Good to know: Now part of Marriott as North Island, a Luxury Collection Resort.

There is a moment on the helicopter ride from Mahé when North Island comes into view: a knot of granite and green ringed by white sand, with not a single road, high-rise or crowd in sight. That is the whole idea. The island covers only about two square kilometers and has just 11 villas. On most days you will see more tortoises than people.

North Island has long been one of the most coveted honeymoon addresses on Earth. Prince William and Catherine spent their honeymoon here. The appeal is easy to understand. Each villa is enormous, built by hand from local stone, driftwood-toned timber and thatch, with its own pool and a path straight onto the sand. There are no set menus and no fixed schedules; the team simply asks what you feel like and makes it happen, whether that is lobster on a deserted beach or a lazy day that never leaves your villa. What makes the experience unusual among ultra-luxury retreats is the story underneath it. This was once an overgrown, abandoned plantation. The resort was conceived as a way to bring it back to life.

Highlights at a glance

  • Only 11 villas on a 2-square-kilometer private island
  • Beachfront villas of roughly 450 square meters, each with a pool
  • Personalized dining with no set menus
  • Four beaches, including Honeymoon Cove
  • Turtle nesting and giant tortoises on a restored island
  • Royal honeymoon pedigree

An Island Brought Back to Life

For more than a century, North Island was worked as a plantation for copra, spices and guano. When farming ended, it was left to feral animals and invasive weeds. Restoration started in the 1980s. After the island was bought in the late 1990s, the owners launched an ambitious rehabilitation project, often described as a Noah's Ark effort, to clear invasive species and reintroduce native plants and wildlife. The resort opened in 2003 and today operates as part of Marriott's Luxury Collection.

The result is a living landscape. Giant tortoises roam the grounds and native forest is reclaiming the hills. In season, green and hawksbill turtles haul themselves up the beaches to nest. Granite boulders frame the coves. The highest point rises to roughly 180 meters and gives walkers clear views back toward Silhouette Island. You are guests in a sanctuary. That purpose quietly shapes everything here.

The Villas

Ten beachfront villas line East Beach, each about 450 square meters, which is nearly 5,000 square feet of indoor-outdoor space for two. Designed with a distinctly African-lodge sensibility, they feel handcrafted rather than manufactured: thatched roofs, hand-carved furniture, sunken baths, sliding walls that open to the sea breeze and a private plunge pool on a deck that runs down to the sand. Each villa is screened from its neighbors by vegetation, so you rarely glimpse another guest.

The eleventh, Villa North Island, is the island's most private retreat at around 750 square meters, tucked among coconut groves and reached across a small bridge. It is the obvious choice for couples who want to celebrate in the most extravagant way possible.

Every villa comes with a dedicated host or butler, plus bicycles and a buggy so you can explore the island at your own pace.

Dining Without a Menu

Forget restaurant reservations. At North Island, the culinary team plans meals around what you like, using island-grown produce, freshly caught fish and a deep wine cellar. The main gathering spot is The Piazza on East Beach. There is also a Sunset Bar for an evening drink as the sky goes gold over the ocean.

The best meals, though, happen away from the main area. Breakfast might appear on your villa deck and lunch in the shade of a boulder on a beach you have claimed for the day. Dinner could be by lantern light on the sand, with a menu you discussed with the chef that morning. Themed evenings, chef's tables and surprise setups are part of the rhythm. Ask and the team will try to make it happen, whether that is a Creole curry, a favorite Champagne or a picnic packed for a hike up the hill.

Why guests fall for it

A genuine castaway feeling, often seeing no one else all day
Huge, handcrafted villas with sunken baths and decks onto the sand
Intuitive, deeply personal hosts who remember every preference
Freedom to eat anything, anywhere, from beach picnics to chef's tables
The conservation story and close encounters with tortoises and turtles

Spa in the Treetops

The spa sits high on the hillside, surrounded by trees, with stone treatment rooms that look out over the canopy toward the sea. Treatments draw heavily on botanicals grown on the island. Couples' rituals, such as a long scrub followed by a massage, are the obvious honeymoon booking. If you would rather not leave your villa, therapists can come to you instead.

There is also a gym in the trees, yoga sessions and a long main pool near The Piazza for laps or lounging. Honestly, though, most of the wellness here is ambient: sleeping with the sound of surf, swimming before breakfast and walking barefoot from bed to beach.

Turtles, Tortoises and Granite Reefs

With only a handful of villas sharing the island, North Island's four beaches often feel entirely private. One of them is the aptly named Honeymoon Cove. You can ask to have a beach to yourselves for the day.

The island's waters are just as compelling. Granite drop-offs and reefs sit close to shore, so snorkeling and diving are excellent. The boathouse runs fishing trips, kayaking and sunset cruises. On land, follow guided walks through the restored forest, cycle the sandy tracks, or spend time with the environmental team learning about the island's restoration. In nesting season you may be able to watch turtles laying eggs or hatchlings scrambling to the sea, an experience many couples call the highlight of their trip. Guests can even plant a native tree, a small and lasting souvenir of your honeymoon.

What Guests Remember Most

Ask returning guests about North Island and they rarely start with thread counts. They talk about the feeling of being castaways in the most comfortable sense, of going a whole day without seeing another couple. The sheer scale and craftsmanship of the villas comes up again and again, along with the sunken baths and decks that roll down onto the beach.

Service is the other constant. Reviewers describe hosts who remember your favorite wine after one mention, small surprises appearing in the villa and a team that seems to anticipate needs before you voice them. The food earns similar praise, especially the freedom to eat whatever you like, wherever you like. Many couples also come home talking about the conservation story, from tortoises wandering past to nesting turtles, which gives all the pampering some meaning.

Practicalities

North Island sits at the very top of the price scale. Published coverage has put starting rates well into the thousands of dollars per night before taxes. What is included depends on the rate you choose: some rates are room-only while packages can add full board, drinks and activities. Helicopter transfers, most spa treatments and specialist excursions such as full-day fishing are typically extra, so ask for a detailed quote.

The helicopter ride from Mahé takes about 15 minutes. Luggage allowances on small helicopters can be strict, so pack soft bags and travel light. The island welcomes children, but with only 11 villas spread far apart, it remains deeply romantic. Turtle nesting is seasonal, so if seeing hatchlings matters to you, ask the reservations team which months offer the best chance. Seas are usually calmest, with the clearest water for snorkeling, in the transition months of April to May and October to November.

Insider tips

  1. Ask to claim a beach for the day; Honeymoon Cove is the romantic classic.
  2. Plan your villa dinners in the morning with the chef so they can source specific fish or ingredients.
  3. Pack in soft-sided luggage for the helicopter and confirm weight limits ahead of time.
  4. If you want to see turtle hatchlings, ask which months fall within nesting season before choosing your dates.

FAQ

North Island questions, answered

How do we get to North Island?

Fly into Seychelles International Airport on Mahé, usually via a Gulf or African hub from the US. From there, the resort arranges a helicopter transfer of about 15 minutes, landing on the island. Helicopters carry limited luggage, so soft bags are best. Transfers are typically charged separately, so include them in your quote when you book.

Is North Island all-inclusive?

Not automatically. Rates vary: some are room-only while packages can include full board, drinks and selected activities. Helicopter transfers, most spa treatments and certain excursions are usually extra. Because the island is so remote and dining is personalized, most honeymooners find an inclusive package simpler. Ask for a written breakdown of inclusions before you commit.

Did Prince William and Kate really honeymoon here?

Yes. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, now the Prince and Princess of Wales, chose North Island for their honeymoon in 2011. That history adds to the island's mystique, but the real draw is the same for everyone: total privacy, enormous villas and service that bends around your wishes.

Can we see sea turtles at North Island?

Green and hawksbill turtles nest on the island's beaches, where the resort's environmental team monitors the nests. If you visit during nesting or hatching season, you may be invited to watch, always following conservation guidelines. Giant tortoises live on the island year-round. You can also snorkel and dive nearby reefs where turtles are often spotted.

Which villa is best for a honeymoon?

Every beachfront villa works beautifully for two, with its own pool, sunken bath and deck onto East Beach. If budget allows, Villa North Island is the most secluded and spacious, set among coconut palms with even more privacy. Since all villas are similar in standard, many couples simply choose dates first and take whichever beachfront villa is free.
