Why Honeymoon in Lençóis Maranhenses
There are few landscapes like it. Climbing a dune and seeing lagoon after lagoon spread out below you is the kind of moment couples talk about for years. The water is warm and clean. With a short walk you can find a lagoon of your own.
The experience is simple and physical: walking barefoot on soft sand, swimming, lying on a dune as the sun sets and the sand turns pink. There are no resorts inside the park, only nature.
Around it, small towns and villages give a taste of rural northeastern Brazil, with fishing boats, hammocks and grilled seafood. It suits couples who like adventure and are happy with comfortable but simple pousadas rather than luxury hotels.
When to Go
Timing is everything. The rainy season runs from about January to June, peaking from February to April. The lagoons fill during these months and are at their fullest from June to August, with July often the best.
September is still good, though lagoons start to shrink. From October to December, many lagoons in the most visited areas become shallow or dry up completely. The dunes remain beautiful, but the swimming is limited.
During the rainy months, roads can be muddy and some lagoons are still filling, so the experience is less reliable. Wind is strong from around August to December, which is why Atins becomes a kitesurfing hub. Days are hot all year, often in the high 80s or 90s.
Where to Stay
Barreirinhas is the main base, a riverside town on the Preguiças River. It has the most pousadas, restaurants and tour operators, plus easy access to the classic lagoon circuits at Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Bonita. It is practical and well organized.
Atins is a small fishing village at the mouth of the river, where the dunes meet the sea. Streets are sand, the pace is slow and many pousadas cater to kitesurfers and couples looking for quiet. It is the more romantic choice, with dunes right on the edge of the village.
Santo Amaro, on the western side of the park, is harder to reach but has some of the fullest and least crowded lagoons. Choose a pousada with air conditioning or good fans and a hammock on the porch.
Romantic Things to Do
Take a 4x4 tour from Barreirinhas to Lagoa Azul or Lagoa Bonita. At Lagoa Bonita, you climb a steep dune to see a sweep of lagoons. Afternoon tours stay for sunset.
From Atins, hike or ride into the dunes to Canto dos Atins, where simple restaurants serve grilled shrimp to hungry walkers. Swim in nearby lagoons with few other visitors.
Boat down the Preguiças River from Barreirinhas, stopping at Vassouras for small dunes and monkeys, the Mandacaru lighthouse for views and Caburé, a strip of sand between the river and the sea.
For a splurge, book a scenic flight over the dunes from Barreirinhas. From the air, you see the full pattern of lagoons and sand.
Atins is also a great place to learn kitesurfing in windy season.
Getting There and Around
Fly from the US to São Paulo, Brasília or another hub, then connect to São Luís (SLZ). There are no nonstops from the US. Barreirinhas is about four hours from São Luís by road, on a paved highway. Book a private transfer or shared van.
From Barreirinhas to Atins, you travel by 4x4 over sand tracks or by boat along the river, taking around an hour or more.
Inside the park, only licensed 4x4 vehicles from local operators are allowed. Rental cars must stay in town. Most visits combine short 4x4 drives with walking on the dunes. Tours are the easiest way to explore. Guides know which lagoons are fullest. São Luís itself has a colonial center with tiled facades, worth a night if you have time.
Food and Drink
Seafood dominates. Grilled shrimp, fried fish and crab are everywhere, often served with rice, beans, farofa and vinaigrette salad. In Atins and the dunes, simple shacks serve shrimp lunches that become a highlight of the trip.
Maranhão has its own drink, Guaraná Jesus, a pink, sweet soda that locals love. Try it once. Fresh fruit juices from cashew fruit, acerola and cupuaçu are excellent.
In São Luís, try arroz de cuxá, rice with a sauce of vinagreira leaves and dried shrimp. Restaurants in Barreirinhas and Atins are relaxed and casual. Caipirinhas and cold beer at sunset are a nightly ritual. Reservations are rarely needed outside the busiest weeks.
Honeymoon Tips
Bring sunscreen, sunglasses and hats for both of you. The white sand reflects the sun. There is no shade on the dunes. Carry water on every trip.
Walking on dunes is tiring. Pace yourselves and plan longer walks for early morning or late afternoon.
Mosquito-borne illnesses such as dengue occur in northeastern Brazil. Use repellent, especially at dusk. If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices.
Cash is useful in Atins and smaller villages. Card machines and connections can be unreliable.
Combine Lençóis Maranhenses with Jericoacoara to the east along the coast for beaches and sunsets, or with Rio or Salvador for city life. Three or four nights is enough for most couples.
