Why June Works for a Honeymoon
If your wedding is in late May or June, timing is on your side. Many of the world's great honeymoon regions are entering their prime: the dry season in Fiji, French Polynesia and Bali; safari season in Tanzania and South Africa; summer in Iceland, Canada and the Mediterranean.
June also tends to be a little calmer than July and August in Europe and North America, before school holidays fully kick in. That means slightly better availability and, in some places, more reasonable rates. The long daylight hours are an underrated bonus: in Iceland and Newfoundland you can hike after dinner, while in the Aegean you can stretch sunset drinks well into the evening.
Do plan early. June is one of the busiest months for honeymoon travel. The best overwater bungalows, safari lodges and cliffside suites fill quickly.
Our Top Picks for June
The Golden Circle & South Coast of Iceland are glorious in June. Near-24-hour daylight means you can visit Þingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss, then chase South Coast waterfalls at midnight with hardly anyone around. Puffins typically nest on the cliffs in summer. ION Adventure Hotel, set in a lava landscape near Lake Þingvallavatn, makes a striking base.
The Serengeti is our June safari pick. Roughly from May to July, the migrating herds move through the Western Corridor and cross the Grumeti River. Singita Sasakwa Lodge, a hilltop manor in the private Grumeti Reserve, is perfectly positioned and wonderfully romantic. Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti, built around a busy watering hole in the central park, is another excellent base.
Mykonos is ideal in June, with warm water, long days and a lively but not frantic atmosphere. Our two picks: Cavo Tagoo Mykonos (terraced into a cliff facing the sunset) and Santa Marina, a Luxury Collection Resort, Mykonos (set above sheltered Ornos Bay).
Uluwatu is in prime season, with dry weather, reliable sunsets and the best surf on Bali's west-facing breaks. Bulgari Resort Bali sits high above the Indian Ocean with an inclinator to the beach, while Alila Villas Uluwatu offers striking clifftop architecture.
The Yasawa Islands are dry, sunny and calm. Manta rays generally gather in the channels from about May to October. Turtle Island, a kid-free all-inclusive with just 14 bures, is a classic honeymoon choice; book far ahead.
Newfoundland is at its most surprising in June, when icebergs drift along the northeast coast and whales arrive to feed. Fogo Island Inn, perched on the rocky North Atlantic shore, is unlike any other hotel in North America.
Finally, Banff & Lake Louise come into their own in late June, when the lake thaws to turquoise and canoes return to the water at Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise. Early June can still see ice, so aim for the second half of the month.
Weather & Crowds
In Iceland, June days are long and cool, usually in the 50s Fahrenheit, with fast-changing weather. In the Rockies and Newfoundland, expect mild days and chilly evenings. The Greek islands are warm and sunny, often in the upper 70s to 80s Fahrenheit.
East Africa's dry season brings sunny days and cool mornings, especially on the high ground around Ngorongoro Crater. Bali and Fiji are warm and dry, with comfortable nights.
Crowds rise steadily through June. European destinations get busier toward the end of the month. US national parks become crowded around the start of summer vacations.
Where to Avoid (or Go Anyway)
The Maldives are in their southwest monsoon, with more wind and showers. Prices are at their lowest, though. Hanifaru Bay's manta season in Baa Atoll is underway too, so it is a smart go-anyway choice for marine lovers with flexible plans.
Mexico's Pacific coast, Costa Rica and Belize begin their green season. Arenal's rainforest is especially lush. Ambergris Caye's lobster season opens in mid-June. Phuket and Krabi enter the monsoon; consider Koh Samui on the Gulf side instead.
Sedona is hot. Kyoto and Hakone enter the rainy season. Fairbanks has no aurora under the midnight sun, though long days suit hiking and river trips.
Festivals & Seasonal Moments
- The summer solstice, around June 21, brings the midnight sun to the Arctic, celebrated as Midsummer in Sweden and Finland.
- Iceland's National Day, June 17, brings parades and celebrations.
- The Great Migration typically moves through the western Serengeti, with Grumeti River crossings.
- The Atlantic hurricane season officially begins on June 1. San Pedro on Ambergris Caye celebrates the opening of lobster season.
- Hydrangeas begin blooming along the Hakone Tozan Railway in June.
- Synchronous fireflies in the Smokies usually continue into early June.
Booking Tips
June is one of the most competitive months for honeymoon travel, so book at least nine to twelve months ahead for small, high-demand properties like Turtle Island, Singita and Fogo Island Inn.
For a safari, ask your planner which areas the herds are likely to be in during your dates and choose lodges accordingly. In Europe, reserve restaurants and boat trips early, especially for weekends.
If you are planning a road trip in Iceland, consider a four-wheel-drive rental and leave room in your schedule for weather.
