Hacienda San Angel

Twelve suites, three pools and the cathedral crown just below your terrace

Hacienda San Angel is the classic romantic retreat of Puerto Vallarta: 12 suites spread across a cluster of historic townhouse villas on the hill above the old town, joined into one hotel and filled with antiques, carved wood and religious art. One of the villas was once a home of actor Richard Burton. The place still has the feel of a private house rather than a hotel.

It suits couples who want character, views and walkable dinners more than resort facilities. From the terraces you look over terracotta rooftops to the crown of the cathedral and the bay. There are three pools, including the La Luna pool. A rooftop restaurant draws local diners as well as guests.

The Michelin Guide lists it and notes that there is no beach on site, which is the honest trade-off: you swap sand for privacy, history and a five-minute walk down to the Malecón. It is kid-free for most of the year, with families allowed only in summer. Rates are approximate, but expect boutique pricing that varies widely by suite and season.

Why Couples Love Hacienda San Angel

Puerto Vallarta is a real Mexican town with a cobbled center. Hacienda San Angel puts you right above it. Mornings start with church bells and the smell of coffee. Evenings end with lights coming on along the Malecón below.

The hotel's charm is in the details. Each suite has its own name and personality, with antique furniture, rich fabrics and art collected over years. Terraces open to the bay at every turn. It feels like staying in a well-loved private house, which is exactly what it once was. The Hollywood history adds to the romance: Burton and Elizabeth Taylor put Vallarta on the map in the 1960s. Their old neighborhood is still known as Gringo Gulch.

Suites to Book

All 12 rooms are suites, grouped into categories.

  • The San Miguel Presidential Suite is the largest and most private.
  • Heavenly Suites, such as Celestial and Rincón de Ángeles, are among the most romantic, with big views.
  • Seraphim Suites, including Angels View, San José and Vista de Santos, sit in the middle of the range.
  • Archangel Suites, such as San Gabriel, Milagros and Garden of Angels, are the entry level, with more garden settings.

For a honeymoon, book a Heavenly Suite. The views over the rooftops and bay are the reason to stay here. These suites make the most of them. If the budget is tight, ask for an Archangel or Seraphim suite with a terrace or view.

The hotel is on a hillside with stairs, so it is not ideal for anyone with limited mobility.

Food, Drink and the Pools

Hacienda San Angel Gourmet is the rooftop restaurant, serving upscale Mexican and international dishes with views over the town and bay. It is open for breakfast, all-day dining and brunch. It also attracts local diners, which is a good sign. Book a table at sunset for at least one dinner.

The three pools are spread through the villas, so you can usually find a quiet one. The La Luna pool is the favorite for evening swims. Spa treatments are offered in your suite or by the pool rather than in a dedicated spa building.

Downtown dining is the other big advantage. The Zona Romántica, a short taxi or a longer downhill walk away, has some of the best restaurants in western Mexico. Ask the concierge for reservations at popular spots on weekends and in high season.

Things to Do

The hotel's location makes it easy to see the best of Vallarta.

  • Walk the Malecón at sunset, a few minutes downhill from the hotel.
  • Take a water taxi to Yelapa, a village reachable only by boat.
  • Watch humpback whales in the bay from about December to March.
  • Snorkel at Los Arcos marine park off the southern coast.
  • Spend a morning at the Vallarta Botanical Garden in the hills south of town.

For beach days, head to Playa de los Muertos or take a boat to quieter coves south of town. Las Caletas, once the home of director John Huston, is a popular boat-trip destination. The hill and stairs are steep, so wear comfortable shoes and take taxis back up at night after dinner.

Getting There

Fly into Puerto Vallarta International Airport (PVR), which has nonstop flights from many US cities. The drive to the old town takes about 25 to 30 minutes by taxi, depending on traffic. Use the official airport taxis or a pre-booked transfer.

The hotel is on Calle Miramar in El Centro, on the hill behind the cathedral. The streets are steep and narrow, so let the driver get you as close as possible and ask the hotel for help with bags.

You will not need a car. Taxis are plentiful and inexpensive. App-based rides work in the city. Water taxis from Los Muertos pier reach Yelapa and the southern coves.

Is It Worth It?

For couples who want romance, history and views in the middle of town, yes. Hacienda San Angel is one of the most atmospheric small hotels in Mexico. Its location puts the best of Puerto Vallarta at your doorstep.

Pick elsewhere if you want a beach on site, a big spa or modern resort facilities. The Michelin Guide notes that it lacks some modern five-star extras, so expect old-world comfort rather than sleek design. Couples who want a kid-free beachfront resort should compare Hotel Mousai on the south coast or Casa Velas in Marina Vallarta. Families traveling with children can only stay in summer.

Combine a few nights here with a beach resort for a honeymoon that has both culture and sand.

Insider tips

  1. Book a Heavenly Suite such as Celestial for the best views.
  2. Reserve a sunset table at the rooftop restaurant on your first night.
  3. Take taxis back uphill after dinner, since the streets are steep.
  4. Plan whale watching between December and March, when humpbacks fill the bay.
