Why Cabins Make Romantic Honeymoons
A cabin honeymoon is about texture and atmosphere: wood beams, wool blankets, the smell of a fire and the sound of rain or a nearby creek. It slows you down in a way that feels natural rather than forced. Days can be as active or lazy as you like, with hiking, fishing or horseback riding in the morning and a spa or a book in the afternoon.
Many of these places are also easy to reach from US cities, which makes them ideal for couples with limited time off, a mini-moon right after the wedding or a second celebration later in the year. And because they span every season, you can plan around fall foliage, snowy winters or long summer evenings.
American Classics: The Smokies, Sedona and the Poconos
Blackberry Farm in Walland, Tennessee, is a 4,200-acre estate in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains, part country house and part culinary pilgrimage. The Barn, its James Beard Award-winning restaurant, pours from a cellar of more than 9,000 selections. Most meals are included in traditional rates. Fly fishing, sporting clays and hiking fill the days.
L'Auberge de Sedona sits on about 11 wooded acres along Oak Creek, just below Uptown Sedona. Its cottages have fireplaces, cedar outdoor showers and private decks. Private creekside dinners for two are a signature. Astronomer-led stargazing on the grounds makes an easy, lovely late-night date.
Cove Haven Resort on Lake Wallenpaupack in the Poconos is unapologetically romantic, with heart-shaped tubs, round beds and the famous seven-foot Champagne Tower whirlpool suites. It is couples-only and all-inclusive for meals and activities (alcohol is extra). It is about two and a half hours' drive from New York City.
The Pacific Coast: Big Sur and Tofino
Ventana Big Sur, now branded Alila Ventana Big Sur, sits on 160 acres of meadow, oaks and redwoods on the mountain side of Highway 1, with long views to the Pacific. Suites with private hot tubs and fireplaces, Japanese hot baths and inclusive dining at The Sur House make it a grown-up retreat.
On Vancouver Island, the Wickaninnish Inn stands on a rocky point at Chesterman Beach near Tofino. Every room faces the ocean and has a fireplace and soaking tub. In winter the inn provides rain gear for storm watching. It is equal parts beach lodge and rainforest retreat. Many couples find storm season the most romantic time of all.
Belize: A Jungle Lodge With a Pedigree
The Blancaneaux Lodge sits in the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve in Belize's Cayo District, above the waterfall-laced Privassion Creek. Once Francis Ford Coppola's private retreat, it now has about 20 thatched cabañas, villas and cottages, including a Honeymoon Cabaña. Natural swimming holes, a creekside hot pool, horseback rides in the pine ridge and wood-fired pizza made from Coppola family recipes give it a playful, adventurous feel.
The cabañas are not air-conditioned, relying on fans and mountain air. The drive from Belize City takes a couple of hours, partly unpaved, so many couples fly in. A popular honeymoon combines Blancaneaux with a few beach nights on the coast.
Northern Lights Lodges: Lapland and Iceland
Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort in Finnish Lapland is best known for its glass igloos, but its log cabins and kelo-glass chalets suit couples who want more space. Traditional smoke saunas, husky rides and the snowy edge of Urho Kekkonen National Park make it a classic winter honeymoon.
ION Adventure Hotel in South Iceland is a modern, brutalist-style lodge in a remote lava and moss landscape near Lake Þingvallavatn. Its Northern Lights Bar has 180-degree windows, while Lava and Aurora Suites come with private saunas. It is a short drive to Þingvellir and the Silfra fissure, which makes it a great base for exploring the Golden Circle.
How to Choose and When to Go
- Food lovers should look first at Blackberry Farm, where dining is the centerpiece.
- Outdoor adventurers will love The Blancaneaux Lodge, ION Adventure Hotel and Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort.
- Couples who want pure romance and fun should consider Cove Haven Resort.
- Ocean lovers should pick Ventana Big Sur or the Wickaninnish Inn.
Timing matters. The Smokies are typically at peak fall color from about mid-October to early November. The Poconos usually peak in early to mid-October. Sedona is best in spring and fall. Tofino is busiest in summer, but winter storm season is beloved by couples. Lapland and Iceland are best for aurora from roughly September to March. Belize is driest from about December to April.
