Bar Harbor Inn

Eight waterfront acres in town, with the Shore Path starting at the lawn

The Bar Harbor Inn is the best waterfront hotel in Bar Harbor for a honeymoon on Mount Desert Island. It sits on eight acres of lawn right on Frenchman Bay, at the edge of downtown, so you can watch sailboats and lobster boats from your balcony and still walk to dinner in five minutes. Acadia National Park starts just beyond town.

Parts of the inn date to the 1800s, when it opened as the Mount Desert Reading Room, a gentlemen's club for the wealthy summer families who built the island's grand cottages. Today it has three buildings, an infinity pool by the water, a spa and restaurants with bay views. The Oceanfront Lodge, with private balconies over the water, is the one to book for a honeymoon.

It suits couples who want a classic New England waterfront stay with easy access to both Acadia's trails and Bar Harbor's restaurants. It suits less well if you want seclusion, since town is busy in summer and the grounds are popular with visitors walking the Shore Path. For a quieter island base, look at Northeast Harbor or the quiet side instead.

Why Couples Love the Bar Harbor Inn

Location is the main reason. Very few hotels on Mount Desert Island combine a true waterfront with an in-town address. You can start the day with coffee on your balcony overlooking the Porcupine Islands, hike in Acadia, come back for a swim in the infinity pool and stroll into town for lobster rolls without getting in the car.

The grounds feel spacious for a town hotel, with wide lawns sloping down to the bay where you can sit and watch the light change. The Shore Path, a public walkway along the water, runs past the inn and is lovely at sunrise. In the evenings, the harbor lights come on and boats rock at their moorings. It is classic Maine in the best way.

Rooms and Suites to Book

The inn has three buildings and the choice matters for a honeymoon.

  • The Main Inn is the historic building, with 50 rooms that have been renovated. It has the most character and some rooms face the bay.
  • The Oceanfront Lodge has rooms with private balconies and panoramic views of Frenchman Bay. This is the best pick for couples.
  • The Newport Building, renovated in 2022, overlooks the grounds and is a good value option.

Bay-view suites are the top choice for a special stay. Garden and grounds-view rooms cost less but lose the water view that makes this inn special. Book early for July, August and early October, when rooms sell out and minimum stays may apply.

Food, Drink and the Spa

The inn offers three dining experiences: breakfast with an ocean view, a casual lunch by the water and fine dining in the evening with nightly entertainment in season. Poolside snacks are available on warm days. A dinner by the window as the sun sets over the harbor is a lovely way to mark the honeymoon.

Bar Harbor also has dozens of restaurants within walking distance, from lobster pounds to seasonal farm-to-table spots, so many couples mix inn dining with nights out in town. The spa offers massages and other treatments using natural products inspired by the ocean. After a long hike up Cadillac Mountain or along the Precipice Trail, a couples' massage and a swim in the infinity pool is a good reward.

Things to Do

Acadia National Park is the reason most couples come and the inn makes a good base.

  • Drive or hike up Cadillac Mountain for sunrise. In season, a vehicle reservation is usually required for the summit road.
  • Walk to Bar Island at low tide across the gravel sandbar that starts in town. Watch the tide times closely.
  • Cycle the carriage roads, the stone-bridged paths built by the Rockefeller family.
  • Take a whale-watching cruise or a sunset sail from the harbor next to the inn.
  • Hike the Beehive or Precipice trails if you like iron rungs and exposure, or the Ocean Path for an easier walk.

Pack layers. Even summer mornings can be cool and foggy on the water.

Getting There

Hancock County–Bar Harbor Airport (BHB) is about 20 minutes away with limited service from Boston. Bangor International Airport (BGR) is about an hour and 15 minutes by car, with connections to several US hubs. Portland (PWM) is about three hours away and Boston about five, which makes a coastal road trip up Route 1 a popular way to arrive.

You do not need a car in Bar Harbor itself and the free Island Explorer shuttle buses serve Acadia in summer. A car is useful for reaching the quiet side of the island, Northeast Harbor and the Schoodic Peninsula. Much of Bar Harbor closes from late fall to spring, so check the inn's opening dates if you are traveling outside the main season.

Is It Worth It?

For a waterfront stay in Bar Harbor, yes. Few hotels offer this mix of bay views, an in-town location and resort extras like a pool and spa. Book an oceanfront room or suite to get full value.

There are trade-offs. Summer rates are high, especially in July, August and during fall foliage and the town can be crowded with cruise ship passengers on some days. The Shore Path brings walkers past the grounds, so it is not fully private. Couples who want a romantic retreat in the woods or a quiet harbor village may prefer the Asticou Inn in Northeast Harbor or a cottage on the quiet side. For an easy, classic New England honeymoon base with water views and Acadia on the doorstep, the Bar Harbor Inn is a solid choice.

Insider tips

  1. Book the Oceanfront Lodge for a balcony over the bay.
  2. Reserve a Cadillac Mountain vehicle permit in advance if you want to drive up for sunrise.
  3. Check the tide chart before walking to Bar Island so you do not get stranded.
  4. Avoid cruise ship days in town if you can; ask the front desk for the schedule.

FAQ

Bar Harbor Inn questions, answered

Is the Bar Harbor Inn on the water?

Yes. The inn sits on eight acres directly on Frenchman Bay at the edge of downtown Bar Harbor. Rooms in the Oceanfront Lodge have private balconies with panoramic views over the bay and the Porcupine Islands. The public Shore Path runs along the water next to the grounds.

Which building is best for a honeymoon?

The Oceanfront Lodge is the best choice for couples, with private balconies looking over the water. The historic Main Inn has more character and some of its rooms and suites face the bay. The Newport Building, renovated in 2022, overlooks the grounds and offers better value.

When is the best time to visit?

June and September are excellent, with mild weather and fewer crowds than July and August. Early October brings fall colors, which is beautiful but busy and expensive. Much of Bar Harbor closes in winter, so check the inn's season before planning a trip outside the warmer months.

Do we need a car?

Not for Bar Harbor itself. The inn is a short walk from downtown and the free Island Explorer shuttle serves Acadia National Park in summer. A car helps if you want to explore Northeast Harbor, the quiet side of the island or the Schoodic Peninsula, or arrive by road trip.

How far is the inn from Acadia National Park?

Acadia begins just outside Bar Harbor. The Park Loop Road, Sand Beach, Jordan Pond and the Cadillac Mountain summit road are all a short drive away. You can walk to the start of the Bar Island sandbar from town at low tide.
