Káli Art Inn is the romantic choice at Lake Balaton for couples who would rather wake up among vineyards and stone villages than on a busy beach strip. It sits in Köveskál, in the Káli Basin, a valley of volcanic hills and old farmhouses a short drive inland from the north shore. The inn spreads through a 200-year-old main house, a converted barn and garden buildings, with 16 rooms that are each designed differently.

The garden is the heart of it: over a hectare of lavender, herbs and shady corners, with a classic swimming pool and a quieter natural swimming pond. There is a panoramic sauna and massage by appointment. Breakfasts and dinners use local ingredients and seasonal dishes, with carefully chosen wines from the surrounding hills.

It suits couples who like good food and wine, country walks and swimming in fresh water, with the lake close enough for afternoons in Tihany or a sail from Balatonfüred. It is small and rural: there is no lake view and no nightlife. Couples who want a big spa hotel or a waterfront promenade should base themselves in Balatonfüred or Hévíz instead.

Highlights at a glance

  • 16 individually designed rooms in historic buildings
  • Natural swimming pond and a classic pool
  • Over a hectare of lavender and herb gardens
  • Panoramic garden sauna and massages
  • Wineries of the Káli Basin and Badacsony nearby

Why Couples Love Káli Art Inn

The Káli Basin is the part of Balaton most visitors drive past, which is exactly why it is lovely. Villages of whitewashed stone houses sit among vineyards, with basalt hills and odd rock formations rising out of the fields. Evenings are quiet enough to hear the crickets.

The inn suits that setting. Rooms are individually designed, with natural materials, local stone and handcrafted details, rather than the uniform style of a hotel chain. Some are in the old main house, some in a barn and hayloft, some down in the garden.

The garden makes the stay. Lavender beds, an almond grove and herb gardens surround the pool. The natural swimming pond feels like a private lake. Couples spend afternoons moving between sunbed, water and sauna before an unhurried dinner. It feels like staying with stylish friends in the country.

Rooms to Book

Each of the 16 rooms has its own character, so choose with care.

  • Panoramic Loft: more than 100 square meters, open-plan, in the attic of the 200-year-old main building. The most space and the best views; it is designed for up to three guests but works beautifully for two.
  • Casino Room: in the main building, once an officers' casino, with a large handcrafted copper bathtub. The most romantic room for many couples.
  • Blue Room and White Room: in the former hayloft of the barn, connected by an open gallery. The White Room looks over the pool and lavender garden.
  • Green Room: in the lower garden beside the sauna, with views of the almond grove, the swimming pond and the hill of Hegyestű.
  • Suite: fully renovated and designed for two adults.

The Standard Quadruple Room is aimed at families, so request a room away from it in summer.

Food, Wine and Wellness

Breakfasts and dinners are prepared with local ingredients, homemade specialties and seasonal dishes, so expect garden vegetables, local cheeses and meat from nearby farms. The restaurant serves wines chosen from the region. The Balaton Uplands produce some of Hungary's best whites: crisp Olaszrizling, mineral Kéknyelű from Badacsony and fresh rosé.

Ask the hosts for winery recommendations. The Káli Basin and Badacsony are full of small family estates with tasting terraces, many within a 20-minute drive. Agree on a designated driver or book a local taxi for tasting days.

For wellness, the panoramic sauna sits in the garden. Massages and other treatments are available by prior booking. A couples massage after a day of cycling or swimming is easy to arrange. Between the pool, the pond and the sauna, you can create a very satisfying spa afternoon without leaving the grounds.

Things to Do in the Káli Basin and Around Balaton

The Káli Basin is made for slow exploring by bike or on foot. Walk among the boulders of the Szentbékkálla stone sea, climb Hegyestű for views over the basin and the lake and wander the lanes of neighboring villages. Many have small cafés, galleries and wine cellars that open in summer.

The lake is close. Drive down to the north shore for a swim, rent a sailboat in Balatonfüred or take a sunset walk on the Tihany peninsula, with its twin-towered abbey and views in two directions. Badacsony's vineyards climb a dramatic flat-topped volcanic hill and make a wonderful afternoon of tastings.

On Sundays in season, the Liliomkert market in Káptalantóti draws people from across the region for local produce, antiques and street food. In summer, bring mosquito repellent for evenings near the water.

Getting There

Köveskál is about 2.5 hours by car from Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD), mostly on the M7 motorway along the south shore before crossing over, or via Veszprém on the northern route. Hévíz-Balaton Airport (SOB) at the western end of the lake has limited seasonal flights.

A car is close to essential. Public buses do serve the Káli Basin villages, but schedules are thin. Part of the joy of staying here is hopping between villages, wineries and the lake shore on your own timetable. Rent a car at the airport or in Budapest.

A good plan is to spend a few days in Budapest first, then drive to the Káli Basin for three or four nights. You could also pair it with a night in Tihany or Hévíz to see a different side of Balaton.

Is It Worth It?

For couples who love food, wine and countryside, yes. The inn does not publish rates on its main pages, but expect very roughly $250 a night for two in a standard double with breakfast in summer, with the Panoramic Loft, Casino Room and Suite costing more (approximate; get a quote through the booking page). That is good value for such an individual place.

You are paying for character, a beautiful garden and good cooking, not five-star facilities. There is no lake view, no big spa and no room service menu running through the night.

Pick elsewhere if you want to step straight from your room onto a beach, or if neither of you drives. Balatonfüred's lakeside hotels or the thermal spa hotels in Hévíz are better matches then. For a peaceful country retreat with the lake and the wineries close by, Káli Art Inn is the place to book.

Insider tips

  1. Book the Casino Room for its copper bathtub or the Panoramic Loft for space.
  2. Plan a Sunday for the Liliomkert market in Káptalantóti.
  3. Hire bikes to explore the basin's villages and stone seas.
  4. Book massages ahead, since treatments need prior reservation.

FAQ

Káli Art Inn questions, answered

Is Káli Art Inn on the shore of Lake Balaton?

No. It is in Köveskál, in the Káli Basin a short drive inland from the north shore. You will not see the lake from your room, but beaches in the nearby lakeside villages, Tihany and the Badacsony wineries are all within easy reach by car.

Which room is best for a honeymoon?

The Casino Room, a former officers' casino with a large handcrafted copper bathtub, is the most romantic. The Panoramic Loft is the largest at over 100 square meters. The Blue Room in the old hayloft and the Suite, designed for two adults, are also lovely choices.

Does Káli Art Inn have a pool?

It has two places to swim: a classic swimming pool and a quieter natural swimming pond set in the garden. There is also a panoramic sauna and massages by prior booking. In summer, both pools are surrounded by lavender and herbs.

When is the best time to visit the Káli Basin?

Late May to September is warmest, with lake swimming in July and August when Balaton is busiest. June brings lavender. September is harvest season with fewer crowds. Spring and autumn are quiet and good for walking and wine tasting; check the inn's seasonal dates before you book.

Do we need a car to stay at Káli Art Inn?

Practically, yes. Bus connections in the Káli Basin are limited. Reaching wineries, beaches and Tihany is far easier by car. Budapest Airport (BUD) is about 2.5 hours away. Book a taxi or nominate a driver for tasting days.
