At a glance

Three nights near the Arenal volcano and three on the Papagayo Peninsula in Guanacaste, flying in and out of Liberia (LIR). It suits couples who want rainforest, hot springs and wildlife with a beach finish, all with one transfer. Late December to April is driest, while May and November bring green hills and lower rates.

Arenal and Guanacaste are the easiest way to fit Costa Rica's jungle and beach into a 7-day honeymoon. You fly into Guanacaste Airport (LIR) in Liberia, which has nonstop flights from a number of US hubs. You drive about three hours to Arenal, then about three hours back to the coast. There are no internal flights and no backtracking to San José.

The first three nights are at Arenal, where a cone-shaped volcano rises above rainforest and the ground heats rivers into thermal pools. The best honeymoon lodges here give you a private hot spring plunge pool with a view of the peak. Days go to hanging bridges through the canopy, a waterfall swim and a night walk to find red-eyed tree frogs.

Then you move west to the Papagayo Peninsula in Guanacaste, a protected stretch of dry forest and small beaches on the Pacific with only a few resorts. That is where the slow days and the splurge go. Late December to April is driest. May and November are greener and cheaper.

Day by day

Days 1–3: Arenal

Land at LIR and meet your private transfer. The drive to La Fortuna takes about three hours, past cattle ranches and then into greener hills. Arrive by late afternoon, sink into your plunge pool and watch the volcano appear and disappear in the clouds. Avoid driving yourselves after dark.

On day two, start early with the Arenal hanging bridges, a network of suspension bridges that puts you at eye level with the canopy. Look for toucans, monkeys and the odd sloth. After lunch in town, take the forest staircase down to La Fortuna Waterfall and swim in the cool pool at its base. In the evening, soak at one of the thermal resorts around the volcano, such as Tabacón, where warm rivers run through pools and small waterfalls.

Day three can go two ways. Adventurous couples can zip-line side by side over the valleys or hike the old lava fields in Arenal Volcano National Park. Couples who want rest can book a spa morning. After dark, join a guided night walk to find frogs and sleeping birds by flashlight.

Day 4: Río Celeste and the Drive West

Leave Arenal after breakfast for the drive to the Papagayo Peninsula, about three hours without stops. If you start early, add a detour to Tenorio Volcano National Park to hike to Río Celeste, a river colored a pale, milky blue by minerals in the water. The trail to the waterfall is about two hours round trip, muddy after rain and steep in sections. It adds roughly half a day.

Your driver can wait while you hike. Pack swimsuits and a change of clothes, though swimming is not allowed in the river within the park.

Arrive at your Papagayo resort in the late afternoon. The landscape changes completely on the way, from rainforest to dry forest and golden hills in the dry season. Check in, take a swim and have a quiet dinner looking at the Pacific.

Days 5–7: The Papagayo Coast

Day five is for the sea. Join a sunset catamaran along the Papagayo coast, with stops for snorkeling in secluded coves and a drink on deck as the sun drops into the Pacific. Spend the morning before it on the beach or walking the resort trails at dawn, when howler monkeys, capuchins and coatis are most active.

Make day six your splurge. Book a couples massage with an ocean view, then dinner at your resort's best table. Active couples can swap the morning for a dive or snorkel trip to the Catalina Islands, known for rays and turtles, or a horseback ride on the beach at golden hour.

On day seven, have a slow breakfast and a last swim. The airport is about 30 to 60 minutes from the peninsula's resorts. Arrive about three hours before an international flight.

Getting Between Stops

Fly into Guanacaste Airport (LIR) in Liberia. It has nonstop flights from a number of US hubs, often around three hours from Houston or Miami and about five to six from New York. Juan Santamaría (SJO) near San José has more flights, but it is farther from the beach half of this route.

Private transfers and shared shuttles connect LIR, Arenal and Guanacaste every day. Each leg takes about three hours. A private driver is the easiest choice on a honeymoon, since mountain roads are winding and signage can be thin.

If you rent a car, choose a 4x4 or high-clearance SUV, especially in the rainy months. Avoid driving after dark. Once you are settled, most lodges and tour operators offer pickups. At Papagayo, resorts are about 30 to 60 minutes from LIR.

Where to Stay

At Arenal, the best honeymoon stays cluster in the hills just west of La Fortuna. Nayara Springs is the kid-free choice, with villas hidden in gardens, each with its own mineral spring plunge pool, plus in-villa breakfast and spa pavilions over the rainforest. Nayara Tented Camp, next door, has safari-style tents on stilts with private hot spring pools and a reforested sloth sanctuary. It welcomes families but feels intimate. Whatever you choose, prioritize a private warm pool and a volcano-facing room.

In Guanacaste, the Papagayo Peninsula is the luxury enclave. Four Seasons Resort Costa Rica at Peninsula Papagayo sits on an isthmus between two beaches, with a kid-free pool, Canopy Suites with plunge pools, a golf course and a superb spa. Surf towns farther south, such as Tamarindo, have boutique hotels at friendlier prices.

When to Go

Late December to April is the driest stretch for both stops and the most popular time to go. Arenal's trails are firmer, waterfall pools are clearer and the volcano shows itself more often. Guanacaste has near-constant sunshine and breezy days. Book well ahead for the holidays and spring break.

May and November are excellent shoulder months. Mornings are often sunny, rates drop and the hills in Guanacaste turn green. From June to October, the green season brings regular afternoon rain, especially at Arenal, which sits on the wetter Caribbean side of the mountains. September and October are usually the wettest months.

Rain is part of Arenal in any month. A warm private pool turns a downpour into something romantic, so plan active outings for the morning and keep afternoons for soaking.

Budget and Booking

Costa Rica's honeymoon lodges are not cheap, though they include a lot. As an approximate guide, Nayara Springs and Nayara Tented Camp often run well over $1,000 a night for two in high season. Four Seasons Papagayo is in a similar range. Good boutique hotels in La Fortuna and Tamarindo cost far less.

Book the Arenal lodge first, since the best rooms sell out, then the Papagayo resort, then your transfers. Reserve the hanging bridges, the night walk and the catamaran a few days ahead in high season.

Costa Rica uses the colón, but US dollars are widely accepted. Many hotel bills already include tax and a service charge. Tip guides and drivers separately. Mention your honeymoon. Many lodges add a turndown surprise or a dessert.

Staying Comfortable and Safe

Pack light rain jackets, quick-dry clothes and closed shoes with grip for the waterfall stairs and muddy trails. Bring a warm layer for Arenal evenings, which can be cool after rain.

Do not hike off-trail on the volcano. The national park marks safe routes across the old lava fields. On night walks, follow your guide and do not touch wildlife.

On the Pacific coast, some beaches have strong currents and rip currents. Swim near your resort, where conditions are usually calmer. Ask staff about the day's sea. Use reef-safe sunscreen and drink plenty of water in Guanacaste's dry heat.

Mosquitoes can carry dengue in Costa Rica, especially in the rainy season. Use repellent at dawn and dusk. If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices before you book.

Make It Shorter or Longer

For a five-day trip, spend two nights at Arenal and two at Papagayo. Keep the hanging bridges, the hot springs and the catamaran, then skip the Río Celeste detour.

For nine or ten days, add two nights in Monteverde between Arenal and the coast for its cloud forest and wildlife, or stay longer at the beach. Another option is three nights in Manuel Antonio, flying from Liberia via San José, for rainforest that runs right down to the sand.

Couples who care most about rest can rebalance the same seven days to two nights at Arenal and four on the Papagayo coast. You keep a full day in the rainforest and one soak in the hot springs, then gain two slow beach days.

FAQ

Planning this trip

How far is Arenal from Guanacaste?

About three hours by road from Arenal to the Papagayo Peninsula and about three hours from Liberia's airport to Arenal. Private transfers and shared shuttles run daily. If you rent a car, choose a 4x4 or high-clearance SUV and avoid driving after dark.

Which airport should we fly into?

Fly into Guanacaste Airport (LIR) in Liberia. It is closest to both stops on this route, with the beach about 30 to 60 minutes away and Arenal about three hours. San José (SJO) has more flights but adds driving time to the beach half.

Is Arenal worth it on a short trip?

Yes. Three nights give you hanging bridges, a waterfall swim, a night walk and evenings in a private hot spring pool with a volcano view. It is the jungle half of Costa Rica in one place. It also pairs well with a Pacific beach.

Will it rain on our honeymoon?

At Arenal, probably at some point, since it is green for a reason. Showers usually come in the afternoon, especially from June to October. Guanacaste is much drier, with near-constant sun from December to April. Plan active outings for the morning and soak when it rains.

What is the splurge on this route?

The Arenal lodge with a private hot spring pool, such as Nayara Springs, plus a Papagayo resort like the Four Seasons. If you need to save, pick a simpler beach hotel near Tamarindo and keep the money for the volcano view.
