LUX* Le Morne

LUX* Le Morne is the relaxed, sociable choice among the resorts on the Le Morne Peninsula: a five-star hotel of about 149 rooms set along the lagoon, with the dark basalt block of Le Morne Brabant rising right behind it. Because it faces west, almost every evening ends with the sun dropping into the Indian Ocean in front of you.

It suits couples who want a beach resort with personality rather than formality. The brand is known for playful touches: a wooden treehouse by the sea for breakfast or a private movie night, coffee and Negronis at Maison LUX* and a pre-order Tropical Bar instead of a standard minibar. There are five pools, two of them heated, along with the LUX* ME Spa and four restaurants including KAWAII for Japanese food.

The resort welcomes families through its Little Guest program, so it is not a hushed retreat. It is lively in a pleasant way. The grounds are big enough to find quiet corners. Rates are approximate and vary a lot by season, but LUX* Le Morne usually costs less than its neighbor The St. Regis Le Morne Resort.

Highlights at a glance

  • West-facing beach with sunsets over the lagoon
  • Le Morne Brabant, a UNESCO site, rising behind the resort
  • Seaside treehouse for breakfasts and private movie nights
  • Five pools, two of them heated
  • LUX* ME Spa and four restaurants

Why Couples Love LUX* Le Morne

The setting is the headline. Le Morne Brabant, a 556 meter mountain listed by UNESCO for its history as a refuge for people who escaped slavery, looms over the pools and beach. The lagoon in front is wide, shallow and a pale jade color, with the reef far out.

LUX* takes that drama and adds an easygoing mood. Staff are friendly rather than stiff, the dress code is relaxed and the resort runs small surprises through the day. The west-facing position is a real advantage for a honeymoon: sunsets happen over the water rather than behind a hill, so a drink on the beach at golden hour becomes a daily ritual. The kitesurfing lagoon at Le Morne is one of the best in the Indian Ocean, which gives active couples something to try together.

Rooms and Suites to Book

Rooms are spread through low buildings along the beach, with light, breezy interiors and furnished outdoor space. Views range from gardens to the lagoon. Some rooms sit right on the beach. Suites add more space and, in some cases, a whirlpool tub.

For a honeymoon, pay for a beachfront or lagoon-facing room. The whole point of this coast is the sunset over the sea. A terrace that faces it turns every evening into an event. If you are sensitive to noise, ask for a room away from the main pool and restaurant area, where families tend to gather.

Suites are worth the jump on a longer stay, mainly for the extra living space and bathroom. Mention your honeymoon when you book so the team can steer you to a quieter wing.

Food, Drink and the Spa

The resort runs four restaurants. KAWAII serves Japanese food, EAST covers Asian flavors, The Kitchen handles the buffet and The Beach is the casual spot on the sand. Maison LUX* is the café by day and a Negroni bar at aperitivo hour. The pre-order Tropical Bar delivers drinks, snacks and sunscreen to your room.

The treehouse is the romantic set piece. You can book breakfast up in the branches by the sea or a private Cinema Paradiso movie night for two. For a big gesture, the 500 Candles Dinner is a private, candlelit evening priced from about €1,100 per couple.

The LUX* ME Spa offers massages and wellness treatments, with an open-air feel. An all-inclusive plan is available, but KAWAII and EAST are excluded from it, with a partial credit instead. Factor that in when you compare plans.

Things to Do

The peninsula is a playground for both partners.

  • Hike Le Morne Brabant at sunrise with a local guide. The final section is a steep scramble.
  • Take kitesurfing lessons on the shallow lagoon, one of the island's best spots for beginners.
  • Book a helicopter flight for the view of the famous underwater waterfall illusion off the peninsula.
  • Go dolphin watching early in the morning, or whale watching in season, with the resort's boat partners.
  • Drive up to Chamarel for the Seven Colored Earths, a waterfall viewpoint and a rum distillery.

Paddleboarding, kayaking and snorkeling are close at hand. Choose operators who keep a respectful distance from dolphins. The sun is intense on the lagoon, so cover up and reapply reef-safe sunscreen often.

Getting There

Fly into Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (MRU) in the southeast. The drive to Le Morne takes about 75 to 90 minutes, around the south coast or across the island. A private transfer through the resort is the easiest option after a long flight.

From the US you will need at least one connection, usually through Dubai, Doha, Paris or Johannesburg. Many couples split the trip with a night on the way, which makes arriving far more pleasant.

Le Morne is the far corner of the island, so plan excursions with a driver rather than daily long drives. La Gaulette, Tamarin and Black River are a short taxi ride north for a change of dinner scene. Driving is on the left and the mountain roads up to Chamarel are steep and winding.

Is It Worth It?

For couples who want sunsets, a famous view and a resort with a playful streak, yes. LUX* Le Morne usually costs less than The St. Regis Le Morne Resort next door and offers lively touches that make the stay feel personal. Shoulder seasons bring better rates and calmer weather.

Pick elsewhere if you want total quiet. Families are welcome and the main areas can feel busy in school holidays. Couples who want the most polished, formal service on the peninsula should compare The St. Regis Le Morne Resort. Those who want long powdery beaches and sunrise swims are better served on the east coast around Belle Mare.

A honeymoon that splits time between Le Morne for sunsets and the east coast for calm beaches shows off both sides of Mauritius.

Insider tips

  1. Book a beachfront or lagoon-view room for sunsets from your own terrace.
  2. Reserve the treehouse breakfast early in your stay, since slots are limited.
  3. Remember that KAWAII and EAST are outside the all-inclusive plan, with only a partial credit.
  4. Hike Le Morne Brabant at dawn with a guide to avoid the midday heat.

FAQ

LUX* Le Morne questions, answered

Is LUX* Le Morne good for a honeymoon?

Yes, especially for couples who like a relaxed, friendly resort with plenty to do. The west-facing beach gives nightly sunsets, the treehouse and 500 Candles Dinner offer private romantic moments and the spa is a good escape. It welcomes families, so ask for a room away from the main pool if you want more quiet.

Is LUX* Le Morne all-inclusive?

It offers an all-inclusive plan, but it is optional. Breakfast and half-board rates are also available. On the all-inclusive plan, the KAWAII and EAST restaurants are excluded, though you get a partial food credit there. If those restaurants are a priority, compare the cost of half board plus paying for a few special dinners.

How far is LUX* Le Morne from the airport?

About 75 to 90 minutes by car from Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (MRU), depending on traffic and route. The resort can arrange private transfers. Le Morne is at the far southwest corner of Mauritius, so plan longer excursions with a driver rather than renting a car.

Can you kitesurf at LUX* Le Morne?

Yes. The lagoon at Le Morne is one of the best-known kitesurfing spots in the Indian Ocean, with steady winds and shallow water that suit beginners. Lessons are easy to arrange near the resort. Non-surfers can paddleboard, kayak or simply watch from the beach. Wind is strongest roughly from May to October.

What is the treehouse at LUX* Le Morne?

A wooden treehouse by the sea that the resort uses for private experiences. You can book breakfast, lunch or dinner up in the branches, or a Cinema Paradiso movie night for two priced from about €330. It is one of the most popular honeymoon bookings, so reserve it as soon as you arrive.
