Amangalla is the grand hotel of Galle Fort, run by Aman inside the old New Oriental Hotel on Church Street. It has welcomed guests for more than 150 years. Today it is the most polished place to stay within the fort walls. Rooms keep their original wooden floors, high sash windows and four-poster beds. High tea is served on a veranda that faces the street. Out back, a pool sits in a garden with views toward the fort and harbor.
It suits couples who want history, quiet luxury and the whole fort on foot. You can walk out the front door to the ramparts for sunset, browse the jewelers on Pedlar Street and be back for a swim before dinner. Service is the Aman kind: calm, attentive and never in your way.
What it is not is a beach resort. There is no sand at the door and the fort is busy with day visitors in high season. Many couples pair two or three nights here with a beach stay along the south coast. Aman itself suggests pairing it with Amanwella, its sister resort farther east.

Why Couples Love Amangalla
The building does most of the romancing. Ceilings are lofty, floors are dark polished wood and the long veranda makes you want to sit with a pot of tea and watch the street. It feels like a house that has been lived in for centuries, because it has.
The location is the other half. Galle Fort is small enough to walk end to end in twenty minutes. Amangalla sits right in the middle of it. Sunset on the ramparts is a ten-minute stroll. The lighthouse, the Groote Kerk and the best cafes are all closer than that.
Inside, the hotel is calm even when the fort is busy. Day-trippers leave by early evening and the streets quiet down. That is when the place shows its best side, with dinner in the Dining Room or a drink on the veranda while the street lamps come on.
Rooms and Suites to Book
Amangalla has a range of rooms spread across the Church Street, Middle Street and Garden wings. All have the heritage look of wooden floors, tall windows and canopied beds.
- Bedroom: overlooks the 18th-century Groote Kerk, a good entry point.
- Chamber: in the Church Street Wing with treetop views.
- Veranda Chamber: in the Garden Wing with its own outdoor space, a strong honeymoon pick.
- Garden Bedroom: opens straight onto the gardens near the pool.
- Suite and Amangalla Suite: more space, with fort and harbor views from the Church Street Wing.
- Garden House: a two-story house with upper and lower lounges and a wraparound balcony.
For most couples, the Veranda Chamber or an Amangalla Suite gives the best mix of space and atmosphere. The Garden House is the splurge for a longer stay or a special anniversary.
Food, Drink and the Spa
The Dining Room is the formal heart of the hotel, with white linen, chandeliers and a menu that moves between Sri Lankan dishes and lighter international plates. It opens onto the veranda, where afternoon high tea is a fort tradition worth booking at least once. Watch Church Street go by over scones and fresh Ceylon tea.
The spa sits in historic rooms and offers massages and Ayurvedic treatments. Every stay includes daily use of the hydrotherapy suites for up to 30 minutes, subject to availability, so book a slot early in your stay. Aman also runs a three-night Ayurveda retreat here with meals, treatments and yoga for couples who want a structured reset.
Don't eat every meal in. Galle Fort has some of the best small restaurants on the island. Part of the pleasure is walking to dinner and back through the lit streets.
Why guests fall for it
Things to Do
Galle rewards slow days. Start with the ramparts at sunrise or sunset, walking from the clock tower to the lighthouse with the sea on one side and the old town on the other. Spend a morning on the side streets, where jewelers, design shops and galleries sit in old Dutch houses.
Beyond the walls, Jungle Beach below Rumassala is a short tuk-tuk ride and good for a swim in calm months. Unawatuna is close by for a long beach lunch. At dawn, the stilt fishermen near Koggala are worth an early start.
Aman can arrange longer outings too, including tea plantation visits and an elephant safari at Udawalawe National Park. Udawalawe is a long day by road, so plan it for a quieter day of your trip. If one of you wants to shop and the other wants to swim, the fort makes splitting up for an hour very easy.
Getting There
Galle is about two hours from Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) via the Southern Expressway, depending on traffic around Colombo. Most couples arrange a private driver through the hotel or the driver who is taking them around the island.
For something faster, Aman notes that seaplanes fly from Colombo to Koggala, about 25 minutes from the fort. A helicopter transfer of around an hour can be arranged. Both cost far more than a car but save time if you arrive on a late flight.
Inside the fort, cars move slowly through narrow streets. The hotel sits on Church Street, so drivers can pull up close to the door. Once you arrive, you will hardly need a vehicle again until you leave. Trains also run along the coast to Galle station, just outside the fort walls, if you prefer to travel by rail.
Is It Worth It?
If you want the fort's history in comfort, Amangalla is the best address inside the walls. You are paying for the building, the service and the location. All three deliver. Rates are not published on the resort page and vary widely by season and room. Expect a premium over other fort hotels, approximately $850 a night and up for two.
Couples who want beach time from their room should look elsewhere or split the stay. Amangalla works best for two or three nights. The smaller Galle Fort Hotel on Church Street costs less and feels more intimate, though it has fewer facilities. Couples who prefer a sea view with sand at the door could try a resort along the coast toward Ahangama or Weligama for the beach half of the trip.
