Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar is the polished, full-service choice on Oman's Green Mountain: a resort of stone and timber laid along the rim of a canyon about 2,000 meters up, two hours' drive from Muscat. Every room faces the gorge. The 33 pool villas give couples a private plunge with the drop at the edge of the view. Princess Diana stood on the same rocky point in 1986. The resort's viewing platform there is now the place for sunset drinks and stargazing.

It suits couples who want the cool air, the hiking and the drama of the plateau with plenty of comfort around them. There are five places to eat, a spa with a traditional hammam and enough staff to arrange a private dinner on the rim at short notice. The trade-off is scale. With more than a hundred rooms and villas it is busier than the smaller, design-led Alila Jabal Akhdar nearby. Weekends draw families from Muscat. Book a pool villa, go midweek and it feels considerably more private.

Highlights at a glance

  • Every room and villa faces the canyon
  • 33 private pool villas
  • Diana's viewpoint for sunset and stargazing
  • Five restaurants and bars, including one in a fort
  • Spa with a traditional hammam

Why Couples Love Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar

The setting carries the resort. The plateau is a different Oman from the coast: cool nights, terraced villages clinging to the slopes and a canyon that drops away almost beneath the pool deck. Afternoons are bright and mild for much of the year. In winter you may want a jacket after dark.

The resort leans into romance where it counts. Diana's viewpoint, a platform on the canyon edge, is a fine place to watch the cliffs change color before dinner. At night the lack of light pollution makes the stars remarkable. The team can set up a private dining table on the rim with lanterns and blankets.

The architecture borrows from Omani forts, with thick walls, courtyards and a central fortress-like restaurant. It feels rooted in place rather than generic. The views from almost every corner keep pulling your attention back to the gorge.

Rooms and Villas to Book

All 82 rooms face the canyon. At about 60 square meters, with balconies looking over the drop, they are a comfortable base if you plan to spend your days walking the villages.

For a honeymoon, the pool villas are worth the extra cost. There are 33 of them, with one, two or three bedrooms. Each has a private pool and outdoor space. The one-bedroom villas are the right size for two and give you somewhere to swim and lounge without sharing the main pool, which gets lively on weekends. The three-bedroom villa is billed by the resort as the most luxurious of its kind in Oman and is really for families or groups.

Ask for a villa on the canyon edge rather than one set back in the grounds. The views are the reason you are here.

Food, Drink and the Spa

Five venues keep you from feeling stuck on the mountain. Al Maisan is the all-day restaurant with mountain views and the breakfast spread. Bella Vista serves contemporary Italian with a canyon panorama. Al Qalaa, set inside the resort's fort, is the Middle Eastern restaurant and hosts a shuwa grill night twice a week, a good chance to try Oman's slow-roasted festive lamb. Al Baha is a courtyard café and deli. Al Burj handles drinks, shisha and light bites in the evening.

Private dining can be arranged around the resort, including on the canyon rim. In-villa dining runs around the clock.

The Anantara Spa offers massages, scrubs and a traditional hammam ritual, which feels especially good after a day on rocky village paths. Book couples' treatments early on busy weekends.

Things to Do

The classic walk links the villages of Al Ayn, Al Aqr and Ash Shirayjah along the canyon rim, past rose terraces, pomegranate groves and old falaj irrigation channels. At a gentle pace it takes two to three hours. In late March and April, families distill rose water over wood fires. The resort can arrange a visit.

The abandoned mud-brick village of Wadi Bani Habib is another short, rewarding outing. More active couples can book guided hikes, via ferrata routes or mountain biking through the resort.

Dress modestly in the villages, covering shoulders and knees for both of you. Ask before photographing people. The altitude is high enough to notice on steep climbs, so drink water and take it easy on the first day. Back at the resort, stargazing sessions on the viewing platform are a quiet way to end the evening.

Getting There

The resort is about two hours by car from Muscat International Airport (MCT), via Nizwa or Birkat Al Mouz. The last stretch is a steep mountain road. A police checkpoint at the bottom only lets four-wheel-drive vehicles through. If you are renting a car for the rest of your Oman trip, make sure it is a genuine 4x4. Otherwise the resort can arrange a transfer.

Most couples pair two or three nights here with Muscat and a stay in the Wahiba Sands desert or along the coast. Nizwa's fort and Friday livestock market are an easy stop on the way up or down.

Spring and fall are the best seasons. Summer is pleasant on the mountain compared with the coast, while winter nights can get properly cold, so pack layers.

Is It Worth It?

Yes, especially in a pool villa. The canyon setting is unusual even by Gulf standards. The resort makes it comfortable with good food, a proper spa and staff used to arranging celebrations. Rates are lower than at the top coastal resorts in Muscat for much of the year, though peak periods push them up sharply.

The main reason to choose elsewhere is atmosphere. Anantara is larger and busier than Alila Jabal Akhdar, which suits couples who prefer hushed, minimalist design and fewer guests. Weekends bring families and groups from Muscat, so the main pool and restaurants can feel lively.

If you want variety in dining, a private pool and a famous view without giving up resort polish, Anantara is the better fit of the two. Plan your stay for weekdays and you get the best of it.

Insider tips

  1. Request a pool villa on the canyon edge rather than one set back in the grounds.
  2. Visit midweek to avoid the Thursday to Saturday crowd from Muscat.
  3. Come in late March or April to see rose water being distilled in the villages.
  4. Rent a true 4x4 or book the resort transfer, since other cars are turned back at the checkpoint.

FAQ

Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar Resort questions, answered

Do we need a 4x4 to reach the resort?

Yes. A police checkpoint at the foot of the mountain road only allows four-wheel-drive vehicles to continue up to the plateau. If your rental car is not a genuine 4x4, you will be turned back. Many couples ask the resort to arrange a transfer from Muscat or leave their regular car at the bottom and get collected there.

Should we book a room or a pool villa?

The canyon-view rooms are comfortable and well sized, with balconies over the gorge. For a honeymoon, a one-bedroom pool villa is the upgrade that matters: you get a private pool and outdoor space, which helps on weekends when the main pool fills up. Ask for one on the canyon edge to make the most of the view.

How cold does it get on Jebel Akhdar?

At about 2,000 meters, the plateau is much cooler than Muscat. Summer days are warm and pleasant while spring and fall are mild. Winter nights can drop close to freezing. Bring a warm layer for evenings on the viewing platform at any time of year plus a proper jacket if you visit between December and February.

Which is better for honeymooners, Anantara or Alila?

Anantara has more restaurants, a hammam spa and pool villas, with a more polished resort feel. Alila Jabal Akhdar is smaller, quieter and more minimalist, with a strong hiking focus. Choose Anantara for dining variety and private pools. Choose Alila if calm and design matter most and you are happy with fewer facilities.

How many nights should we stay?

Two or three nights is ideal. That gives you one day for the village walk along the canyon rim, another for a guided hike or a trip to Wadi Bani Habib and time to enjoy the spa and your villa. Most couples combine the mountain with Muscat and a night or two in the desert.
