The short answer

AlUla is a desert honeymoon for couples who love archaeology, silence and design hotels. The Nabataean tombs at Hegra echo Petra with far fewer people, while canyon resorts like Banyan Tree AlUla offer villas with private pools. Go November to March, when days are mild and nights cold. Prices are high and there is no alcohol anywhere. Saudi Arabia carries a Level 3 State Department advisory, though AlUla is far from the Level 4 zones, so book flexibly. Plan three nights. Don't miss a morning tour of Hegra.

Best for
  • History lovers who want Petra without crowds
  • Couples who want resort privacy
  • Couples happy to skip alcohol
Maybe skip it if
  • A wine toast matters to your honeymoon
  • You want nightlife or beach time

AlUla is a long, narrow valley in northwest Saudi Arabia, fed by groundwater and lined with date palms, framed by sandstone cliffs worn into arches, pillars and mushroom shapes. People have lived here for thousands of years. The Dadanite and Lihyanite kingdoms built their capital here. Later the Nabataeans, the same people who carved Petra, cut more than a hundred monumental tombs into the rocks at Hegra, Saudi Arabia's first UNESCO World Heritage site.

For most of the last century it was almost unknown to outsiders. Since the country opened to tourism, AlUla has become its showpiece, with a small airport, guided heritage tours and a set of resorts designed to disappear into the canyons.

It makes a striking honeymoon stop for couples who love archaeology, desert silence and design hotels. Remember that Saudi Arabia is under a Level 3 State Department advisory. AlUla itself is far from the Level 4 border zones, but plan with flexible bookings and read our country guide first.

Why Honeymoon in AlUla

The setting is extraordinary. Drive a few minutes from any resort and you are among rock formations that look sculpted, with no fences, no crowds and few signs of the modern world. At night the sky is very dark and the silence is total.

Hegra is the anchor. Its tombs share Petra's carved facades, stepped crowns and eagle motifs, but you may share a tomb face with only a handful of other people. Qasr al-Farid, a single tomb cut from a lone boulder, is the image you will remember.

The hotels make AlUla work for a honeymoon. Several resorts sit in quiet canyons with private plunge pools, outdoor showers and terraces facing the cliffs. Days fall into an easy pattern: an early heritage tour, lunch and a swim, a spa or nap through the warm afternoon and a sunset outing.

There is no alcohol, no nightlife and not much shopping. For couples who want an adventure in stillness, that is part of the appeal.

When to Go

Come between November and March. Winter days are mild to warm, typically in the 60s and 70s°F, with clear skies and dry air. Nights are cold, sometimes dipping into the 40s°F or lower, so pack a warm layer for stargazing and sunrise balloon flights.

October and April are shoulder months. Afternoons get hot, but mornings and evenings are lovely and resort rates may be lower.

From May to September temperatures regularly pass 100°F and can go much higher. Some experiences pause or move to early mornings and resorts often cut rates. A summer visit is possible if you want a resort escape, but long outdoor days are not realistic.

AlUla runs cultural events through the cool season, with concerts at the mirrored Maraya hall, food festivals and an annual balloon festival in some years. These are fun but push prices up and fill rooms early. Check the event calendar on the official AlUla tourism site before choosing dates.

Where to Stay

AlUla's lodging is spread out, so choose by setting rather than by distance to town.

  • Ashar Valley: a canyon south of the Old Town with two of the best-known couples' options. Banyan Tree AlUla offers tented villas with private pools against the cliffs. Habitas AlUla has low wooden villas, wellness classes and a laid-back, social feel.
  • Old Town area: Dar Tantora The House Hotel occupies restored mud-brick houses in the historic quarter, lit by candlelight at night. It suits couples who want history underfoot.
  • Desert camps and eco-lodges: simpler options appear across the valley, especially in season. Some run glamping with firepits.

Rooms are limited and the best villas sell out for winter holidays and festivals. Book early and confirm which tours and transfers are included. Prices are high, but the best resorts deliver privacy you rarely find elsewhere in the region.

Romantic Things to Do

Take a guided tour of Hegra. Visits leave from the visitor center on official shuttles, with local guides called rawi who explain Nabataean life and burial customs. Go in the morning or late afternoon when the sandstone glows.

Spend sunset at Elephant Rock, a huge arch shaped like an elephant's trunk. A lounge area with low seating and firepits fills up after dark while the rock is lit softly.

Book a hot air balloon flight in winter. You lift off before dawn and drift over canyons and palms as the light comes up.

Walk the Old Town's mud-brick lanes in the evening, then eat on a rooftop nearby. Visit Dadan's ancient tombs and Jabal Ikmah, often called an open-air library for its hundreds of inscriptions. Drive up to Harrat Viewpoint for a wide look over the valley. If there is a concert at Maraya during your stay, go just to see the mirrored building in the desert.

Getting There and Around

AlUla International Airport (ULH) has regular domestic flights from Riyadh and Jeddah, plus some seasonal international links. Flights from both cities take around 1.5 hours. Coming from the US, the simplest route is a nonstop to Jeddah or Riyadh followed by a domestic connection. Schedules change often, so confirm close to travel.

By road, AlUla is roughly three to four hours from Medina along desert highways, but most visitors fly.

Once there, you need wheels. Resorts arrange transfers and many sell or include tours. Heritage sites such as Hegra and Dadan can only be visited with tickets bought in advance and are usually reached by official shuttle or guided tour. Rental cars are available at the airport if you prefer to explore on your own. The roads are good and quiet. Taxis and ride-hailing are limited, so do not count on picking one up after a late dinner.

Food and Drink

Most meals will happen at your resort. The better ones cook seriously: Arabic mezze, grilled lamb and fish, plus international menus. Expect to pay luxury prices.

Outside the hotels, AlUla's restaurant scene has grown quickly, with seasonal pop-ups near the Old Town and a few well-reviewed places in the farm areas. Try dishes from the Hijaz and Najd regions such as kabsa, rice cooked with spices and meat. Look for jareesh too, a savory cracked wheat porridge.

Dates are the local pride. AlUla's palm groves produce many varieties. A date tasting with Arabic coffee scented with cardamom makes a good afternoon break. Some farms welcome visitors in harvest season, roughly late summer into fall.

There is no alcohol anywhere, including at resorts. Bars serve elaborate mocktails, fresh juices and specialty coffee instead. Book dinner reservations in season, especially at Old Town restaurants, which are small and popular.

Honeymoon Tips

Book heritage tours ahead, especially Hegra. Slots sell out in winter and you cannot simply turn up at the gates.

Pack layers. Mornings and evenings can be properly cold in winter, while midday sun is strong. Sunglasses, a hat and closed shoes are useful at the rock sites.

Dress modestly when you leave the resort. Covered shoulders and knees are expected for both of you. Foreign women do not need to cover their hair.

Ask your resort to set up a private dinner in the desert or a firepit evening under the stars. Most will arrange it with a day's notice.

Remember that Saudi Arabia's advisory is Level 3. AlUla is far from the Level 4 areas, but airspace and domestic flights can be disrupted during regional escalations. Keep your insurance details and the US Embassy's contact information handy. Enroll in STEP before you travel.

FAQ

AlUla honeymoon FAQ

How many nights do we need in AlUla?

Three nights suits most couples. That gives you a Hegra tour, Elephant Rock at sunset, Dadan and Jabal Ikmah, the Old Town and time to enjoy your resort. Four or five nights works if you want a slower pace or a balloon flight that may need a weather backup morning. Two nights feels rushed given the flights.

Is AlUla affected by the Level 3 advisory?

The Level 3 advisory covers all of Saudi Arabia, mainly because of missile and drone threats. AlUla is far from the Level 4 areas in the far south and has not been a focus of attacks. Domestic flights and airspace can still be disrupted during regional escalations, so book flexible fares and buy insurance that covers the region.

How does Hegra compare with Petra?

Both were carved by the Nabataeans, so the tomb facades look related. Petra is larger, with the Siq and the Treasury. Hegra is more spread out across open desert, with individual tombs on separate outcrops. It is also far less crowded. Many couples find the quiet at Hegra more moving than the scale at Petra.

Can we visit Hegra on our own?

Not freely. Access is managed and you need tickets booked in advance, usually including transport from the visitor center and a guide or storyteller. Some tour formats include vintage vehicles or longer walks. Book through the official AlUla experiences channels or your resort, especially in the busy winter months.

Is there alcohol at AlUla resorts?

No. Alcohol is illegal throughout Saudi Arabia, including at luxury resorts. You cannot bring it in. Resorts make up for it with creative mocktails, fresh juices, Arabic coffee and dates. If a toast with wine matters for your honeymoon, plan a stop before or after in a country where it is served.
