The Feel of Each Place
Bodrum is a peninsula of personalities. Göltürkbükü has wooden decks over the water and a glamorous summer scene. Gümüşlük is a protected fishing village known for sunsets. Yalıkavak centers on a marina with designer shops, while Bitez is relaxed and sandier. You can switch between quiet and lively days by changing bays.
Kaş is one town that still feels like a town. Fishermen still work the harbor, the Friday market sells olives, honey and cheese. A creative crowd of divers and artists has settled here over the years. Dinner can mean a harbor table or a candlelit courtyard in the old lanes, with no dress code.
Bodrum is glossier and more varied. Kaş is more intimate and more grounded. Couples who like to dress up for dinner usually lean toward Bodrum, while those who prefer sandals and a walk home along the harbor lean toward Kaş.
Hotels and How You Swim
Bodrum's north coast around Göltürkbükü is the luxury zone. The Mandarin Oriental, Bodrum sits above Cennet Koyu with terraced villas and its own beaches. Other peninsula addresses range from stone cottages with private pools in pine forest to long-running piers with a social scene. Gümüşlük has small boutique hotels. Bodrum town works if you want to walk to the castle and bars.
Kaş's best couples' hotels sit on the Çukurbağ peninsula, a short drive from the harbor, with sea-facing terraces and decks with ladders into the water. Casa Bi Hotel is one of the small cliff hotels in our listings. Kalkan, 30 minutes west, has villas with private pools, while Kaleköy at Kekova has guesthouses reached only by boat.
In both places, check how swimming works. Many Bodrum bays are pebbly or rocky with deck platforms. Most Kaş hotels have decks rather than beaches, so pack water shoes for either.
Days on the Water
Bodrum's signature day is aboard a gulet, a traditional wooden sailing boat, stopping at coves reachable only by sea. Many trips visit Kara Ada, an island with a warm spring cave where you can coat yourselves in mineral mud. Private charters make it more romantic. The meltemi wind can make some trips choppy in high summer, though the south coast tends to be calmer.
Kaş offers more active water. A guided sea kayak at Kekova takes you over the submerged foundations of an ancient Lycian city and past sarcophagi in the shallows, with lunch below the castle at Kaleköy. Swimming over the ruins is not allowed, but guides stop at nearby coves. Kaş is also one of Turkey's best dive centers, with walls, caves, amphora fields and a sunken aircraft. Kaputaş, a small sandy cove below the cliffs, is a short drive away.
For lounging on deck, Bodrum wins. For paddling, diving and exploring, Kaş does.
On Land and After Dark
In Bodrum, visit the Castle of St. Peter and its Museum of Underwater Archaeology, with ancient shipwrecks raised from the surrounding seabed. Walk the shallow causeway to Rabbit Island at Gümüşlük at sunset, then eat fish at the water's edge. Yalıkavak Marina is the place for sundowners. In summer Türkbükü's waterfront fills after 10 p.m. Ephesus is about two and a half hours by road for a day trip.
In Kaş, watch sunset from the Hellenistic Antiphellos theater at the edge of town, then walk to dinner. Short sections of the Lycian Way make good half-day hikes. Paragliding from the mountain behind town is popular. Patara, about 45 minutes west, has a long sandy beach backed by dunes and Lycian ruins.
Bodrum's evenings can be glamorous and late. Kaş has cocktail bars with harbor views that stay busy in summer, but its nights are mostly about long dinners in the old lanes.
When to Go
May, June and September are the best months for both, with warm seas, pleasant days and room at restaurants. Kaş stretches the season a little further, since October is often still ideal for swimming and hiking there.
July and August are peak season in both, but they feel different. Bodrum fills with Istanbul families and European visitors, beach clubs charge premium prices and evening roads to the bays clog. The meltemi wind tempers the heat. Kaş gets hot, often in the 90s. Hotels fill with families, so book well ahead.
Off-season is where they part ways. From November to March many Bodrum resorts and beach clubs close, though the town stays open. Kaş stays open year-round with a mild but rainy winter, which is unusual for the coast. April and November suit walking in Kaş, though the sea is cool. Diving in Kaş is good from spring to late fall.
Cost and Getting There
Bodrum is more expensive than the rest of coastal Turkey. Beach club day beds, cocktails and marina dining can rival Mykonos prices. In our listings the Mandarin Oriental, Bodrum starts around $750 a night, while Casa Bi Hotel in Kaş starts around $310, both approximate and higher in July and August. Kaş restaurants and boat trips generally cost less too.
Turkish Airlines flies nonstop to Istanbul from many US cities, about 10 hours from the East Coast. From Istanbul, Milas-Bodrum Airport (BJV) is about an hour's flight, then 40 minutes to an hour to most hotels.
Kaş takes longer. Fly from Istanbul to Dalaman (DLM), about 75 minutes, then drive two to two and a half hours along one of Turkey's most beautiful coast roads. Antalya (AYT) is about three hours east with more flights. Most hotels in both places arrange private transfers.
Doing Both, Plus a Greek Island
With ten days or more, you can split the coast: four nights in Bodrum, then a drive of roughly five hours east, or a fly-and-drive via Dalaman, for four or five nights in Kaş. Going east also lets you stop in Fethiye or Kalkan. Many couples start with Bodrum's resort comfort and finish with Kaş's slower rhythm.
With a week, pick one. Bodrum suits a lazier, more pampered stay. Kaş suits couples who want to be busy outdoors.
Both towns also offer an easy hop to Greece. Ferries run from Bodrum harbor to Kos, with a castle, Roman ruins and waterfront tavernas for a relaxed day. From Kaş, Kastellorizo is a 20 to 30 minute crossing. Most couples go for a long harbor lunch and a swim off the rocks. Bring your passports for both and check seasonal schedules before you go.
