Grand Hotel Fasano is the classic choice for a romantic stay on Lake Garda: a grand old hotel right on the water at Gardone Riviera, on the gentle western shore. It was built in 1888 as a hunting lodge for the Austrian imperial family, expanded in 1903 to meet demand from northern European visitors and restored as a five-star grand hotel after the Second World War. Gabriele D'Annunzio, Paul Heyse and Gustav Klimt are among its past guests.

Today it offers lake-view rooms and suites, a spa with indoor and outdoor pools, a pier for lake swims and boat pickups and a restaurant, Il Fagiano, that holds a Michelin star. Breakfast is included in every rate. The hotel is a recognized National Heritage Site of Italy.

It suits couples who love old-world hotels, lake views from the bed and long dinners on a terrace. It is a little more relaxed and less formal than the big palace hotels of Lake Como. It is less ideal for couples who want ultra-modern design or a remote hilltop retreat. Its entry rooms are small. Pay for a lake view and you will not regret it.

Why Couples Love Grand Hotel Fasano

The water is right there. Rooms in the main residence look over the lake toward the mountains of the eastern shore, terraces sit just above the shoreline and a historic pier lets you step down into the lake on a hot afternoon. The garden, with its old magnolias and shaded corners, is lovely for an evening walk.

Gardone Riviera is one of the most graceful towns on Garda. It has a long lakeside promenade, a mild climate that once drew winter visitors from across Europe and two of the lake's best sights within walking distance: D'Annunzio's eccentric estate, the Vittoriale degli Italiani. The Heller botanical garden. You can walk to dinner, take a ferry to another village or simply stay put.

Couples often say the hotel feels lived in and warm rather than stiff, with friendly staff and plenty of returning guests.

Rooms and Suites to Book

Room choice here makes a big difference, because the cheapest rooms are compact and miss the main view.

  • Suites with Lake View, about 90 square meters, are the showpieces of the central residence.
  • Executive rooms with Lake View, about 40 to 45 square meters, are the best value for a honeymoon, with space to spread out and the lake in front of you.
  • Deluxe rooms with Lake View, about 30 to 35 square meters, are a good middle choice.
  • Superior rooms, about 20 to 25 square meters, come with full or partial lake views.
  • Standard rooms are in Villa Principe or the main building and have partial or no lake view. The no-view rooms have no balcony.

For a honeymoon, book an Executive or Deluxe room with lake view in the main residence. Ask for a high floor and mention your celebration when booking, since the best views are on the upper levels.

Food, Drink and the Aqva Spa

The hotel has an unusually strong dining lineup for its size. Il Fagiano, led by chef Maurizio Bufi, earned a Michelin star in 2024 for refined Italian cooking rooted in traditional flavors. Book it for one special night. Note the dress code asks men to avoid open-toed shoes.

Magnolia Restaurant sits beneath magnolia trees said to be around 200 years old. Osteria Il Pescatore has a terrace by the lake and a more relaxed Mediterranean menu, lovely in moonlight. Bistrò 1888 is a bright, casual space in the garden. Ramas Lounge Bar mixes serious cocktails and La Terrazza serves drinks and light snacks over the lake.

The Aqva Spa has an indoor pool and an outdoor pool joined by a covered tunnel, a sauna, a Turkish bath and hydromassage, with treatments using the Parisian brand Sothys. Saunas and steam rooms are kid-free, so they stay quiet.

Things to Do Around Gardone Riviera

Start with the Vittoriale degli Italiani, the hillside home that poet and war hero Gabriele D'Annunzio filled with relics, art and a warship's prow set into the garden. It is eccentric and fascinating. The André Heller botanical garden nearby has tropical plants and modern sculpture.

Ferries and hydrofoils stop at Gardone, so you can hop to Salò for its lakeside promenade, to Sirmione for the moated castle and thermal baths or across to Malcesine for the cable car up Monte Baldo. Limone sul Garda, with its old lemon houses, makes a pretty half day farther north.

Inland, the Valtenesi hills have wineries producing Chiaretto rosé and Groppello reds. Cyclists and hikers will find good trails in the Alto Garda Bresciano park behind Gargnano. Verona, with its Roman arena and summer opera season, is a day trip or a memorable evening.

Getting There and When to Go

Verona Villafranca (VRN) is usually the closest airport, roughly 1 hour 15 minutes by car. Milan Bergamo (BGY) is about the same distance. Milan Malpensa and Venice are each roughly two hours or a little more. Many couples fly into Milan or Venice from the US, then drive or take a private transfer. The hotel's concierge can arrange cars from airports and train stations. Parking on site is free.

High-speed trains stop at Desenzano del Garda, about 30 to 40 minutes away by road.

May, June and September are the sweet spot, with warm days, swimmable water from June and fewer crowds than July and August. Late April is lovely for gardens. Many lakeside hotels, ferries and restaurants reduce services or close in the colder months, so check the hotel's seasonal dates and ferry timetables if you plan to travel between November and March.

Is It Worth It?

For a lake-view room, yes. Lake-view rooms with breakfast typically start somewhere around $450 to $650 a night outside peak weeks and rise in July, August and for suites, so treat those figures as an approximate guide. For a lakefront heritage hotel with a Michelin-starred restaurant and a full spa, that is fair value by Italian lakes standards. It is also well below the top hotels of Lake Como.

Know the trade-offs. The cheapest rooms are small and lack a full view. The hotel welcomes families, so summer weeks bring children to the pools. The style is traditional rather than contemporary.

Couples who want a contemporary wellness retreat with a huge spa should look at the hill resorts above Gargnano. Couples who want a handful of rooms and total exclusivity will prefer one of the lake's small historic villas, at much higher prices. Fasano is for couples who want the lake, a balcony and dinner on the water.

Insider tips

  1. Book an Executive or Deluxe room with lake view; the cheapest rooms are compact and miss the main view.
  2. Reserve Il Fagiano well ahead for your special night and pack closed shoes for the dress code.
  3. Use the ferry stop in Gardone for a day trip to Sirmione rather than fighting summer traffic by car.
  4. Visit the Vittoriale in the morning before the tour groups arrive.
