Castle Hill Inn is Newport's classic special-occasion hotel and the one most couples picture when they think of a romantic weekend on the Rhode Island coast. It occupies a 40-acre peninsula at the mouth of Newport Harbor, where the rocky shoreline of Narragansett Bay opens into the Atlantic. There is a lighthouse at the tip, lawns that roll down to the water and a line of Adirondack chairs that fills up every evening for the sunset.

The inn began as the summer cottage of Alexander Agassiz, a Harvard marine biologist. Today it is a member of Relais & Châteaux and has been recognized by the Michelin Guide. Rooms are spread across the Victorian mansion on the hill, a cluster of beach houses and cottages on private dunes and a few bay-side retreats, including the Harbor House that Grace Kelly is said to have used as a summer retreat.

It suits couples who want a quiet, polished base with the ocean outside the door and Newport's mansions, sailing and restaurants a short drive away. It is not a big resort with a pool complex. Rates are high in summer, so value-minded couples may prefer an autumn or spring visit.

Why Couples Love Castle Hill Inn

The setting carries everything. Few hotels in New England give you this much private shoreline: walking trails lead past the Castle Hill Lighthouse, the lawn faces west for long sunsets over the East Passage and a small private beach is reserved for staying guests. Sailboats glide past all afternoon in summer.

The mood is relaxed rather than stiff. Couples spend long hours on the Lawn Terrace with chowder and rosé, wander down to the rocks, then dress up a little for dinner. It feels removed from the crowds on Thames Street even though downtown Newport is only about ten minutes by car along Ocean Drive. Service is attentive in the way of a good country house hotel, with staff happy to book sailing trips, mansion tours or a table in town.

Rooms and Cottages to Book

Accommodation falls into three groups.

  • By the Beach: beach houses and cottages set in private sand dunes with ocean views. The Premier Beach Cottage stands apart from everything else, which makes it the most private honeymoon choice. Fireplaces and soaking tubs are offered on request and depending on availability, so ask when you book.
  • On the Hill: seven rooms and suites in the Agassiz Mansion. The Turret Suite sits at the highest point with windows on three sides over the bay, the ocean and the lighthouse. The Lighthouse Suite is roomier with partial water views.
  • By the Bay: the Harbor House, with a private deck and a staircase down to a secluded cove, plus a suite and a room in the Chalet above the event space.

For most honeymooners, a beach cottage wins.

Food, Drink and the Spa

Dining is a big part of the experience. Aurelia is the main restaurant, with views over the water and a menu built around New England seafood and local farms. On warm days the Lawn Terrace is the place for a long lunch outside, while the Adirondack Bar, the Terrace Bar and the Mansion Bar cover cocktails at different hours. Picnics and in-room dining are available if you would rather stay on your deck.

The Retreat at Castle Hill offers treatments with Farmaesthetics products, including massages and facials. It is a small spa rather than a destination facility, so think of it as an add-on. The inn also runs yoga and meditation sessions and has an outdoor Forest Gym. Summer weekend dinner reservations should be made well ahead, even for staying guests.

Being close to Newport without the crowds

Things to Do

Start on the property: walk the trails to the lighthouse, take a garden tour or spend an afternoon on the private beach. The inn can arrange sailing, fishing and surfing. Newport is one of the best places on the East Coast to get out on a classic sailboat.

In town, tour The Breakers, Marble House or The Elms, then walk part of the Cliff Walk between the mansions and the ocean. Ocean Drive is a lovely loop by bike or car, passing Brenton Point State Park, where locals fly kites and watch the sunset. Couples who like food can split an evening between oyster bars on Bowen's Wharf and a dinner in town. In summer, Newport's jazz and folk festivals draw big crowds, so book early if your dates overlap. Ocean water stays cool well into June.

Getting There

The closest airport is Rhode Island T.F. Green International (PVD) in Warwick, about 40 minutes by car. Boston Logan (BOS) has more nonstop flights and is roughly 1.5–2 hours away, depending on traffic. New Yorkers often drive, which takes about three to four hours.

A car is useful for exploring Newport and the coast. The inn has parking. Once you arrive, everything on the property is walkable, though the beach cottages sit down the slope from the mansion. Summer traffic into Newport, especially on Fridays and over the Newport Pell Bridge, can be slow, so aim to arrive midweek or early in the day. Taxis and ride-hailing services cover dinners downtown if neither of you wants to drive.

Is It Worth It?

For a short, romantic stay on the New England coast, it is one of the strongest choices anywhere. Expect rates very roughly from the mid-hundreds of dollars a night in quieter months to well over $1,000 for a beach cottage on a summer weekend (approximate), plus dinners that add up quickly.

What you pay for is setting and privacy rather than facilities. There is no large pool, the spa is modest and summer weekends often carry minimum stays. Couples who want walk-out access to Thames Street restaurants might prefer The Vanderbilt downtown, while those who want Cliff Walk on the doorstep could look at The Chanler. Choose Castle Hill if a quiet lawn, a lighthouse and a sunset over the bay sound like the whole point.

Insider tips

  1. Ask for a fireplace and soaking tub when booking a beach cottage, since both depend on availability.
  2. Claim an Adirondack chair on the lawn about 45 minutes before sunset on summer evenings.
  3. Book the Turret Suite if you want the best panoramic view from inside your room.
  4. Visit in September or early October for warm days, smaller crowds and softer rates.

FAQ

Castle Hill Inn questions, answered

Which room is best for a honeymoon at Castle Hill Inn?

The beach cottages and beach houses on the dunes are the most romantic choice, with ocean views and patios. The Premier Beach Cottage stands apart for maximum privacy. If you prefer history and a view from above, the Turret Suite in the Agassiz Mansion has windows on three sides over the bay, the ocean and the lighthouse.

Does Castle Hill Inn have a beach?

Yes. There is a small private beach for staying guests on the peninsula, plus rocky shoreline and walking trails around the Castle Hill Lighthouse. The water off Newport stays cool for much of the year, so swimming is best in July and August. For bigger sandy beaches, Easton's Beach and Second Beach are a short drive away.

How far is Castle Hill Inn from downtown Newport?

It sits on Ocean Drive, roughly ten minutes by car from downtown Newport, Thames Street and Bowen's Wharf. That distance is part of the appeal, since the inn feels quiet and removed. Taxis and ride-hailing apps work well for evenings out, so neither of you has to drive after dinner.

Is there a spa at Castle Hill Inn?

There is a small spa, The Retreat at Castle Hill, offering massages and facials with Farmaesthetics products. The inn also offers yoga, meditation and an outdoor Forest Gym. It is not a large spa resort, so if long spa days are a priority, think of the treatments as a nice extra rather than the main reason to book.

When is the best time to visit Castle Hill Inn?

June through September brings warm weather, sailing and long evenings on the lawn, but also the highest rates and summer traffic. September and early October are a sweet spot, with mild days and fewer crowds. Winter is quiet and cozy, especially in a room with a fireplace, though some outdoor activities slow down.
