The short answer

Choose Koh Lanta if you want comfortable resorts, long sunset beaches, easy access from Krabi and boat days to Koh Rok and the Emerald Cave, with Railay or Phi Phi a ferry ride away. Choose Koh Lipe if clear water and snorkeling straight from the beach matter most and you are happy with mid-range barefoot stays and a longer journey. Lanta is the more complete honeymoon island. Lipe is the more striking water.

Koh Lipe and Koh Lanta are both on Thailand's Andaman coast, both run on the same November to April season and both are calmer alternatives to Phuket and Phi Phi. They are linked by boat in high season, so couples planning a southern island hop often weigh the two.

Koh Lanta is a long, skinny island in Krabi province, roughly 20 miles from end to end. Its west coast is lined almost entirely with beaches facing the sunset. It never had an airport or a bridge, which has kept it calmer than its neighbors. The farther south you go, the quieter it gets.

Koh Lipe sits near the southern end of the coast in Satun province, about 60 kilometers offshore and within sight of Malaysia's Langkawi. You can walk across it in about 20 minutes. Around it lie the forested islands of Tarutao National Marine Park, including Koh Adang and Koh Rawi, with some of the clearest water in the country.

One is a bigger island with more comfort. The other is a small one with extraordinary water.

  • You love the idea of walking everywhere, including to dinner
  • You are fine with mid-range bungalows and boutique resorts

  • You want a polished pool villa resort on a long beach
  • Sunsets from your own terrace matter
  • You want a simpler journey from Krabi Airport
  • Divers in your pair want Hin Daeng and Hin Muang
  • You would like to combine Railay or Phi Phi easily

The Water and the Beaches

Lipe's water is the reason to go. On calm dry-season days it is so clear that longtail boats seem to float in the air. You can snorkel straight off several beaches. The reefs around Koh Adang, Koh Rawi and the smaller islets are a short boat ride away. Sunrise Beach faces Koh Adang with some of the best views on the island. Pattaya Beach has soft sand and calm water. Sunset Beach is a small, quiet cove for evening drinks.

Lanta's beaches are longer and more varied. Long Beach and Klong Dao in the north are busiest. Klong Nin and Kantiang Bay in the middle feel tucked away, with a small village and some of the best resorts. Farther south toward Bamboo Bay, coves thin out to a handful of bungalows. The snorkeling is offshore, at Koh Rok's shallow reefs and the four-island trip.

In the monsoon months, respect red flags on Lanta's west coast.

Where You Will Sleep

This is Lanta's biggest advantage. Pimalai Resort and Spa sits on about 900 meters of beach at Kantiang Bay, with pool villas up the hill and a jungle spa, from roughly $280 a night. It has been a honeymoon favorite for years. Other resorts spread along the coast instead of stacking into one strip, so you can choose between walking to dinner near Long Beach and real seclusion farther south.

Lipe's accommodation is mostly mid-range, from bungalows to boutique resorts with pools. True luxury is limited, so read recent reviews and manage expectations. Pick your beach first. Sunrise Beach is the strong choice for couples who want swimming and snorkeling close to their room. Pattaya Beach has the most restaurants and resorts. Sunset Beach is quietest.

As a rough Thailand guide, upscale pool-villa resorts often run about $300 to $700 a night in high season, with Lipe's mid-range stays well below that. All figures are approximate.

The Journey There

Both start with a connection through an Asian or Middle Eastern hub to Bangkok, since there are no nonstop flights from the US to Thailand.

For Lanta, fly to Krabi (KBV), then take a private car or van of about 2.5 hours that includes a short car ferry and a bridge. Afternoon ferry queues can add time. In the dry season, boats also run from Krabi Town, Ao Nang, Railay, Phi Phi and Phuket.

Lipe takes most of a day from Bangkok. Fly about 90 minutes to Hat Yai (HDY), drive about two hours to Pak Bara Pier, then ride a speedboat for about 90 minutes. Trang Airport (TST) is an alternative, with boats from Hat Yao Pier in high season. Boat times are fixed, so many couples spend a night in Bangkok or Hat Yai on the way out. Expect a national park fee on arrival. Boats often land on a floating platform.

In high season, boats also link Lipe with Lanta and Phi Phi.

Season Matters More on Lipe

Both follow the Andaman pattern, with dry, calm weather from about November to April and the southwest monsoon from about May to October. December to March is peak on both, with the busiest weeks at Christmas, New Year and Chinese New Year.

The difference is how each copes with the monsoon. On Lipe, the season is short and sharp. From about mid-May to October, the crossing gets rough, the water clouds over, boat schedules shrink to a single daily departure and many resorts and restaurants close. The best honeymoon window is January to April.

Lanta slows down too, with many smaller bungalows and restaurants closing and some ferry routes stopping. Larger resorts such as those on Kantiang stay open with deep discounts, so a pool-and-quiet-room honeymoon can work in low season. If snorkeling matters, aim for December to March on either island.

If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices for Thailand, since dengue occurs in the south.

Boat Days and Other Outings

From Lipe, hire a private longtail for a full day. Visit the reefs off Koh Rawi, where the park has set ropes along part of the reef, then Koh Hin Ngam with its beach of smooth black stones and the coral near Koh Adang. On another morning, take a boat to Koh Adang and climb the short, steep trail to the viewpoint above the ranger station. The view back over Lipe is the island's best photograph. Dive schools run courses for beginners.

From Lanta, book a private boat to Koh Rok, two small islands about 30 miles south with white sand and shallow reefs. The four-island trip stops at Koh Mook, where you swim through a dark sea tunnel into the Emerald Cave at low tide. Certified divers can spend a day at Hin Daeng and Hin Muang, deep pinnacles where manta rays and whale sharks are sometimes seen. On land, wander the stilt houses of Lanta Old Town and hike to the lighthouse in the national park.

Evenings and Island Life

Lipe has no real roads beyond a few lanes and a pedestrian main street. Evenings are easy. Walk to Walking Street for grilled fish from the ice display, fruit shakes and a massage, then walk home under the stars. Restaurants on Pattaya Beach set candlelit tables on the sand. The island is home to a long-established Urak Lawoi sea nomad community near Sunrise Beach, which keeps it from feeling purely like a resort.

Lanta's nightlife mostly means a fire show at a beach bar or live music after dinner. Sunset drinks on beanbags at Kantiang or Klong Nin are the ritual. Lanta Old Town, on the east coast, has restaurants on stilts over the water for a slow lunch.

Both islands have large Muslim communities, so a few family places skip alcohol and modest dress is polite away from the beach. Carry cash on both, since ATMs can run dry or sit far from the quieter beaches.

Doing Both on One Trip

Because boats connect them in high season, Lanta and Lipe slot neatly into one Andaman route. A two-week honeymoon might start with three nights on Railay, continue with four or five on Lanta and end with four on Lipe. Then fly home from Hat Yai or Trang via Bangkok, leaving a buffer night in case of rough seas.

If you only have a week, Lanta is the easier and more comfortable choice. Pick Lipe as a single stop only if water clarity is the top priority and you plan four nights or more to justify the journey. Wherever you end up, mention your honeymoon when booking, since smaller resorts often add flowers, a cake or a beach dinner offer.

FAQ

Koh Lipe vs Koh Lanta: your questions

Is Koh Lipe or Koh Lanta better for a honeymoon?

Koh Lanta suits most couples better, with polished resorts such as Pimalai, long sunset beaches and an easier trip from Krabi. Koh Lipe is the pick if crystal-clear water and snorkeling from the beach matter most, with a barefoot, walkable feel and mostly mid-range stays. Both are best from about November to April.

Can we travel between Koh Lipe and Koh Lanta by boat?

Yes, in high season. Boats link Lipe with Koh Lanta and Phi Phi during the dry months, which makes island hopping down the Andaman coast possible. Most routes stop or shrink during the monsoon, from about May to October, so check current schedules and travel in the morning when seas are usually calmer.

Which island has better snorkeling?

Lipe, for ease. You can snorkel straight off several beaches and the reefs of Tarutao National Marine Park are a short boat ride away. Lanta's best snorkeling needs a boat trip, to Koh Rok or on the four-island tour, but those days are excellent. Lanta is also the better base for certified divers.

Are there luxury resorts on Koh Lipe?

Lipe's accommodation is mostly mid-range, from bungalows to boutique resorts with pools. True luxury is limited. If a pool villa with full service matters, Lanta's Kantiang Bay, home to Pimalai Resort and Spa, is a better fit. On Lipe, choose by beach and read recent reviews carefully.

How long does it take to reach each island?

From Bangkok, Lipe takes most of a day: a flight of about 90 minutes to Hat Yai, two hours by road to Pak Bara and a speedboat of about 90 minutes. Lanta is simpler, with a flight to Krabi and a drive of about 2.5 hours including a short car ferry.
