The short answer

Caye Caulker is the easygoing, good-value island in Belize: sand streets, no cars and the barrier reef about a mile offshore. Visit December through April for sunshine and the clearest water. It suits relaxed couples who want daily snorkeling more than room service. Rooms, meals and tours cost less than on Ambergris Caye, with boutique hotels but no big luxury resorts. Two or three nights fits well on a longer Belize trip. Don't miss snorkeling with nurse sharks and stingrays at Shark Ray Alley.

Best for
  • Snorkelers on a sensible budget
  • Couples who love barefoot island life
  • Pairs combining reef and jungle
Maybe skip it if
  • You want broad sandy beaches
  • You expect luxury resort service

Caye Caulker is a five-mile island of sand streets, painted clapboard houses and docks reaching out into shallow turquoise water. There are no cars, just bicycles, a few golf carts and a lot of bare feet. Signs around the island remind you to Go Slow. Within a day most visitors obey without trying.

The barrier reef runs about a mile offshore, close enough that you can see waves breaking on it from the island. That proximity makes Caye Caulker one of the easiest places in Belize to spend days in the water. Snorkel boats leave every morning for coral gardens, nurse sharks, rays and manatees. In the evening, the whole island seems to gather on the western docks to watch the sunset.

The island has a backpacker reputation. It is more casual than Ambergris Caye next door. But it has grown up a little, with boutique hotels and good seafood restaurants. For a couple who want a relaxed, low-cost honeymoon with lots of snorkeling and very little fuss, it is an easy fit. It also makes a fun two-or-three-night stop on a longer Belize trip.

Why Honeymoon on Caye Caulker

This is Belize at its most laid back. The island is small enough to walk end to end in under an hour. There is nothing to schedule beyond a morning snorkel trip and a sunset drink, which leaves plenty of time for hammocks.

The reef is right there. Snorkeling trips are short, inexpensive compared to many Caribbean islands and full of marine life. Nurse sharks and southern stingrays at Shark Ray Alley are a highlight for many couples.

It is also good value. Rooms, meals and tours cost less here than on Ambergris Caye or the mainland resorts. That can stretch a honeymoon budget into more days.

The atmosphere is friendly. Locals greet you on the street, restaurant owners remember your order and the music from beach bars drifts across the island in the evening. It feels like a place, not a resort.

When to Go

The dry season from roughly December through April offers the most sunshine, calmer seas and the best snorkeling visibility. It is also high season, with higher rates and fuller hotels, particularly around Christmas and Easter.

The rainy season runs from about June through November. Showers are often short, but some days bring heavy rain and wind. The Atlantic hurricane season overlaps this period, with the highest risk from August through October. Many businesses close for a few weeks in September or October.

May and November can be good shoulder months, with fewer visitors and decent weather.

Lobster season opens in mid-June. The island celebrates with a lobster festival with food stalls and music. It runs until mid-February, so grilled lobster is on menus for most of the year.

Where to Stay

Most hotels sit along Front Street on the eastern side, facing the reef, or near the Split at the northern end of the village. The western side, facing the lagoon and the sunset, is quieter.

Accommodation ranges from simple guesthouses to boutique hotels with pools and rooftop decks. Look for places with private docks, sea-view balconies or rooftop terraces, which make the most of the island's light. Iguana Reef Inn, on the western side near the sunset docks, is a popular choice with a pool and lagoon views.

The southern end of the island is more residential and quiet, with vacation rentals and a few small hotels. It is a short bike ride from the village.

For honeymooners who want more polish, combining a few nights on Caye Caulker with a stay at a resort on Ambergris Caye is a popular approach.

Romantic Things to Do

Book a full-day snorkel trip to Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley. Swim over coral gardens, then slip into the water with nurse sharks and stingrays. Many trips also stop at the local reef in the Caye Caulker Marine Reserve.

Visit the manatee sanctuary near Swallow Caye on a separate boat trip. Swimming with the manatees is not allowed, but you can watch them surface beside the boat.

At the Split, a channel at the north end of the village, swim in the deep water and lounge on the platforms. It is the island's main swimming spot and a lively place for sunset. The current can run strongly and boats pass through, so stay near the platforms.

For a quieter romantic evening, pick up grilled lobster and a bottle of wine and take it to an empty dock on the west side for sunset, just the two of you.

Divers can join a trip to the Great Blue Hole, a long boat ride away. Scenic flights over it are another option.

Rent bicycles and ride to the quiet southern end for a picnic.

Getting There and Around

Fly into Belize City (BZE), which has nonstop flights from several US hubs, including Atlanta, Dallas, Houston and Miami. From the international airport, local airlines fly small planes to Caye Caulker in about 15 minutes.

Alternatively, take a taxi from the airport to the water taxi terminal in Belize City, about 20 to 30 minutes away. Water taxis run several times a day to Caye Caulker and take about 45 minutes. Boats also connect Caye Caulker with San Pedro on Ambergris Caye, making it easy to visit both.

On the island, you will walk or bicycle. Golf carts are available as taxis for luggage and longer trips. Streets are sand, so pack sandals rather than heels.

If you take the water taxi, sit near the back for a smoother ride and keep valuables in a dry bag.

Food and Drink

Seafood is the star. Grilled lobster in season, ceviche, whole snapper and conch fritters are on nearly every menu. Several grills along Front Street cook fish and lobster over open flames in the evening.

For breakfast, try fry jacks, the Belizean fried dough served with eggs, beans and honey. Rice and beans with stew chicken is the everyday lunch.

The island has a growing number of small restaurants and cafes, including coffee shops, juice bars and places serving international dishes. Many are casual and open-air, with sandy floors.

Belikin is the national beer. Rum punch is the default cocktail. Happy hours are common at bars near the Split.

Carry cash for smaller restaurants and street vendors. ATMs exist on the island but can run out of cash on busy weekends.

Honeymoon Tips

Bring enough cash. Belize dollars and US dollars are both widely accepted, at a fixed rate of two to one. Card acceptance is improving but is not universal.

Pack light. You will walk on sand. Many hotels have no elevators.

Check snorkel gear and boat safety before you set out. Choose established operators with good reviews.

Do not touch or feed marine life. Rules in the marine reserves protect corals and animals.

Apply insect repellent at dusk. Sandflies can bite near the water on calm evenings.

Crime in Belize is concentrated in parts of Belize City, not on the caye. Caye Caulker is relaxed, but use ordinary precautions: lock your room, keep phones out of sight late at night and walk home in pairs along lit streets.

Mosquitoes can carry dengue and Zika here. If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices for Belize before you book.

Combine the island with Cayo District inland for a jungle and ruins contrast.

FAQ

Caye Caulker honeymoon FAQ

Is Caye Caulker good for a honeymoon?

Yes, for couples who prefer a casual, budget-friendly island with excellent snorkeling. It has boutique hotels but no large luxury resorts. If you want high-end service, consider splitting your stay with Ambergris Caye or a private island lodge. Caye Caulker shines for relaxed days on the water.

Does Caye Caulker have beaches?

The island has narrow strips of sand rather than broad beaches. Seagrass grows in the shallows. Most swimming happens off docks or at the Split, a channel with deeper water at the northern end of the village. For long sandy beaches, Placencia on the mainland is a better option.

How do we get from Belize City to Caye Caulker?

Take a short flight of about 15 minutes from the international airport, or a taxi to the water taxi terminal in Belize City followed by a boat ride of about 45 minutes. Water taxis run several times a day. Boats also link Caye Caulker with San Pedro on Ambergris Caye.

Can we dive the Great Blue Hole from Caye Caulker?

Yes. Dive shops on the island run trips to the Blue Hole, usually as a long day with additional dives at nearby reef sites. The deep dive is best suited to experienced divers. Some shops require advanced certification. Scenic flights are an option for non-divers.

Caye Caulker or Ambergris Caye?

Ambergris Caye is larger, with more resorts, restaurants and nightlife. Caye Caulker is smaller and less expensive, with a slower village feel. Many couples visit both, since the water taxi between them takes only about half an hour. Choose Caye Caulker for relaxation and value.
