The short answer

Greece is the classic Mediterranean honeymoon: cliff-top cave suites on Santorini, beaches on Mykonos and a night or two in Athens for the Acropolis. Go late May, June, September or early October for warm seas without the July and August crush; most island hotels close November–March. Plan ten to fourteen nights. Boutique hotels run roughly $300–700 a night, with caldera suites often well over $1,000 in peak summer. Quieter Milos, Paros or Folegandros suit couples who would rather swim than jostle for a sunset spot. Don't miss a caldera catamaran cruise.

Best for
  • Couples who want island hopping and sunsets
  • Fans of plunge-pool boutique suites
  • Food, wine and history lovers
Maybe skip it if
  • You want a winter island trip
  • Crowds and steep stairs wear you down

Greece has had about three thousand years of practice at welcoming travelers. It shows. This is a country of sun-bleached islands scattered across an impossibly blue sea, of whitewashed villages tumbling down volcanic cliffs, of long lunches under grapevines and evenings that stretch past midnight. It is also a place of extraordinary history, where you can stand among ancient temples in the morning and sip cocktails above the caldera by sunset.

For American honeymooners, the Greek islands offer a hard-to-resist combination: famous scenery, excellent boutique hotels with private plunge pools, superb food and wine and relatively easy access through Athens. Most couples start with the two Cyclades islands that define the Greek honeymoon. Santorini has cliff-top cave suites and famous sunsets; Mykonos has golden beaches, glamorous dining and lively energy. Combine them with a night or two in Athens and you have the classic route. If you would rather swim than jostle for a sunset spot, quieter islands such as Milos, Paros and Folegandros, big and varied Crete, green Corfu and the mainland harbor town of Nafplio all make excellent alternatives or add-ons.

Why Greece for Your Honeymoon

Greece delivers romance on several levels at once. The scenery is the obvious draw: whitewashed villages, cliffs and coves you will recognize from a thousand photos. But it is the rhythm of daily life that wins couples over, from slow breakfasts on a terrace to afternoons on a boat and late dinners where nobody rushes you out.

The hotel scene is a major advantage. Santorini and Mykonos have some of the most romantic small hotels in Europe, many with private pools or hot tubs on the terrace and attentive, personal service. Add deep history, warm hospitality, excellent seafood and a growing reputation for fine wine. It is easy to see why Greece remains a perennial favorite for honeymooners from the US.

Best Time to Visit

The island season runs roughly from April or May to October. Many hotels on Santorini and Mykonos close from about November to March, so winter is not the time for an island honeymoon.

Late May, June, September and early October are the sweet spots, with warm days, swimmable seas and fewer crowds than midsummer. July and August are the hottest and busiest months, with peak prices, bigger crowds and, especially in the Cyclades, the strong meltemi winds that can make sea crossings choppy. April and late October are calmer and good value, though the sea is cooler; look for hotels with heated pools. Athens is pleasant in spring and fall, but can be very hot in midsummer.

Top Honeymoon Destinations

Santorini is the island of superlatives: a flooded volcanic caldera ringed by cliff-top villages like Oia and Imerovigli, with sunset views people cross oceans to see. It is the place for cave suites with private plunge pools, wine tastings of mineral Assyrtiko, catamaran cruises and dinners overlooking the volcano. Our favorite stays include Katikies Santorini, Canaves Oia Epitome and Grace Hotel in Imerovigli. Beaches are limited, so think pools and boats rather than sand.

Mykonos complements Santorini with beaches. Its south coast is lined with golden coves and its Chora is a maze of whitewashed lanes and boutiques. Its dining scene is one of the liveliest in the Aegean. The sacred island of Delos is a short boat ride away. Cavo Tagoo (with its famous infinity pool above the Old Port) and Santa Marina (with its private sandy cove on Ornos Bay) are standout honeymoon choices.

Beyond the big two, the choice widens. Milos has some of the best swimming in the Cyclades, with sea caves you reach by boat. Paros pairs a lively harbor village with easy beaches and good ferry links. Folegandros is tiny and quiet, with a cliff-top village and almost no traffic. Crete is big enough for a week of its own, from Venetian Chania to the private-pool resorts of Elounda. Corfu, in the Ionian Sea, is green and Venetian in feel. On the mainland, Nafplio combines a pretty harbor town with ancient theaters and wine country about two hours from Athens.

How Long to Stay & Sample Itinerary

Ten to fourteen nights is ideal for a Greek honeymoon, giving you time to settle into each place without spending your trip in transit. A classic itinerary looks like this:

  • Nights 1 to 2: Athens, to recover from jet lag, visit the Acropolis and enjoy rooftop dinners with views of the Parthenon
  • Nights 3 to 7: Santorini, with a caldera cruise, winery visit, Akrotiri and plenty of time at your hotel
  • Nights 8 to 12: Mykonos, for beaches, a boat day, Delos and sunset in Little Venice
  • Night 13: Athens or fly home via a European hub

With only a week, choose one island, or split three nights each between Santorini and Mykonos. Ferries and short flights connect the islands in summer.

Budget & Costs

Greece can be enjoyed at many price points, but island honeymoons at top hotels are a splurge. These ranges are approximate and vary widely by season:

  • Luxury caldera or beach hotels: often well over $1,000 per night in peak summer for a suite with a private pool and considerably more for villas; shoulder-season rates can be noticeably lower
  • Boutique mid-range hotels: roughly $300 to $700 per night
  • Dinner for two at a high-end restaurant with wine: often $200 to $400 or more
  • Private catamaran or yacht charter: from several hundred to a few thousand dollars per day

Book top hotels early and consider traveling in June or September for better value. Look for perks such as breakfast, credits and upgrades through travel advisors or loyalty programs.

Practical Tips for US Travelers

In summer, there are nonstop flights from New York and several other US hubs to Athens (ATH); from there, Santorini and Mykonos are short flights or ferry rides away. The currency is the euro. Cards are widely accepted, though it is useful to carry some cash for taxis and small tavernas. English is widely spoken in tourist areas.

Summer winds can delay or cancel island ferries, so plan your last night before the flight home in Athens rather than on an island. Taxis are scarce on the islands in high season, so book transfers through your hotel. Expect lots of stairs on Santorini and pack light, ideally in soft bags. Tipping is appreciated but modest: rounding up or leaving around 5 to 10 percent for good restaurant service is typical.

Culture & Etiquette

Greeks are famously hospitable. A few words of Greek go a long way. Kalimera means good morning, efharisto means thank you and yamas is the toast you will hear over every glass of wine. Dining is relaxed and social. Locals often eat dinner late, from around 9 p.m. Sharing plates and lingering over meals is the norm.

When visiting churches and monasteries, dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees. Respect the ancient sites, too; climbing on ruins or removing stones is prohibited. Many Greeks are Orthodox Christians. Religious festivals, especially Easter, are major events with feasts and celebrations. If your trip coincides with a village festival, join in. You may find yourselves dancing until dawn.

Rural villages are more traditional, so read the room with public affection there, as any couple would.

FAQ

Greece honeymoon FAQ

Is Santorini or Mykonos better for a honeymoon?

They offer different experiences, which is why many couples visit both. Santorini is all about caldera views, cliffside cave suites and sunsets, with few sandy beaches. Mykonos has golden beaches, boat days, buzzing restaurants and nightlife. If you can choose only one, pick Santorini for pure romance and Mykonos for beaches and social energy.

What is the best month for a Greece honeymoon?

June and September are hard to beat, with warm weather, warm seas and all hotels and restaurants open, without the extreme crowds and prices of July and August. Late May and early October are also lovely and better value, though the sea is cooler. Most island hotels close from roughly November to March.

How many days do we need for a Greek honeymoon?

Plan ten to fourteen nights for a relaxed trip that includes Athens, Santorini and Mykonos. With a week, focus on one or two islands, spending at least three nights in each. Moving too often eats into your time, as ferries and flights between islands, plus transfers, can take half a day.

How do we get from the US to the Greek islands?

Fly to Athens, nonstop from several US cities in summer or via a European hub year-round. From Athens, take a short domestic flight or a ferry to Santorini or Mykonos. Ferries and short flights also connect the two islands in season, so you can fly into one and out of the other.

Which quieter Greek islands suit a honeymoon?

Milos is the pick for couples who mostly want to swim, with boat trips to sea caves and boathouse rooms right on the water. Paros is livelier but still relaxed, with a pretty harbor village and easy ferry links. Folegandros is small and very quiet, with a cliff-top village made for evening walks. For a longer trip, Crete offers both the old town of Chania and luxury resorts around Elounda.

Are Greek island hotels suitable for couples who want privacy?

Yes. Many of the best honeymoon hotels on Santorini and Mykonos offer suites with private plunge pools or hot tubs on secluded terraces. Several limit stays to adults or older children. Booking a suite with private outdoor space makes a big difference, especially in high season when shared pools and villages are busy.
