Gangtey Lodge is the most romantic place to stay in Bhutan's Phobjikha Valley and one of the most memorable small lodges in the Himalaya. It sits high above the valley near the 17th-century Gangtey Monastery, looking over farmhouses, blue pine forest and the wide marsh where black-necked cranes spend the winter.

The lodge is small and all-suite, built in a traditional Bhutanese farmhouse style with warm fabrics, earthy colors and handcrafted wood. The detail couples remember is the bath: each suite has a deep roll-top tub with views down the valley. The lounge has two large stone fireplaces and leather sofas, which become the place to gather after a day of walking.

Stays are full board or half board, with tea, coffee, drinks, Wi-Fi, laundry and guided experiences such as nature walks and meditation included. The cooking is modern Bhutanese. The lodge sits at about 10,000 feet, so it works best after two nights in Paro or Punakha. Gangtey Lodge suits couples who want quiet, nature and comfort in equal measure. Those who need a big spa or want to be close to cities should keep it to two nights or choose a lodge elsewhere.

Highlights at a glance

  • Roll-top baths with valley views
  • Small all-suite lodge near Gangtey Monastery
  • Black-necked cranes on the marsh from late October to mid-March
  • Full or half board with drinks included
  • Helicopter arrival from Paro in about 30 minutes

Why Couples Love Gangtey Lodge

The view is the reason. From the suites, the terrace and even the bath, you look straight down the Phobjikha Valley, a broad glacial bowl of marsh and farmland surrounded by forest. In the early morning, mist lies on the valley floor and the monastery bells carry up the slope.

The second reason is the cranes. From late October to mid-March, endangered black-necked cranes fly in from the Tibetan Plateau and roost on the marsh. Watching them glide in at dusk is one of the most moving sights in Bhutan.

The third is the scale. With very few rooms, the lodge feels personal. Staff learn your plans and preferences and evenings by the fire have the feel of a country house. For a honeymoon, it is a slow, intimate stop that balances the busier days in Paro and Thimphu.

Suites to Book

Gangtey Lodge is all-suite. Its Bhutanese Farmhouse Suites have warm textiles, earthen tones and traditional details, with a dressing room with double vanities, an ensuite shower and toilet and a deep roll-top bath set to look over the valley. Suites sleep up to three and there are no interconnecting rooms, which keeps the lodge quiet.

For a honeymoon, ask for the Honeymoon Suite when you book, or request a suite with the widest valley view. In crane season, a room facing the marsh is worth the effort, since you can watch the birds from your window.

Winter nights are cold, with temperatures near or below freezing. Suites are designed to stay cozy, but pack warm layers and thick socks. Free Wi-Fi is available in all rooms.

Food and Wellbeing

The lodge serves modern Bhutanese cooking, from red rice and buckwheat pancakes to ema datshi, the national dish of chilies and cheese, along with international options. Meals are served in an intimate dining room and breakfast on the terrace with the valley below is a highlight. Stays are full board or half board and tea, coffee and a range of drinks are included.

There is no large spa, but the lodge offers well-being experiences including meditation and nature walks and a traditional hot stone bath, in which river stones are heated in a fire and dropped into a wooden tub.

Evenings center on the lounge, with its two stone fireplaces and leather sofas. It is a good place for a quiet drink, a game of cards or planning the next day's walk.

Things to Do

Walk the Gangtey Nature Trail, a gentle route of a couple of hours through pine forest and farmland to Khewa Lhakhang. It is one of the loveliest easy walks in Bhutan. Gangtey Monastery, just above the lodge, is worth a visit, especially for morning prayers.

In crane season, visit the Black-Necked Crane Information Centre and watch the birds from the hides on the edge of the marsh. If your dates allow, the crane festival in the monastery courtyard each November celebrates their arrival with masked dances.

The lodge also offers longer hikes, mountain bikes, farm visits, archery, darts and cooking classes. Visiting a family farmhouse for butter tea is a simple, warm way to see rural life. The lodge's multi-day Escapes package these experiences into themed stays.

Getting There

Phobjikha is in central Bhutan. From Paro International Airport (PBH), the drive takes a little over four hours, though the lodge recommends allowing five, passing Thimphu, Dochula pass and Punakha. Most couples break the trip with nights in Paro and Punakha, which also helps with altitude.

For a faster arrival, Royal Bhutan Helicopters flies from Paro in about 30 minutes, landing at a helipad about ten minutes from the lodge.

All travel in Bhutan must be booked through a licensed tour operator, who provides your guide and driver. You can reserve rooms by emailing the lodge, which will connect you with a partner operator. Your operator's quote should include Bhutan's government charges as well as the lodge, so ask for an all-in price.

Is It Worth It?

Gangtey Lodge costs more than mid-range hotels in the valley, but it offers a level of comfort, food and setting that few places in rural Bhutan match. Full board, drinks and guided experiences are included, which helps the value.

It is not for every couple. The altitude, about 10,000 feet, can cause headaches or poor sleep on the first night, so spend two nights lower first, drink plenty of water and go easy on alcohol. The lodge does not stock altitude medication. Winter nights are freezing. Families with children over five are welcome, but the lodge is mostly visited by couples.

For couples who want to slow down and see a quieter Bhutan, it is a strong choice. Two nights is the right length for most itineraries.

How high is Gangtey Lodge?

The lodge sits at about 10,000 feet. To reduce the risk of altitude sickness, spend two nights in a lower valley first, drink plenty of water, limit alcohol and keep your first day light. The lodge does not stock altitude medication, so speak to your doctor before you travel.
