Go April–May or September–November for calm beaches and fair prices. Plan three to five nights paired with Rio. Boutique stays range from moderate to upscale; prices are approximate and peak around New Year and Carnival.

  • Couples who like boutique hotels
  • Good food and light nightlife

  • You want total seclusion
  • You are traveling only at Carnival or New Year

Búzios, officially Armação dos Búzios, is a hilly peninsula on the coast east of Rio de Janeiro with more than 20 beaches tucked into its coves. Some face calm bays good for swimming and snorkeling; others face the open Atlantic and draw surfers. It was a quiet fishing village until the French actress Brigitte Bardot visited in the 1960s and made it famous. A bronze statue of her now sits on the waterfront promenade named in her honor.

Today Búzios is Brazil's polished beach getaway: boutique hotels on hillsides, schooner trips around the islands, seafood restaurants on the sand and a lively evening scene on the cobbled Rua das Pedras. It is about three hours by car from Rio, which makes it an easy pairing with a few nights in the city.

For a honeymoon, Búzios suits couples who want beaches with good food and a little nightlife, without the long flights to the northeast. Plan three to five nights. December through March is high summer and busy, while April, May and the spring months bring calmer beaches and lower prices.

Why Honeymoon in Búzios

Variety is the main appeal. You can spend the morning on a sheltered beach where the water is flat and green, take a schooner around the islands after lunch and finish with a candlelit dinner overlooking the bay. Each beach has its own character, so you never repeat a day.

The hotels are another reason. Búzios has many small, design-minded pousadas and boutique hotels with sea views, pools and spas. Service tends to be warm and personal.

It is also convenient. Paired with Rio, it gives you city energy and beach downtime in one trip, with only one transfer. Couples who find Rio overwhelming often love the slower, safer-feeling pace of the peninsula.

When to Go

December through March is summer: hot, sunny and lively, with the warmest water. Christmas, New Year and Carnival bring big crowds and high prices, so book early or avoid those weeks.

April and May are excellent months for couples. The weather is usually dry and warm, the water is still pleasant and the crowds drop. September through November is another good shoulder season, with mild temperatures and fewer visitors.

June through August is winter. Days are often sunny and in the 70s, but nights cool down and the water is colder. Wind can make some beaches choppy. Búzios is still pleasant then. Hotels are cheaper. Brief rain showers are possible at any time of year.

Where to Stay

Ferradura, a horseshoe-shaped bay on the south side, is calm and family-friendly by day but has some of the nicest boutique hotels on the surrounding hillsides. Insólito Boutique Hotel sits on the rocks above the bay with views across the water.

The town center, near Orla Bardot and Rua das Pedras, is best if you want to walk to restaurants and bars. Casas Brancas Boutique Hotel and Spa, set on a hill above the bay, is a classic romantic choice here.

Geribá, a long surf beach, has a younger, lively scene and many pousadas. João Fernandes is a sheltered cove with clear water and a cluster of hotels.

For quiet, look for hillside pousadas away from the center with ocean-view rooms and private terraces. Ask whether your hotel has its own beach access or shuttle.

Romantic Things to Do

Take a schooner trip around the peninsula. These boats stop at several beaches and islands for swimming and snorkeling. Choose a smaller boat or charter a private one for more space.

Snorkel at João Fernandes or Tartaruga, where calm water and rocks attract fish and sometimes sea turtles.

Walk the short trail to Azeda and Azedinha, two small coves below a hillside. Go early before the boats arrive.

Rent a stand-up paddleboard or kayak at Ferradura, where the bay is usually flat.

At sunset, head to the Porto da Barra area on Manguinhos, a pier of restaurants and bars facing west over the bay. After dinner, stroll the cobbled Rua das Pedras and Orla Bardot, where the boutiques stay open late.

Getting There and Around

Fly from the US to Rio de Janeiro Galeão (GIG), which has nonstop service from several US cities. From the airport, Búzios is about three hours by car. Most couples book a private transfer or shuttle. Cabo Frio, about 30 minutes away, has a smaller regional airport with limited domestic flights.

Buses run from Rio's main bus station to Búzios, taking around three hours.

On the peninsula, taxis, ride apps and water taxis are the easiest ways to move between beaches. Water taxis from the town center reach several coves quickly. Some couples rent a buggy for a day, though roads are hilly and busy in summer. Many beaches are walkable from the center if you do not mind hills.

Food and Drink

Seafood is the specialty. Look for grilled fish, shrimp and moqueca, a Brazilian stew of fish or seafood cooked in coconut milk and palm oil. Beach shacks serve fried fish, cold beer and caipirinhas.

Búzios has a strong restaurant scene for its size, with Italian, French and Argentine influences thanks to the international visitors who settled here. Dinner on the waterfront at sunset is a ritual.

Try açaí bowls for breakfast and fresh coconut water on the beach. Wine lists include Argentine and Chilean bottles, plus a growing selection of Brazilian wines. Reservations help in high season, especially for sunset tables. Dinner starts later than in the US, often after 8 p.m.

Honeymoon Tips

Wear sunscreen and reapply often. The sun is strong, even on cloudy days.

Some open-ocean beaches have strong currents. Swim only where locals swim and follow lifeguard flags.

Mosquito-borne illnesses such as dengue occur in Brazil. Use repellent, especially at dusk. If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices.

The State Department rates Brazil Level 2. Búzios feels relaxed, but keep phones and valuables discreet in crowds and on Rua das Pedras late at night.

Combine Búzios with Rio de Janeiro for a balanced trip. Three nights in each is a good split. Avoid traveling on Friday evenings in summer, when traffic from Rio is heavy.
