If Sedona's red rocks are the headline, Oak Creek is the love song playing underneath. L'Auberge de Sedona sits right on its banks, a cluster of cottages scattered beneath tall sycamores and cottonwoods, with the creek murmuring past and the buttes glowing above the treetops. It is a different mood from the desert resorts out in the canyons: shady, green and hushed, more mountain retreat than sun-baked spa.

The location is a quiet coup. You are tucked away on about 11 wooded acres, yet Uptown Sedona's galleries, shops and restaurants are only a couple of minutes away, with free rides into town. The romance comes from small things done well: wood-burning fireplaces, cedar outdoor showers, decks over the water, breakfast at a creekside table and stargazing with an astronomer after dinner. A member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, L'Auberge has been a Sedona favorite for decades. It remains one of the most reliably romantic places to stay in Arizona.

Life on Oak Creek

Oak Creek runs through the middle of the property and nearly everything revolves around it. Lawns slope down to the water, Adirondack chairs line the banks and the trees filter the hot Arizona sun into dappled shade. In the mornings, guests gather for the long-running tradition of feeding the resident ducks; in the evenings, the sound of the water carries into the cottages.

Above the creek, the red-rock formations of Sedona rise in every direction, so you get the best of both worlds: a cool riverside retreat with world-famous desert scenery as your backdrop. Higher on the property, a cliffside pool and bar trade creek views for panoramas of the buttes, a lovely spot for an afternoon swim and a sunset drink.

Cottages, Cliffs and the Creekhouse

Accommodations come in several flavors. The cottages are the soul of the place, scattered through the woods and along the water, most with a fireplace and a private deck, many with cedar outdoor showers. Creekside Cottages and Creekside Suites put you closest to the water. Some cottages add an outdoor hot tub on the deck, which is worth requesting for a honeymoon. Garden, Spa and Vista cottages offer different outlooks at a range of price points.

In the main building, the Lodge rooms and junior suites are brighter and closer to the restaurant and spa, while the rooms known as The Cliffs have been redesigned with a cleaner, more modern look and red-rock views. Bringing the whole wedding party? The Creekhouse is a five-bedroom home on the water that sleeps up to ten.

Dining by the Water

Cress on Oak Creek is the restaurant most couples come for. Set right beside the creek, it serves seasonal, locally sourced cooking that has earned a AAA Four Diamond rating. It is at its best at dinner, when the tables are candlelit and the trees overhead fade into darkness. It is also a popular choice for Sunday brunch. For something more casual, the Cress Bar and the cliffside Duck Pond pool bar serve lighter plates and cocktails.

The resort can also arrange private creekside dining, a table set for two at the water's edge with a dedicated server, which is about as romantic as Sedona gets. Coffee, tea and pastries are set out in the lobby each morning. The resort's Mexican-inspired sister restaurant, 89Agave Cantina, is up in Uptown if you want a lively night out.

Why guests fall for it

L'Apothecary Spa

The spa is intimate and recently renovated, with a focus on botanicals, water therapies and Sedona's well-known community of local healers. You can blend your own oils and scrubs at the apothecary bar, book forest-bathing sessions under the sycamores, or reserve a treatment in a creekside cabana, where the sound of the water does half the work.

Couples massages are the obvious honeymoon choice, but it is also worth exploring the more distinctly Sedona offerings, such as energy work and intuitive sessions, even if you are skeptical. A fitness center and complimentary yoga round out the wellness side. The overall scale stays small enough to feel personal rather than corporate.

Evenings Under Dark Skies

Sedona is an International Dark Sky Community. L'Auberge makes the most of it with stargazing sessions led by an astronomer, complete with telescope, held on the grounds after dark. It is one of the simplest and most memorable things you can do here: bundle up in a blanket, look up at Saturn's rings or a distant galaxy, then walk back along the creek to a fire waiting in your cottage.

By day, you can drive or take the resort's shuttle into Uptown, then head out to classic hikes such as Cathedral Rock, Devil's Bridge or the West Fork of Oak Creek, or book a jeep tour into the backcountry. The concierge can also arrange balloon flights, vineyard visits in the Verde Valley and day trips to the Grand Canyon, about two hours north.

Why Couples Keep Coming Back

Reviews return to the same handful of pleasures. First, the setting: guests love waking up to the sound of the creek and stepping out onto a deck under the trees, with the red rocks just visible through the branches. The spread-out cottage layout gives real privacy, while the fireplaces and outdoor showers make rooms feel like a cabin built for two.

Couples also rave about dinner at Cress, especially when seated close to the water. The friendly, attentive staff, who make anniversaries and honeymoons feel noticed, get plenty of praise too. Many mention the small rituals, from duck feeding to stargazing, as the moments that made their trip, along with the convenience of being minutes from town while feeling miles away.

Good to Know

  • L'Auberge welcomes children and dogs, though the cottage layout keeps things peaceful; ask for a creekside cottage away from the main lodge for the quietest stay.
  • Check your rate details for any daily service charge or fees so the total holds no surprises.
  • Cottage features vary by category, so confirm fireplace, outdoor shower and hot tub details when you book.
  • The creek keeps the property cooler than much of Sedona in summer, but spring and fall are still the sweet spots.
  • Reserve Cress and private creekside dinners in advance, especially on weekends and holidays.

Insider tips

  1. Request a Creekside Cottage or Suite and ask which ones have a deck hot tub.
  2. Book a private creekside dinner for your first or last night.
  3. Join the evening stargazing session, then light the fire in your cottage.
  4. Use the free ride into Uptown so you do not have to battle for parking.

FAQ

L'Auberge de Sedona questions, answered

What makes L'Auberge de Sedona different from other Sedona resorts?

Its setting along Oak Creek. While many Sedona resorts sit out in open desert, L'Auberge is shaded by tall sycamores beside running water, with the red rocks rising above the trees. The result feels more like a cabin retreat than a desert spa. Its central location means Uptown restaurants and galleries are minutes away rather than a long drive.

Which cottage should honeymooners book?

Creekside Cottages and Creekside Suites are the most romantic, with decks close to the water and, in most cases, fireplaces. Some cottages also have outdoor showers or deck hot tubs, so confirm the specific features with the resort when you book. If you prefer views of the red rocks over the creek, the redesigned rooms known as The Cliffs are a stylish alternative.

Is the restaurant worth it?

Yes. Cress on Oak Creek holds a AAA Four Diamond rating and is one of the most atmospheric dining rooms in Arizona, with tables beside the creek and a seasonal, locally sourced menu. Book well ahead and ask for a table close to the water. For a special night, the resort can also arrange a private creekside dinner for two.

Is L'Auberge de Sedona kid-free or pet-friendly?

It is not kid-free; children are welcome and cribs are available. It is also dog-friendly, with a dedicated creekside area for pets. In practice, the spread-out cottage layout means most couples find it peaceful, particularly midweek and outside school holidays. If you want an exclusively adult crowd, ask the resort which cottages tend to be the most secluded.

How do we get there and do we need a car?

Flagstaff Pulliam Airport (FLG) is about 45 minutes away. Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX), with far more flight options, is about two hours by car. A rental car is useful for trailheads, wineries and Grand Canyon day trips. Once you are in Sedona, though, the resort's free shuttle to Uptown means you can enjoy a cocktail at dinner without worrying about driving.
