora remains the definitive backdrop: a turquoise lagoon wrapped around the dark, jagged peak of Mount Otemanu. Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora and The St. Regis Bora Bora Resort both face the mountain from motus on the eastern lagoon, the St. Regis with especially large villas and its own snorkeling Lagoonarium. Conrad Bora Bora Nui sits in a sheltered cove on Motu To'opua with a hilltop spa. InterContinental Bora Bora Resort & Thalasso Spa closed for a full renovation in June 2026 with no published reopening date, so check its official site before planning around it.

On neighboring Moorea, Hilton Moorea Lagoon Resort & Spa puts overwater bungalows in front of green volcanic peaks, a short ferry ride or flight from Tahiti and a gentle first stop before Bora Bora. In Fiji, Likuliku Lagoon Resort in the Mamanuca Islands introduced the country's first overwater bures, with glass floors, a kid-free policy and meals included in the rate.

Closer to Home: Mexico, Belize and Jamaica

If two long-haul flights each way feel like too much for your time off, the Caribbean side of the Americas has a small but growing set of overwater options. El Dorado Maroma on the Riviera Maya offers its Palafitos, overwater bungalows with glass floors, private plunge pools and butler service, at a kid-free, all-inclusive resort roughly 30 to 40 minutes from Cancún. Set expectations accordingly: this is the open Caribbean, often more aqua than electric blue. The sea can be choppier than a South Pacific lagoon.

In Belize, Cayo Espanto is a tiny private island with seven villas (one of them the overwater Casa Ventanas) and all meals included. In Jamaica, Sandals Royal Caribbean pioneered Caribbean overwater villas near Montego Bay; it reopens on December 18, 2026, as Sandals Jamaica Caribbean Cay after a full redesign, so search under the new name. Saint Lucia's Sandals Grande St. Lucian, now Sandals St. Lucia Grand Bay, also has overwater bungalows on Rodney Bay.

How to Choose Your Bungalow

Once you have picked a resort, the villa category matters more than almost anything else. A few questions help narrow it down.

  • Sunset or sunrise? Sunset-facing villas usually cost more and suit couples who live on their deck in the evening. Sunrise villas are often quieter and better value.
  • Pool or no pool? A plunge pool is lovely on windless afternoons and adds privacy, but the lagoon is your real pool. At Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi and Anantara Kihavah Maldives Villas every villa has one; elsewhere it is an upgrade.
  • How far out? Villas at the end of a jetty feel more secluded but mean longer walks to dinner. Some resorts offer bicycles or buggies.
  • What is under the deck? Ask if you can snorkel straight from your ladder or if the house reef is a short swim away.
  • What is the view? In Bora Bora, an Otemanu-view category is the classic shot. It is worth confirming in writing.

When to Go

Timing depends on the region. The Maldives is typically at its sunniest and calmest from about December through April, with a wetter southwest monsoon roughly May through October; that green season often brings lower rates and, in Baa Atoll, the manta gatherings at Hanifaru Bay. French Polynesia and Fiji run the other way: the drier, breezier months are roughly May through October, while November through April is warmer and wetter.

On the Caribbean coast of Mexico, Belize and Jamaica, winter and early spring generally bring the clearest water and the least chance of sargassum seaweed, which can affect beaches from late spring into summer. Hurricane season runs June through November. Wherever you go, book peak-season overwater categories early, since most resorts have far fewer water villas than land rooms.

Booking Tips and Practicalities

Budget for the transfer. Many Maldives resorts are reached by seaplane, which flies only in daylight and is usually priced per person; Gili Lankanfushi, COMO Cocoa Island and Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi use boats instead, which frees you from seaplane schedules and luggage weight limits. In Bora Bora, resort boats meet flights at the airport.

Price a meal plan. On a private island every meal is on property and à la carte dining adds up quickly. Compare half-board or full-board packages. Likuliku Lagoon Resort includes meals, while El Dorado Maroma, Cayo Espanto and the Sandals properties are all-inclusive.

Use points if you have them. Conrad, Hilton and Waldorf Astoria properties sit within Hilton Honors and The St. Regis Bora Bora Resort within Marriott Bonvoy, which can soften the cost of a splurge. Finally, tell the resort it is your honeymoon when you book; it helps them plan the small surprises that make the stay feel personal.

FAQ

Overwater Bungalows: your questions

Where are the best overwater bungalows for a honeymoon?

The Maldives and Bora Bora offer the widest choice and the most dramatic lagoons. In the Maldives, look at Soneva Jani, Gili Lankanfushi and COMO Cocoa Island for intimacy, or Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi for big-resort dining. In Bora Bora, Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora and The St. Regis Bora Bora Resort deliver the classic Mount Otemanu view.

Are there overwater bungalows closer to the United States?

Yes. El Dorado Maroma on Mexico's Riviera Maya, Cayo Espanto in Belize and the Sandals overwater villas in Jamaica and Saint Lucia are all a short flight from many US cities. The Caribbean sea tends to be choppier and less glassy than a South Pacific lagoon, but you save a long-haul flight and a day or more of travel each way.

Is an overwater bungalow worth the extra cost over a beach villa?

For most honeymooners, at least a few nights over the water is worth it, because the experience is so different from any hotel room. If budget is tight, split your stay: two or three nights overwater and the rest in a beach villa at the same resort. Many couples find that combination gives them the best of both.

Can you snorkel straight from an overwater bungalow?

Often, yes, since most decks have a ladder into the lagoon. How much you see depends on the resort. Some villas sit over sandy shallows, while others are a short swim from a house reef. Ask the resort which jetty or villa numbers are closest to the best coral before you book.

How do you get to an overwater resort in the Maldives?

You fly into Velana International Airport near Malé, where the resort meets you for a seaplane, speedboat or domestic flight. Seaplanes fly only in daylight, so a late international arrival may mean a night near the airport. Transfers are usually charged separately and per person, so factor them into your budget.
