Whitsunday Islands vs Lizard Island

Sailing, Whitehaven sand and a choice of resorts, or one resort, 24 beaches and a dinghy.

The short answer

Choose the Whitsundays if you want variety and value: sailing, Whitehaven Beach, scenic flights over Heart Reef and a range of resorts from kid-free Beach Club to qualia's pavilions, all with direct flights from Australia's big cities. Choose Lizard Island if you want the most exclusive, private reef stay in Australia: one all-inclusive resort on a national park island, a dinghy and a picnic for a beach of your own. Lizard is the bigger splurge and the bigger escape.

Both are island honeymoons on the Great Barrier Reef, both best from about May to October and both lovely for couples who want to swim, snorkel and do very little. They are very different trips.

The Whitsundays are a cluster of 74 islands off central Queensland, most of them uninhabited national park, set in sheltered turquoise water between the mainland and the outer reef. You can base yourselves on Hamilton Island, the only island with a commercial airport, choose a self-contained resort island like Hayman or stay on the mainland at Airlie Beach and explore by boat. The postcard is Whitehaven Beach, about four miles of white silica sand.

Lizard Island sits much farther north, about 240 km from Cairns and an hour away by light aircraft. It has one resort, a national park covering most of the land and two dozen beaches, many reachable only by boat. Meals and drinks are included. The resort hands you a dinghy, a picnic and a map.

Island Group or Single Island

The Whitsundays give you a whole archipelago to explore. Days might be a seaplane flight over Heart Reef and Hill Inlet, a day cruise to Whitehaven timed for low tide when the sand and water swirl in bands of blue, a pontoon day at Hardy Reef or a few nights on your own yacht, anchoring in a different bay each evening. The water inside the reef is protected from big ocean swell, so sailing and paddleboarding are easy.

Lizard Island is about privacy and simplicity. The island covers about 10 square kilometers of granite hills, grassland and mangroves ringed by fringing reef. You take the dinghy to Watson's Beach or Casuarina Beach, snorkel the Blue Lagoon, hike Cook's Look at sunrise and come back for dinner. There is little else to do, which is the point.

Couples who like options will love the Whitsundays. Couples who want to vanish will love Lizard.

Where You Would Stay

The Whitsundays offer real choice. On Hamilton Island, qualia occupies the quieter northern tip, with kid-free pavilions looking over the Whitsunday Passage and infinity-edge plunge pools in the Windward Pavilions. Beach Club Hamilton Island is a kid-free boutique hotel of 57 rooms right on Catseye Beach, with breakfast and transfers included. InterContinental Hayman Island Resort has its own island at the northern edge of the group, closest to the outer reef, with beachfront pool villas. Airlie Beach on the mainland is the budget base for sailing trips.

Lizard Island Resort is the only place to stay, apart from a research station and a basic campground. Rooms run from garden view rooms to oceanview villas with plunge pools, up to The Pavilion and The Villa. Guests must be at least 10 years old, so the mood is quiet and couple-focused. It is all-inclusive in the full sense, from gourmet meals to Champagne.

The Reef Itself

Both put you on the Great Barrier Reef, at different distances. In the Whitsundays, the outer reef is about two hours by fast boat. Pontoon trips to Hardy Reef include snorkeling, a semi-submersible and an underwater observatory. Some operators offer overnight stays on the pontoon. Heart Reef can only be seen from the air, since landing and snorkeling there are not permitted.

Lizard Island has fringing reef right off its beaches. The Blue Lagoon has giant clams, reef fish and turtles in shallow water. Outer reef boats reach the Ribbon Reefs and the Cod Hole, where giant potato cod approach divers. September to November brings black marlin season, drawing anglers from around the world.

Be realistic about coral health in both. Marine heatwaves and bleaching have damaged parts of the reef. Recovery varies by site. Ask staff or operators where conditions are best before you head out.

Getting There

The Whitsundays are easy to reach. Hamilton Island Airport (HTI) has direct flights from Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, with the Sydney flight taking around two and a half hours. Whitsunday Coast Airport (PPP) at Proserpine is about 35 minutes from Airlie Beach. Ferries link Airlie, Hamilton and several resorts, Hayman guests transfer on the resort's own boat and Hamilton guests get around by golf buggy.

Lizard Island takes more effort. Fly to Cairns (CNS), usually via Sydney or Brisbane from the US, then take the resort's light aircraft to Lizard Island Airport (LZR), about an hour. The low-level flight over the reef is a highlight in itself. Luggage limits on the small planes are strict, so pack soft bags.

Flights to Lizard run in daylight and can be affected by weather, so plan a night in Cairns or Port Douglas on either side. From the US, both are reached by connecting through Sydney or Brisbane.

Best Months and Stinger Season

The two share a tropical calendar. The best months run roughly from May to October or November. Days are sunny and in the mid-70s to low 80s, humidity is low and water clarity is good. In the Whitsundays, August to October is often the calmest stretch. Humpback whales pass from about July to September. On Lizard Island, September to November is especially popular as winds ease and the water warms.

December to April is the wet season in both, hot and humid with heavy downpours and a cyclone risk mostly from January to March. Check Lizard Island Resort's operating calendar, since it may close for part of the year.

Marine stingers, including box jellyfish and irukandji, are present from about November to May in both places. Wear a full-body lycra stinger suit every time you swim in that period, even close to shore. Pack reef-safe sunscreen and a hat, since the sun is intense at this latitude.

What It Costs

This is the clearest difference. In the Whitsundays, our listings start from around $590 a night at Beach Club Hamilton Island, about $650 at InterContinental Hayman Island and around $1,200 at qualia. Tours, scenic flights and meals are extra, though Beach Club includes breakfast and transfers. Airlie Beach and sailing charters bring the cost down further.

Lizard Island Resort starts around $3,050 a night for two in our listings, among the highest rates in Australia. That price includes meals, most drinks, a restocked minibar, dinghies, kayaks, paddleboards and snorkel gear. Diving, fishing charters and spa treatments at Essentia Day Spa cost extra, as do the light aircraft flights.

All figures are approximate and in US dollars. For the cost of three nights on Lizard, you could spend a week at qualia. Many couples treat Lizard as a short, once-in-a-lifetime finale.

Doing Both, or Pairing Each

You can combine them, though it takes some routing. The Whitsundays and Cairns are linked by domestic flights, usually via Brisbane, so a two-week reef honeymoon could start with four nights at qualia or Hayman, then fly to Cairns for three nights on Lizard Island and finish with two in Port Douglas.

More often, each pairs with something else. The Whitsundays fit neatly after a few nights in Sydney, with a direct flight to Hamilton Island. Lizard pairs naturally with Port Douglas and the Daintree rainforest, since both are reached from Cairns. Adding Uluru before either gives you the red desert and the reef in one trip.

For most couples, three or four nights on Lizard is plenty, while the Whitsundays reward four to six nights, especially if you add a crewed yacht charter. Book scenic flights and outer reef trips early in your stay so a weather cancellation can be rebooked.
