Private Islands

One island, one resort and a beach that seems to have been saved just for you two.

30 stays
Original illustration

A private island resort removes the last traces of the outside world. There is no public beach next door, no day-trip boats unloading at noon and no road to anywhere else. The island and the resort are the same thing. The only people you see are a handful of fellow guests and the team looking after you. For a honeymoon, that kind of seclusion is hard to match.

The eight islands in this collection range from Turtle Island in Fiji, with just 14 bures, to sprawling estates like Laucala Island, with its own airstrip and golf course. Some are fully inclusive, others are priced room by room; some are barefoot and rustic-chic, others polished to a high gloss. What they share is the feeling of arriving somewhere that is, for the length of your stay, yours. Below we compare them, explain what to expect from the journey and share how to choose the right one for the way you like to travel.

Private Islands

Why a Private Island Feels Different

On most beach holidays, the hotel is one piece of a larger destination. On a private island, the resort is the destination. That changes the rhythm of a trip. Days are shaped around what you feel like rather than what is nearby. Staff can arrange things that are simply impossible elsewhere: a whole beach reserved for a picnic, a dinner table set up on a sandbank, a boat waiting whenever you want it.

Scale matters too. Several islands here have fewer than 15 villas or bures, so service becomes personal very quickly. At North Island in the Seychelles, there are no set menus; the chefs simply ask what you would like. At Cayo Espanto in Belize, they ask for your preferences before you arrive and cook around them. And because guest numbers are tiny relative to the land, it is common to go a whole afternoon without seeing anyone at all.

The Indian Ocean: Seychelles and Zanzibar

The Seychelles granite islands are some of the most beautiful anywhere, with huge sculpted boulders, jungle-covered hills and impossibly clear water. North Island has only 11 villas, each enormous and built from local stone and timber, on an island of about two square kilometers with four beaches, including the aptly named Honeymoon Cove. Its restoration of native habitat and turtle nesting are part of the story. Its royal honeymoon pedigree is well known.

Six Senses Zil Pasyon is the only resort on Félicité Island, just east of La Digue, with infinity-pool villas, spa pavilions set among granite boulders and La Digue's beaches about 15 minutes away by speedboat. It suits couples who want privacy and a bit of design-forward energy.

Off Zanzibar, &Beyond Mnemba Island is barefoot and simple in the best way: around a dozen beachfront bandas on a tiny island inside a marine conservation area where only lodge guests may land. It is a natural finale after a Tanzania safari.

The South Pacific: Tetiaroa and Fiji

The Brando occupies Marlon Brando's former atoll of Tetiaroa, about 20 minutes by private plane from Tahiti. Its 35 villas each have a pool and access to the beach, the lagoon is vast and the inclusive rate covers dining and many activities. Turtle nesting and bird-watching on Bird Island add a strong nature element.

Fiji has two very different options. Turtle Island in the Yasawa Islands is couples-focused, with only 14 bures for a maximum of 28 guests, about a dozen beaches and an all-inclusive rate that covers drinks and most activities. Each couple has a Bure Mama. The setting is the Blue Lagoon where the 1980 film was shot. Laucala Island, now operated as COMO Laucala Island, sits near Taveuni in the north and covers around 3,300 acres with just 25 residences, an 18-hole golf course and its own farm, reached by a roughly 45-minute private charter from Nadi.

The Caribbean: Belize and Turks & Caicos

For couples who want a short flight, the Caribbean delivers two very different islands. Cayo Espanto, about three miles off San Pedro on Ambergris Caye, has seven villas, six on the beach with plunge pools and one overwater bungalow. Meals and house drinks are included, a butler looks after each villa and the Belize Barrier Reef is on the doorstep.

COMO Parrot Cay in Turks & Caicos is much larger, a private island of about 1,000 acres with a long white-sand beach and mangroves, reached by boat from Providenciales. Beach houses with heated private pools sit right on the sand. The COMO Shambhala Retreat is one of the most respected spas in the region. Parrot Cay is priced room by room, with optional packages that bundle meals and activities, so it suits couples who like flexibility.

How to Choose the Right Island

Start with three questions.

  • How private do you want it? Turtle Island, North Island and Cayo Espanto are the most intimate. Laucala Island and COMO Parrot Cay have more guests but far more land, so you still rarely see anyone.
  • Inclusive or à la carte? The Brando, Turtle Island, Laucala Island, Cayo Espanto and &Beyond Mnemba Island are sold on inclusive terms, though the details differ. Six Senses Zil Pasyon and COMO Parrot Cay typically are not. North Island offers different rate types.
  • Barefoot or polished? Mnemba and Turtle Island lean toward relaxed, sandy-toes simplicity. Laucala and North Island deliver ultra-luxury at every turn.

Also check family policies. Turtle Island is couples-focused apart from a few family weeks a year, while most others welcome children, though their size keeps things calm.

Getting There and Practicalities

Reaching a private island is part of the adventure. It shapes your planning too. Helicopters fly to North Island and Six Senses Zil Pasyon from Mahé; seaplanes reach Turtle Island from Nadi; private planes serve The Brando and Laucala Island; and boats carry you to Cayo Espanto, COMO Parrot Cay and Mnemba. Small aircraft have strict luggage limits and most fly only in daylight, so pack soft bags and time your international arrival with a margin.

Minimum stays are common, often four or five nights. The busiest months sell out far in advance because inventory is so small. Read exactly what an inclusive rate covers; premium wine, motorized excursions, spa treatments and transfers are the usual exceptions. Entry and visa rules depend on your citizenship and can change at short notice, so check the official government website for each country before you book.

FAQ

Private Islands: your questions

What is the most romantic private island resort?

It depends on your style. Turtle Island in Fiji is designed around couples, with only 14 bures and private beach days. North Island in the Seychelles offers huge villas and total seclusion. Cayo Espanto in Belize has just seven villas and a much shorter flight from the US.

Are private island resorts all-inclusive?

Many are, but not all. The Brando, Turtle Island, Laucala Island, Cayo Espanto and &Beyond Mnemba Island sell inclusive stays, while COMO Parrot Cay and Six Senses Zil Pasyon usually quote room rates with optional packages. Always ask what is excluded, especially premium wine, spa treatments and transfers.

What is the closest private island to the US?

In our collection, Cayo Espanto in Belize and COMO Parrot Cay in Turks & Caicos are the easiest to reach. Belize City and Providenciales both have nonstop flights from several US cities, followed by a short connection or boat ride to the island.

How long should we stay on a private island?

Plan on at least four or five nights. Several islands set minimum stays around that length. The journey in and out takes time. A longer stay also lets you settle into the slower pace, which is really the point of choosing an island of your own.

Do private islands allow children?

Most of the islands here welcome families, but their tiny guest numbers and spread-out villas keep them peaceful. Turtle Island is the exception, as it is reserved for couples except during a few family weeks each year, so check its calendar before you book.
