The short answer

Riga suits couples who love walkable old cities and want Northern Europe for less than Scandinavia. The medieval Old Town and some of Europe's finest Art Nouveau streets fill three or four nights, with Jūrmala's sandy beaches 30 minutes away by train. June through August brings long evenings on terraces and rooftop bars; midsummer on June 23–24 empties the city. Hotels, restaurants and spas cost noticeably less than in Copenhagen or Stockholm. Don't miss sunset cocktails at the Skyline Bar.

Best for
  • Architecture and city-walk lovers
  • A Baltic or Nordic route stop
  • Honeymooners watching the budget
Maybe skip it if
  • You want warm, tropical swimming
  • Your only dates fall in winter

Riga is the biggest city in the Baltics, but its core is small enough to cover on foot in an afternoon. The medieval Old Town is a maze of cobbled lanes, church spires and gabled merchant houses, crowned by the ornate House of the Blackheads. Cross the canal park and the mood shifts to wide boulevards lined with Art Nouveau buildings, their facades crowded with stone faces, peacocks, sphinxes and twisting vines.

Together, the Old Town and the historic center are listed by UNESCO. The Art Nouveau architecture is among the finest anywhere in Europe. That alone makes Riga worth a visit for couples who love cities.

But the real pleasure in summer is how close nature sits. Electric trains reach the white sand beaches of Jūrmala in about half an hour. Pine forests and the Gauja valley are an hour away. Back in the city, long June evenings stretch on terraces and rooftop bars until the sky finally fades around midnight. Spend three or four nights here as the heart of a Baltic or Nordic honeymoon.

Why Honeymoon in Riga

Riga combines the atmosphere of a medieval trading port with the swagger of a turn-of-the-century boomtown. Around 1900 the city was growing fast and its architects embraced Art Nouveau with enthusiasm. Streets like Alberta iela and Elizabetes iela read like an open-air gallery.

It is a very romantic city to walk. The canal that curls through Bastejkalns park has small bridges and boats. The Old Town squares glow under lamplight. The view from St. Peter's tower takes in red roofs, the Daugava river and the long sweep of the riverfront.

Couples also find Riga easy on the wallet compared with Copenhagen or Stockholm. Elegant hotels, creative restaurants and spa treatments all come at noticeably lower prices. Add a beach day in Jūrmala, an evening at the National Opera and late cocktails in a rooftop bar and you have a varied honeymoon stop without long transfers.

When to Go

June, July and August are the best months. Average summer highs sit in the upper 60s to low 70s Fahrenheit, with occasional heat waves. Days are extraordinarily long around the solstice, so you can sightsee until late evening.

Midsummer, on June 23–24, is Latvia's biggest holiday. Riga empties as locals head to the countryside. Some shops and restaurants close. Couples who want to experience Jāņi traditions should plan a night outside the city.

May and September are pleasant shoulder months, with cooler air, fewer tour groups and lower hotel prices. Autumn color in the parks can be lovely in late September.

Winter is dark and cold. However, December brings a Christmas market on Dome Square and the Old Town looks pretty under snow, which suits a short festive break. January through April is the quietest stretch and the hardest to recommend for a honeymoon.

Where to Stay

The Old Town puts you among the sights, though the busiest streets can be noisy on summer weekends. The Quiet Center, the Art Nouveau district northeast of the canal, offers grand buildings, leafy streets and better restaurants within a short walk of the Old Town.

Hotel Bergs, set in the Berga Bazārs courtyard complex, is a long-standing favorite for couples who want a design-led boutique stay. Hotel Neiburgs, in a restored Art Nouveau building in the Old Town, is a classic choice with handsome rooms and a short walk to everything.

If you prefer an apartment, look for one in a restored Art Nouveau building with high ceilings and original details. Ask about elevators, since many older buildings have steep stairs.

For a beach chapter, consider adding two nights at a spa hotel in Jūrmala rather than day-tripping. The Majori area has the most choice.

Romantic Things to Do

Start with an Art Nouveau walk along Alberta iela and Elizabetes iela, looking up at the facades. The Riga Art Nouveau Museum, in an apartment on Alberta iela, shows how a wealthy family lived inside one of these buildings.

Take the lift up the tower of St. Peter's Church for the best panorama of the Old Town and the river.

Wander the Central Market, housed in five enormous former zeppelin hangars. Assemble a picnic of smoked fish, rye bread, cheese and berries. Carry it to the canal park or the riverbank.

Book a canal boat ride that loops through the city center and onto the Daugava at golden hour.

Spend a day in Jūrmala walking barefoot along the long sandy beach, browsing wooden villas and booking a spa treatment.

End an evening with a cocktail at the Skyline Bar on the 26th floor of the Radisson Blu Hotel Latvija, timed for sunset.

Getting There and Around

Riga International Airport is about 6 miles southwest of the center. Bus 22 runs to the city in about 30 to 40 minutes. Taxis or ride-hailing apps take around 20 to 30 minutes. There are no regular nonstop flights from the US; most couples connect through Helsinki, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Frankfurt, Amsterdam or Warsaw.

The Old Town and the Art Nouveau district are compact and best explored on foot. Cobblestones are uneven, so pack comfortable shoes. Trams, trolleybuses and buses cover the rest of the city. Tickets can be bought by app or at kiosks.

Electric trains run frequently from Riga's central station to Jūrmala, taking about 30 minutes to the Majori stop. Trains also reach Sigulda in the Gauja valley in a little over an hour.

Express buses link Riga with Tallinn and Vilnius in roughly four to five hours, which makes it a natural middle stop on a Baltic route.

Food and Drink

Latvian food is hearty and rooted in the seasons: dark rye bread, smoked fish, grey peas with bacon, potato pancakes and plenty of dill. In summer, markets overflow with strawberries, blueberries, chanterelles and young potatoes.

For a casual taste of home cooking, Lido's buffet-style restaurants serve traditional dishes cheaply. For a special dinner, Riga's top restaurants turn local produce into creative tasting menus. Book a week or more ahead for a weekend table and ask for a window seat.

Riga Black Balsam is the national herbal liqueur, thick and bitter. Try it mixed with blackcurrant juice or in coffee rather than neat. Latvian craft beer is excellent. Wine bars around the Quiet Center pour good European bottles.

Rye bread desserts, layered with whipped cream and berries, make an unexpectedly delicious ending to a meal.

Honeymoon Tips

Ignore friendly strangers inviting you to a bar. Drink-price scams aimed at tourists have been reported in Riga for years, sometimes with very large bills. Choose bars yourselves and check prices first.

Watch bags and phones in the Old Town and around the central station and market, especially in summer.

Plan your midsummer carefully. If your dates include June 23–24, book a rural guesthouse to enjoy Jāņi properly, or expect a quieter city with some closures.

Pack layers. Even in July, evenings by the sea can be cool. Showers blow through quickly.

Reserve popular restaurants and rooftop bars on Friday and Saturday nights in summer.

If you are celebrating, the National Opera's summer and autumn programs are worth checking. An evening at the opera in Riga costs a fraction of what it would at home.

FAQ

Riga honeymoon FAQ

How many days should we spend in Riga?

Three nights covers the Old Town, the Art Nouveau district, the Central Market and a beach day in Jūrmala. Four lets you add a day trip to Sigulda and the Gauja valley or Rundāle Palace. Many couples spend three nights in Riga within a ten-day Baltic or Nordic itinerary.

Is Riga romantic?

Yes, especially in summer. The Old Town has candlelit restaurants, lamp-lit squares and church spires, while the Art Nouveau district is beautiful for long walks. Canal boat rides, rooftop bars and the opera add evening options. Easy beach and forest trips break up the city time.

Can we swim at Jūrmala?

Yes, in summer. The Gulf of Riga is shallow and calm, so the water warms up more than the open Baltic, often reaching comfortable swimming temperatures in July and August. Expect it to feel bracing compared with American beaches. Lifeguarded sections operate in peak season.

Is Riga expensive?

Riga is moderately priced for Northern Europe. Hotels, restaurants and spa treatments typically cost less than in Scandinavia or Western Europe, though top hotels and fine dining are not cheap. Public transport and casual meals are very affordable. Prices rise during midsummer and summer weekends.

What should we avoid in Riga?

Avoid bars and clubs that strangers on the street recommend, as these are linked to drink-price scams. Keep an eye on belongings in crowded areas like the Old Town and Central Market. Check menu prices before ordering at tourist-facing places. Otherwise, the city is calm and pleasant to explore.
