If you want one hotel in Athens that feels like an occasion, the Hotel Grande Bretagne is it. It has stood on Syntagma Square since the 19th century, facing the Parliament building and the Evzones in their pom-pom shoes and it still carries itself like the city's drawing room. Marble, chandeliers, a doorman who calls you by name on day two: this is classic grand hotel romance rather than a design hotel.

The reason honeymooners book it is the view. The GB Roof Garden Restaurant and Bar looks straight across the rooftops to the Acropolis and the Parthenon glows gold once the floodlights come on. Ask for a room with that same outlook and you can watch it from bed.

The hotel has 320 rooms and suites, three restaurants, four bars and the GB Spa with a thermal suite. It is part of Marriott's Luxury Collection, so points collectors can use it too. It suits couples who want to walk to the ancient sites, eat well and come home to real polish. It is less suited to anyone who wants a pool day by the sea; pair it with a few nights on the Athens Riviera or an island for that.

Why Couples Love the Grande Bretagne

Location does most of the work. From the front door you can walk to Plaka in five minutes, reach the Acropolis entrance in about twenty and stroll the National Garden right behind Parliament. That makes early starts at the ancient sites easy, which matters in summer when the heat builds by late morning.

Then there is the sense of history in the building itself. Writers, royals and heads of state have stayed here and the lobby still has the hush of a place that expects to be photographed. Service is formal but warm and the concierge team is very good at booking dinner tables that are otherwise hard to get.

Couples also like the contrast. You spend the day in dust and crowds among 2,500-year-old columns, then come back to cool marble, a cocktail at Alexander's Bar and a quiet room high above the traffic.

Rooms and Suites to Book

Room location matters more than room category here. Syntagma Square is busy around the clock, so the best honeymoon rooms are on higher floors with an Acropolis view. These cost more than city or courtyard rooms but turn the room itself into a sight.

If budget allows, an Acropolis-view suite adds a separate sitting area and sometimes a balcony, which is lovely for breakfast in spring and fall. Lower-floor rooms facing the square are elegant but can pick up noise from demonstrations, traffic and late-night scooters. Courtyard-facing rooms are quiet but have no view.

When you book, mention that it is your honeymoon and ask directly for a high floor facing the Acropolis. Bookings made through the Luxury Collection sometimes allow upgrades for elite members. Interiors are traditional, with antiques and heavy fabrics, so expect old-world comfort rather than minimalist design.

The Roof Garden, Bars and GB Spa

The GB Roof Garden Restaurant and Bar is the hotel's star. Book a table at the edge of the terrace for sunset and stay through the moment the Acropolis lights come on. The menu leans Mediterranean and the wine list has a good Greek section worth exploring with the sommelier. Even if you dine elsewhere most nights, come up for a drink.

Downstairs, the Winter Garden serves breakfast and afternoon tea under a glass roof and Alexander's Bar is a clubby, wood-paneled room for a nightcap. Both partners can find something here: one evening of white-tablecloth formality, another of a cocktail and an early night.

The GB Spa has treatment rooms and a thermal suite that is a real relief after a hot day on marble. Book a couples treatment for your arrival afternoon to shake off the flight.

Things to Do from the Hotel

Walk to the Acropolis at opening time and then cool off in the Acropolis Museum, where the glass floor shows excavations below. The National Garden behind Parliament is a shady place to recover. Watch the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, right across the square.

In the evening, wander up through Plaka and Anafiotika, the whitewashed lanes under the Acropolis rock, then eat in Koukaki or Psyrri where locals go. Climb or take the funicular up Lycabettus Hill for sunset over the whole city.

For a day out, the concierge can arrange a drive to the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion, about an hour and a half down the coast, timed for sunset. Ferries to the islands leave from Piraeus, around 30 minutes away, so the hotel works well as the start or finish of an island honeymoon.

Getting There

Athens International Airport (ATH) is about 35–50 minutes by car, depending on traffic. The hotel can arrange a private transfer, or you can take a licensed taxi from the rank; airport taxis to central Athens charge a set daytime fare that rises after midnight. The metro's blue line runs from the airport to Syntagma station, which has an exit on the square, a handy option if you travel light.

Piraeus port is around 30 minutes by taxi, which helps if you are heading to the Cyclades the next morning. Book an early transfer, since ferry check-in can be crowded in summer.

Around the city, most sights are walkable. Taxis are inexpensive and easy to hail through apps. Wear shoes with grip for the Acropolis; the marble is slippery and polished smooth by centuries of feet.

Is It Worth It?

For a first trip to Athens, yes, if you book the right room. The Grande Bretagne gives you a central location, historic glamour and the best-known rooftop view in the city. Paying extra for an Acropolis-view room is what makes it a honeymoon stay rather than simply a fine hotel.

It is not a quiet retreat. The square is lively and sometimes hosts protests and the style is traditional rather than contemporary. Couples who want design, a big pool or sea views should look at the Athens Riviera, where the Four Seasons Astir Palace sits on its own peninsula. Couples on a tighter budget can get a similar view from boutique hotels in Makrygianni and Koukaki for less.

Two or three nights is the sweet spot before moving on to the islands. Rates vary widely by season and are highest from late spring through early fall.

Good to Know

Summer in Athens is hot, often well above 90°F in July and August, so plan sightseeing early and late with a rest in the middle of the day. Spring and fall are more comfortable and better value.

The Roof Garden fills up on summer evenings, so book your table when you book your room. Smart casual dress works for dinner for both of you; at sites such as monasteries, cover shoulders and knees.

Pickpockets work the metro and the crowds around Monastiraki, so keep phones zipped away. At night central Athens is generally lively and busy and taxis are easy to find outside the hotel. Bring your passport for check-in.

Insider tips

  1. Request a high-floor Acropolis-view room; lower rooms on the square hear more traffic.
  2. Reserve a terrace-edge table at the Roof Garden for sunset when you book the room.
  3. Use the Syntagma metro exit on the square to reach the airport cheaply if you pack light.
  4. Visit the Acropolis right at opening, then retreat to the thermal suite before lunch.

FAQ

Hotel Grande Bretagne, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Athens questions, answered

Do rooms at the Hotel Grande Bretagne have Acropolis views?

Some do. Rooms and suites on higher floors facing southwest look toward the Acropolis, while others face Syntagma Square, the city or an inner courtyard. Acropolis-view categories cost more and sell out first. Book that category directly rather than hoping for an upgrade and mention your honeymoon when you reserve.

Can non-guests eat at the GB Roof Garden?

Yes, the GB Roof Garden Restaurant and Bar is open to outside guests, which is why it gets busy on summer evenings. Hotel guests still need a reservation for the best tables. If dinner is fully booked, try for a drink at the bar earlier in the evening for the same view.

How far is the hotel from the Acropolis?

The Acropolis entrance is roughly a 20-minute walk through Plaka, mostly on pedestrian streets with a climb at the end. A taxi takes a few minutes. The Acropolis Museum is also an easy walk. Go early in the morning to avoid both the heat and the tour groups.

Does the Hotel Grande Bretagne have a pool?

The hotel is best known for its rooftop restaurant and the GB Spa with a thermal suite rather than for resort-style swimming. Check current pool facilities with the hotel if a swim is important to you. Couples who want long beach or pool days usually add a few nights on the Athens Riviera or an island.

How many nights should we spend in Athens?

Two or three nights suits most honeymoon itineraries. That gives you time for the Acropolis and its museum, a sunset on Lycabettus Hill, a good food night in Koukaki or Psyrri and maybe a trip to Cape Sounion. After that, most couples take a ferry or a short flight to the islands.
