Tsala Treetop Lodge is the Garden Route's best-known honeymoon treehouse: ten private suites raised into the canopy of an old indigenous forest, each with its own deck and infinity pool facing the trees. It sits just off the N2 about 10 kilometers west of Plettenberg Bay, so the beaches of Plett and the Knysna lagoon are both a short drive away.
The lodge belongs to Hunter Hotels, the group behind Hunter's Country House and Gorah Elephant Camp in Addo. Guests can eat in the Tsala dining room, in their suite or at Zinzi, the group's well-regarded restaurant close by.
It suits couples who want a romantic, design-led base for a road trip, with forest walks by day and a fire in the suite at night. The suites have under-floor heating and fireplaces, which makes it appealing in the cooler months too. Children must be 12 or older, so the mood is grown-up. The tradeoffs: it is a forest setting rather than a beach hotel and you will need a car to explore. For a treehouse with a pool, the rates are fair by South African luxury standards.

Why Couples Love Tsala
The feeling of living in the trees is what couples remember. You walk from the stone entrance into the forest and up to suites set high above the ground, surrounded by leaves and birdsong. From your deck you look into the canopy rather than at other guests.
The interiors lean warm and dramatic, with what the lodge calls afro-baroque decor: earthy colors, rich textures and handcrafted fittings. At night, with the fireplace going and the forest dark outside, it feels very far from the highway that runs a short distance away.
The position also works for a road trip. You are close enough to Plettenberg Bay for beach days and the Robberg Peninsula and within half an hour of Knysna. Many couples spend three nights here as the centerpiece of a Garden Route drive, then continue east to a safari in the Eastern Cape.
Treetop Suites and Villas
There are two types of accommodation.
- Treetop Suites: ten suites tucked into the forest canopy, each with a private deck and its own infinity pool reaching out toward the trees. Under-floor heating and a fireplace keep them cozy in winter. These are the honeymoon choice.
- Treetop Villas: six two-bedroom villas built high above the forest floor, each with a large lounge with a fireplace, a forest-facing deck and an infinity pool. They suit couples traveling with friends or family.
Rates for the suites are quoted per suite, not per person, which makes the pricing easy to understand. Ask for a suite with the most secluded outlook when you book and mention that you are on honeymoon; small touches in the room are common at lodges like this. You walk to your suite through the grounds, so pack shoes you can walk in after dark.
Food, Drink and Evenings In
Dining is one of Tsala's strengths. You have three main options: the Tsala dining room, in-suite dining and Zinzi Restaurant, which the lodge says ranks among South Africa's top 100 restaurants. Hunter Hotels also runs Sage Dining and The Conservatory at Hunter's Country House nearby.
A good plan is to try Zinzi on your first night, eat in the lodge dining room on the second and order in-suite dinner on the third, with a bottle of Cape wine by the fire. The wine list draws on the Western Cape and the head chef's menus use local produce.
The lodge does not position itself as a spa resort, so if massages are a big part of your plans, ask what treatments can be arranged when you book. Most couples are happy with the private pool, the deck and a long lunch in Plett.
Why guests fall for it
Things to Do Nearby
Tsala sits at the center of the Garden Route's best outings. The Robberg Peninsula Nature Reserve, just beyond Plettenberg Bay, has cliff-top trails past seal colonies and beaches; allow two to four hours depending on the loop. Plett's main beaches are a 15-minute drive.
From July to November, southern right whales gather in the bay and boat-based whale and dolphin trips run from Plett. Knysna, about 25 minutes west, has lagoon cruises, oysters and the views from the Knysna Heads.
Farther east, Tsitsikamma National Park and the Storms River Mouth suspension bridge make a full day trip. The forests around the lodge also have walking trails. Bring sunscreen and layers: the weather changes quickly along this coast and the ocean is cooler than you might expect, with rip currents on open beaches. Swim where lifeguards are on duty.
Getting There
Most couples drive. Tsala is just off the N2 about 10 kilometers west of Plettenberg Bay, roughly a six-hour drive from Cape Town without stops, though most people take several days along the Garden Route.
The nearest commercial airport is George (GRJ), about 75 minutes away by car, with flights from Cape Town and Johannesburg. Rent a car at George if you plan to explore; you will want it for beaches, hikes and restaurants. If you are continuing to an Eastern Cape safari, Gqeberha's airport (PLZ) is about three hours east.
Drive in daylight where you can. The N2 is the main road along this coast and can be busy with trucks and animals sometimes wander onto smaller roads at night. Plan two to four nights at Tsala depending on how much of the coast you want to see from one base.
Is It Worth It?
For a romantic Garden Route stop, yes. Approximate rates for a Treetop Suite run from about $1,000 a night for two in the cooler months (about R17,800 per suite) to roughly $1,200 to $1,400 in high season, depending on the exchange rate. That buys a private infinity pool in the forest, a fireplace and access to some of the best food on the route.
It is not the right base for couples who want to walk to the beach or have a big spa. In that case The Plettenberg, on a headland above the bay, puts you closer to the sea. Couples on a tighter budget will find good guesthouses in Wilderness and Knysna for far less.
But few places in South Africa offer this treehouse feeling with this level of comfort. Book at least three nights to enjoy it properly.
