Silky Oaks Lodge is the honeymoon choice for couples who want the rainforest rather than the beach. It is a lodge of 40 treehouse-style suites on the Mossman River, on land bordering Daintree National Park, about half an hour north of Port Douglas. Suites stand on stilts among the trees. Many have open-air bathtubs and hammocks on the deck.
The tariff is generous. It covers a tropical breakfast, evening drinks and snacks, a four-course dinner with matched wines and a selected in-suite bar. Morning yoga, exclusive access to the Figtree Rapids trail and one daily shuttle to Port Douglas are included too. Spa treatments and tours cost extra.
Silky Oaks suits couples who like nature, good food and a slower pace: swimming in a river, walking with Kuku Yalanji guides, a massage with rainforest views. It is part of the Beckons group, alongside Capella Lodge and Longitude 131°. It suits less well if you want a beach on your doorstep or nightlife, though Port Douglas is close enough for both. Children aged ten and over are welcome.

Why Couples Love Silky Oaks
It feels remote without being hard to reach. You fall asleep to the river and wake to birdsong, yet Port Douglas's restaurants and the reef boats are half an hour away.
The river is the lodge's playground. Guests swim in the billabong, float in the rapids and walk the trails to picnic and swimming spots that only lodge guests can reach. Couples who like to stay busy can join drift snorkeling or guided walks, while those who would rather do nothing have a hammock and an outdoor tub.
The Daintree is the oldest surviving tropical rainforest on Earth and a World Heritage site. Silky Oaks gives you a comfortable front door to it, with First Nations guides who can explain what you are looking at. That combination of comfort and culture is what makes it stand out.
Suites to Book
All suites have a king bed. The choice comes down to outlook and outdoor bathing.
- Treehouse Retreats, about 50 square meters, have a balcony with a hammock and a private deck with a bathtub and open-air shower. This is the best value romantic choice.
- Riverhouses, about 47 square meters, overlook the river and have a private outdoor bathtub. Book one if hearing the water matters most.
- Billabong Suites, about 92 square meters, add indoor and outdoor living areas, a deck with a fireplace and an open-air tub. They are the honeymoon splurge.
- Rainforest Retreats, about 42 square meters, are the entry level, with a deep spa bath inside and a hammock on the deck.
Treehouse Premium suites add space and extra bedding. The two-bedroom Daintree Pavilion, with its own infinity pool, is built for groups or a very large budget.
Food, Drink and the Healing Waters Spa
Dinner is the evening ritual. The open-sided Treehouse Restaurant sits beside the Mossman River. Executive Chef Mathew Fury cooks a contemporary Australian menu built on Tropical North Queensland produce. Expect Asian-leaning flavors at dinner and rainforest ingredients such as finger lime and pandan from the lodge's kitchen garden, which grows more than 100 varieties. Four courses with matched wines are included.
Sunset drinks are served in the lounge or at Jungle Perch, an open-air bar in the canopy. The Silky Bar pours Australian wines, local beers and small-batch spirits for a nightcap.
The Healing Waters Spa has six treatment rooms with river or rainforest views, including a couples room and a Vichy shower. It is worth booking one long treatment early in your stay.
Why guests fall for it
Things to Do
Start with the rainforest. Guided walks with Kuku Yalanji guides share the stories and bush foods of the Daintree. Mossman Gorge is close by. The Ngadiku Dreamtime Walk there is a good introduction. Further north, Cape Tribulation is where the rainforest meets the reef.
Then the reef. Full-day trips from Port Douglas run to the outer Great Barrier Reef for snorkeling and diving. The lodge's Rainforest to Reef package bundles a Sailaway reef cruise with the Mossman Gorge walk.
At the lodge, morning yoga is included. The Figtree Rapids trail, open only to guests, leads to swimming holes. Helicopter flights over the reef can be arranged. Ask for a guided walk at dusk, when the forest is most active.
Getting There and Practical Notes
Cairns Airport (CNS) is about 80 minutes away by road. The lodge can arrange private transfers through a preferred operator at extra cost, or a scenic helicopter flight straight to its helipad. A daily shuttle to Port Douglas is included in the rate.
Dress is relaxed: resort clothes by day and smart casual in the evening. Bring solid walking shoes, a hat and sunscreen. The dry season, roughly April to November, brings warm days and cooler nights. The green season, December to March, is hotter with frequent rain.
Queensland's tropics have mosquitoes, so pack repellent. Dengue appears occasionally in the region; if you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices. Swim only where the lodge says it is safe, since saltwater crocodiles live in the region's rivers and estuaries. Marine stingers are present at the coast in the warmer months.
Is It Worth It?
Silky Oaks is not cheap, but the inclusions are strong. Breakfast, a four-course dinner with matched wines, evening drinks and an in-suite bar cover most of your daily spending. Rates sit in the luxury range and vary by suite and season, so ask the lodge or a specialist for current pricing and watch for packages that add a free night or lodge credit.
Book a Treehouse Retreat or a Billabong Suite for the outdoor bath. Stay at least three nights. Many couples pair two or three nights here with a few in Port Douglas or on the reef.
Choose elsewhere if a beach is essential. Thala Beach Nature Reserve has its own beach and costs less. Couples who want reef seclusion with everything included should look at Lizard Island Resort.
