There are private-island resorts and then there is Cayo Espanto, where the island is so small and the villas so few that the place feels less like a hotel than a borrowed estate. Seven villas share a speck of sand and palms a few miles off Ambergris Caye, each with its own dock and almost all with a plunge pool facing the Caribbean. No lobby, no crowds, no schedule.
For American honeymooners, the appeal is partly practical. Belize City is less than two hours from Miami or Houston and English is the official language. You can be floating in your plunge pool on the same afternoon you left home. But the deeper draw is the way the island is run. Before you arrive, the kitchen learns what you love to eat. Once you're there, a dedicated houseman looks after your villa and meals simply appear. Cayo Espanto has collected awards for romance and service for more than two decades, from Andrew Harper to Condé Nast Johansens. It remains one of the most coveted honeymoon addresses in Central America.

- Menus tailored to your tastes, all meals included
- Spa treatments in your villa
- Seven minutes by boat from San Pedro
Where You'll Be
Cayo Espanto sits about 3 miles from San Pedro, the lively little town on Ambergris Caye. It's just seven minutes away by boat. The waters around the island are shallow, clear and calm, a gradient of turquoise that stretches toward Belize's barrier reef, one of the largest in the world.
The island is close enough to civilization that a sunset dinner in town or a snorkel trip to Hol Chan is easy, yet far enough that from your deck you see only water, sky and the occasional pelican. Many of the country's best dive and snorkel sites are within 15 to 20 minutes by boat. The flats nearby are well known among anglers.
The Villas
Each of the seven villas is a world of its own, with a private dock, a veranda and the sea at the door.
- One-bedroom beachfront villas: Casa Olita, Casa Manana, Casa Brisa and Casa Solana each run from about 1,200 to more than 1,500 square feet, with a private plunge pool. Olita adds a walled garden and alfresco showers, while Solana has an infinity-edge plunge pool.
- Two-bedroom villas: Casa Estrella (a two-story villa of about 2,600 square feet) and Casa Aurora, with a large pool and personal decks.
- Casa Ventanas: An overwater bungalow of about 1,100 square feet at the end of its own dock, surrounded by the Caribbean on every side.
For honeymooners, Casa Ventanas is the romantic showstopper, while the one-bedroom beachfront villas offer more space and a pool of your own.
Menus Written for Two
There is no set menu at Cayo Espanto. The kitchen tailors each meal to your preferences. Three meals a day plus your favorite snacks are included, served in your villa or wherever you'd like on the island.
The executive chef, a Belize native, works with local ingredients and is known for her pastries, seasonal lobster and hand-rolled sushi, while the chef de cuisine weaves Belizean flavors into global dishes. Guests particularly love the catch-and-cook experience: head out with a guide, reel in your dinner and have it prepared that night. The resort's restaurant has been named Belize's Best Hotel Restaurant by the World Culinary Awards several times. Rack bar drinks, beer, soft drinks and juice are included; wine and Champagne come from a separate list.
Why guests fall for it
Spa in Your Villa
Rather than a separate spa building, Cayo Espanto brings treatments to you. An on-site therapist offers massages, facials, scrubs, wraps, manicures, pedicures and aromatherapy in the privacy of your villa, with the sound of the sea close by.
It's an especially lovely arrangement for couples, who can book side-by-side massages without leaving home base. Treatments can be reserved in advance by email. Consider scheduling one for your first afternoon, right after travel, plus another before you leave.
Reef, Flats and Mayan Temples
Kayaks and a sailboat are included for easy exploring. For more, the resort arranges private charters: snorkeling with a guide at Hol Chan Marine Reserve, scuba trips along the reef and a full-day private excursion to dive the famous Great Blue Hole.
Anglers can wade for bonefish right off the island, with your houseman helping to spot them, or hire a guide and boat in pursuit of tarpon and permit. A day at sea combines snorkeling, fishing for your lunch and a beach meal. If you'd like to see the mainland, the resort organizes daily excursions to Mayan sites such as Altun Ha, Lamanai, Xunantunich and Caracol, plus bird-watching and river trips. Most charters and tours are priced separately.
Why Guests Fall in Love
Guests consistently describe service so attentive that it feels as if they had the island to themselves. Staff anticipate needs before they're voiced, remember small preferences and make celebrations feel deeply personal, which is why so many reviews come from honeymooners and anniversary couples.
The food is another constant source of praise, especially beach picnics and candlelit dinners by the water. Couples also rave about the outdoor showers, the comfortable beds, the starry skies and the sunsets. Many say they started planning their return before they even left. It's a level of loyalty few resorts inspire.
Good to Know
Rates are per villa per night and include butler service, meals, snacks, house drinks, non-motorized activities and a daily scheduled boat to and from San Pedro. Wine and Champagne, motorized excursions and charters are extra. A Belize government tax and a resort fee are added to the rate, so check the current percentages when you budget.
There's a four-night minimum most of the year, with longer minimums over the December holidays. Getting there is straightforward: fly nonstop to Belize City and connect on a 17-minute domestic flight to San Pedro. The resort meets you for the short boat ride. A private helicopter is available if you'd like to land on the island itself. Hurricane season runs June through November, with the highest risk from about August to October, so travel insurance is wise if you book then.
Insider tips
- Book Casa Ventanas for the overwater experience, or Casa Solana for its infinity-edge plunge pool.
- Send in your food preferences before arrival so the chefs can plan around you.
- Plan your Blue Hole dive as a private charter early in the stay, when weather allows flexibility.
- Avoid the Christmas and New Year period unless you can commit to a longer minimum stay.
