The short answer

Mykonos works for a honeymoon if you choose your base well: a private-pool suite at Cavo Tagoo or Santa Marina, days in golden south coast coves and nightlife only when you want it. June and September are best, with warm sea and lower rates than July and August, when it's among the most expensive islands in Greece. Pair it with Santorini for the classic two-island trip, three or four nights each. Don't miss a morning boat to ancient Delos, then sunset in Little Venice.

Best for
  • Couples who want beaches and glamour
  • Pairs who enjoy a lively night out
  • Two-island Greece honeymooners
Maybe skip it if
  • You want a quiet, low-cost island
  • Crowds and big beach-club bills bother you

Mykonos has a reputation. It is only half the story. Yes, this is the Aegean's party island, with beach clubs where lunch turns into dancing and bars that hum until dawn. But it is also a place of genuine beauty: a sun-bleached Cycladic town of whitewashed lanes and blue shutters, a row of Venetian windmills above the sea, sheltered coves of golden sand and water so clear you can count the pebbles. And just two kilometers offshore lies Delos, one of the most sacred sites of the ancient world.

For honeymooners, Mykonos works beautifully when you choose your own rhythm. Base yourselves at a resort with a private pool or beach and spend your days on boats and in quiet coves. Dip into the island's legendary energy for sunset cocktails in Little Venice and late dinners in the Chora. Paired with Santorini's cliffs and calm, it makes the classic two-island Greek honeymoon.

Why Honeymoon in Mykonos

Mykonos offers something Santorini cannot: beaches. The island's south coast is lined with sandy coves, from family-friendly Ornos and chic Psarou to quieter spots in the north like Agios Sostis. Add some of the best restaurants in the Cyclades, a design-forward hotel scene and easy boat access to ancient Delos. The result is a destination that is as glamorous as it is relaxing.

Mykonos is wonderfully social if you want it to be. A beach club afternoon or a night out in town can be a fun counterpoint to quieter days. And because the airport sits just outside town, you can be poolside within an hour of landing, which matters at the end of a long journey.

When to Go

The season runs roughly from May to October, with many hotels and restaurants closed in winter. June and September are ideal for couples: warm sea, long days, full services and a buzz that is lively without feeling frantic. Late May and early October are calmer and offer better value, though some beach clubs keep shorter hours.

July and August are peak months, with the highest prices, the biggest crowds and the most intense nightlife. Summer also brings the meltemi, a strong northerly wind that cools the island and earned it the nickname the island of the winds. On windy days, the south coast beaches are usually more sheltered.

Where to Stay

Location shapes your Mykonos experience. Staying near town puts restaurants and nightlife at your fingertips; staying on the south coast puts the beach at your door.

Cavo Tagoo, on a cliff just north of the Chora, is the island's best-known design hotel, famous for its saltwater infinity pool and suites with private pools or hot tubs, plus Meraki and Zuma restaurants and a 24-hour shuttle into town. On Ornos Bay, Santa Marina, a Luxury Collection Resort, offers something rare on Mykonos, a private sandy cove, along with pool villas with butler service, a kid-free infinity pool, the Ginkgo Spa and Buddha-Bar Beach. Elsewhere, Psarou and Platys Gialos are home to polished beach hotels, while Agios Stefanos and the quieter north coast offer more seclusion. Boutique hotels in town suit couples who want to walk everywhere. Mykonos is among the most expensive islands in Greece in July and August; June and September rates are often noticeably lower.

Romantic Things to Do

Watch the sunset from Little Venice, where historic houses hang over the water and bars serve cocktails as waves splash below, then stroll to the Kato Mili windmills on the hill above. Spend a morning on Delos, the mythical birthplace of Apollo and Artemis, where temples, mosaics and the famous Terrace of the Lions spread across the island; boats run regularly from the Old Port.

Charter a private boat or join a small sailing trip along the south coast, swimming in coves you can only reach by sea. Explore the Chora's maze of lanes and photograph Panagia Paraportiani, one of the most photographed churches in Greece. For a slower afternoon, drive to Ano Mera, the island's traditional inland village, for lunch at a taverna in its square.

Getting There & Around

In summer, Mykonos Airport (JMK), about 4 kilometers from town, receives flights from Athens and many European cities; the hop from Athens takes around 25 minutes. Most US travelers connect in Athens or another European hub. Ferries and high-speed boats link Mykonos with Piraeus, Rafina and other Cyclades islands, including Santorini.

Taxis are limited, so arrange transfers through your hotel, especially on arrival. Buses connect town with the main beaches. In summer, sea taxis shuttle between south coast beaches. Many couples rent a car to explore, but parking near town is tight. For beach-hopping, a private boat day is the most romantic option.

Food & Drink

For a small island, Mykonos eats remarkably well. In town, everything from refined Greek tasting menus to international names fills the lanes, while seaside tavernas serve grilled fish, octopus and salads loaded with island tomatoes and local cheese. Look for kopanisti (a tangy, spicy cheese spread) and louza, a cured pork specialty of the island.

Sunset is the island's ritual: cocktails in Little Venice or at a hotel terrace, followed by a late dinner, since locals rarely sit down before 9 p.m. Lunch at a beach club is a classic experience. A long, lazy meal at a waterside taverna in Ornos or Agios Sostis may be your favorite memory. Book popular restaurants well in advance in high season.

Honeymoon Tips

  • Choose your vibe: stay near town for nightlife or on a beach for calm, then use a shuttle or taxi for the rest.
  • Book a suite with a private pool so you have a retreat when beaches get busy.
  • Visit Delos early in the day to avoid the heat; check its opening days in advance.
  • Reserve transfers, sunset tables and boat charters before you arrive in July and August.
  • Pair Mykonos with Santorini; ferries and short flights link the two.
  • At beach clubs, ask the price of sun beds, champagne and fish sold by weight before you order. Bills can climb fast.

FAQ

Mykonos honeymoon FAQ

Is Mykonos good for a honeymoon or just for partying?

It is excellent for honeymoons, as long as you choose the right base. Pick a resort with a private pool or beach, spend your days on boats and in quiet coves and save the nightlife for when you feel like it. The island's dining, sunsets and design-led hotels make it one of Greece's most romantic islands.

Should we choose Mykonos or Santorini?

Ideally both. Santorini delivers caldera views and cliff-top cave suites but has few sandy beaches; Mykonos offers golden beaches, boat days and a livelier social scene. Ferries and short flights connect them. Many couples spend three or four nights on each, starting with Santorini's calm and ending on Mykonos's beaches, or vice versa.

What is the best area to stay in Mykonos for couples?

For walkable nightlife and restaurants, stay in or near the Chora, for example at a cliffside hotel like Cavo Tagoo. For beach days, Ornos, Psarou and Platys Gialos on the south coast are ideal. Santa Marina offers its own private cove. For seclusion, look to Agios Stefanos and the quieter north coast.

How windy is Mykonos in summer?

In July and August, the meltemi, a strong seasonal northerly wind, can blow for days at a time. It keeps temperatures pleasant but can make north-facing beaches rough and some boat trips choppy. South coast beaches such as Ornos and Psarou are usually more sheltered. June and September tend to be calmer.

How do we get from Mykonos to Delos?

Boats to Delos leave regularly from the Old Port in Mykonos Town in season. The crossing takes roughly half an hour. You can also visit on a private charter. The site is an open-air archaeological area with little shade, so go in the morning and bring water and a hat. Check the opening days before you set out.
