Why November Works for a Honeymoon
November is a month for couples who would rather follow a moment than a crowd. Japan's autumn color, northern Thailand's cool season and the Seychelles' calm seas are all genuine reasons to travel. None of them involve the packed beaches of peak summer or the holiday premiums of late December.
It is also a good month for value. Many beach destinations sit between their low and peak seasons. The weeks before Thanksgiving can be relatively quiet. Flights to Asia and Africa are often more reasonable than in the busiest months.
The one exception to plan around is Thanksgiving week in the US, which brings a spike in demand and prices for both domestic and nearby international destinations.
Our Top Picks for November
Kyoto is our first choice. Autumn foliage typically peaks from mid-November into early December, as maples blaze across temple gardens and hillsides. Many temples hold special evening illuminations. Hoshinoya Kyoto, on the river in Arashiyama, looks across slopes that turn crimson in November, while Aman Kyoto's forest garden is a hushed escape. Book early; this is as popular as cherry-blossom season.
Hakone, about two hours away, is the obvious pairing. Brilliant foliage colors the mountains from late October into November. Soaking in a private onsen at Gora Kadan as the leaves fall is the essence of a Japanese honeymoon.
Chiang Rai & the Golden Triangle begin their cool, dry season in November. Four Seasons Tented Camp Golden Triangle, an all-inclusive camp in the bamboo jungle above the Ruak River, offers ethical elephant experiences and Mekong views. Pack layers, as evenings can be cool.
Los Cabos settles into its comfortable season, with warm, dry days and cooler evenings. Esperanza, Auberge Collection and Las Ventanas al Paraíso, A Rosewood Resort are both superb. From roughly November, San José del Cabo's Thursday Art Walk makes a fun date night.
Sedona remains in its fall prime, with mild days and cool nights for hiking and stargazing. Enchantment Resort and L'Auberge de Sedona are wonderful choices.
Fairbanks enters winter, with long nights and snow. Borealis Basecamp's winter packages typically begin in mid-November. Its clear-roofed rooms let you watch for the aurora from bed.
The Cape Winelands welcome early summer. Babylonstoren, with its celebrated garden and farm-to-table restaurant, is a beautiful base for wine tasting and long lunches.
Finally, Praslin & La Digue and the Seychelles Private Islands are in their calm transition window, with excellent snorkeling and gentle seas. Raffles Seychelles, North Island and Six Senses Zil Pasyon are all superb choices.
Weather & Crowds
Kyoto and Hakone are crisp and cool, with comfortable days and chilly nights. Northern Thailand is warm by day and cool at night. Los Cabos and Sedona are mild and dry. Fairbanks is cold and snowy, with temperatures often well below freezing.
The Seychelles are warm and calm, while the Cape Winelands are warm and sunny.
Crowds are heavy in Kyoto during peak foliage. Yi Peng draws large crowds in northern Thailand too. Elsewhere, November is relatively calm until Thanksgiving week.
Where to Avoid (or Go Anyway)
Bali's wet season begins in November, affecting Ubud, Uluwatu and Sumba. Showers are often in the afternoon and rates drop, but it is not the best time for a beach-focused honeymoon. Koh Samui is in its wettest stretch, with November usually the rainiest month; choose Phuket or Krabi, which are entering their dry season.
Most hotels in Santorini, Mykonos, Amalfi and Lake Como close for the season by early November, though Passalacqua offers fall and winter programs. Newfoundland's Fogo Island Inn typically closes around November 1. The Pacific Northwest is wet and gray, best for cozy cabin stays.
Festivals & Seasonal Moments
- Loy Krathong and Yi Peng are usually held around the full moon in November, when floating candles and sky lanterns light up northern Thailand.
- Kyoto's autumn foliage season brings evening temple illuminations.
- Mexico celebrates Day of the Dead on November 1 and 2; Xcaret Park in the Riviera Maya, next to Hotel Xcaret Arte, typically hosts a festival honoring the tradition.
- The Turks & Caicos Conch Festival is usually held in November.
- The Atlantic hurricane season officially ends on November 30.
- Tuscany's white truffle season continues, with truffle fairs in San Miniato on November weekends.
Booking Tips
For Kyoto's autumn colors, book hotels as early as possible and plan several nights to catch peak foliage, which varies by year. For northern Thailand, book well ahead if you want to be there for Yi Peng and confirm event details locally.
If you are considering the Caribbean, late November can be a sweet spot of improving weather and pre-holiday rates.
Avoid Thanksgiving week if you want lower prices and calmer airports.
