Dromoland Castle

The O'Brien family's castle, fifteen minutes from your transatlantic flight

Dromoland Castle is the easiest way to begin or end an Irish honeymoon in a real castle. It is a five-star hotel in a 16th-century castle on a large estate of parkland, woodland and a lake in County Clare and it sits just 15 minutes from Shannon Airport, where nonstop flights from the US land. You can be in a stateroom with a fire lit within an hour of touching down.

Dromoland was the ancestral home of the O'Brien family, descendants of Brian Ború, the High King of Ireland and the suites are named for that history. Today it offers a full menu of estate pursuits: falconry, archery, fishing, rowing, clay pigeon shooting, an 18-hole golf course and a spa. The Earl of Thomond is the formal restaurant and the cocktail bar sits in the castle library.

Booking sites show entry rooms from roughly $500 a night in quieter months, approximate and much higher from May to September. It suits couples who want a classic castle stay with plenty to do on the grounds and minimal driving after a long flight. Couples who want wild landscape over polish should look at Connemara.

Why Couples Love Dromoland

Arriving at Dromoland is a jolt of storybook Ireland. The drive winds through the estate past the lake, the castle appears with its towers and battlements and staff greet you at the door. Inside, there are oak-paneled halls, portraits of the O'Briens, open fires and lounges made for afternoon tea.

The location makes it practical. After an overnight flight, you can settle in fast, nap and wake up for dinner without facing hours on unfamiliar roads. On the way home, a last night here lets you sleep in and still make your flight.

The estate is big enough to fill a day or two. Falconry is a favorite with couples: you walk through the woods with a hawk and its handler and the bird lands on your gloved hand. It is unexpectedly moving and a highlight for many guests.

Rooms and Suites to Book

Categories climb from Queen Anne rooms (from 30 square meters) and Queen Anne Courtyard rooms to Deluxe and Viscount Deluxe rooms (from 34 square meters), Staterooms (from 44 square meters) and Viscount Staterooms (from 46 square meters). Above them sit the suites, including the Lady Mary O'Brien Suite and the Brian Ború Suite, the grandest in the castle. The estate also has lodges.

For a honeymoon, a Stateroom is the sweet spot. You get period decor, more space and often views over the lake or golf course without suite prices. If you want to splurge for one night, the named suites are memorable.

The Queen Anne rooms are comfortable but smaller. Ask for a room in the main castle and request a lake view in writing. Tell the hotel you are on honeymoon.

Food, Drink and the Spa

The Earl of Thomond is the fine-dining restaurant, with seasonal menus and a tasting menu in a grand room with chandeliers and views of the grounds. Book it for one special night and dress up a little. The Fig Tree is the more relaxed restaurant and bar and good for a casual dinner after a day on the road.

Afternoon tea in the castle drawing room is a Dromoland ritual. The cocktail bar, set in the castle library, is the best place for a drink before dinner. The resort also offers in-room dining and picnics for estate walks.

The spa uses products from Dr. Barbara Sturm, Seabody and OSKIA. There is also a leisure center for rainy days and spa packages that combine treatments with dinner.

Things to Do

The estate's activities are a big part of the stay. Falconry, archery, clay pigeon shooting, fishing, rowing on the lake and stand-up paddleboarding are all available. Golfers can play the castle's own course or use the Trackman simulator room; tennis, cycling, hiking and yoga suit the rest.

Beyond the gates, the Cliffs of Moher are about an hour's drive. Go early or late to avoid the crowds. The Burren, a lunar limestone landscape dotted with wildflowers in spring, is about 45 minutes away and Doolin has some of Ireland's best traditional music pubs.

Bunratty Castle and Folk Park are a few minutes from Dromoland and make a good half day. Ennis, the county town, has good restaurants and shops about 20 minutes north.

Getting There

Shannon Airport (SNN) is about 15 minutes from Dromoland by car. It has nonstop flights from several US cities, which makes Dromoland one of the easiest castle hotels in Ireland to reach. The hotel can arrange a transfer.

If you are driving, remember that Ireland drives on the left and many roads in Clare are narrow. After a red-eye, consider a car service to the castle and pick up a rental car the next day.

Dromoland works as the first or last stop of a road trip along the Wild Atlantic Way. From here, Galway and Connemara lie to the north and the Dingle Peninsula and Killarney to the south, each about two to three hours away.

Good to Know

May to September brings the longest days and most reliable weather and it is also the busiest and most expensive time. Spring and autumn are quieter with lower rates. Winter is dark early but cozy in a castle.

Pack waterproof jackets and walking shoes for both of you; rain is likely at some point. Smart casual is fine for most of the hotel, but most couples dress up for the Earl of Thomond.

Dromoland welcomes families and has family rooms and dog-friendly rooms. It is lively in summer and at weekends. Ask for a room away from the family rooms if you want quiet.

Book dinner and activities such as falconry when you book your room, as slots fill in busy months.

Is It Worth It?

For couples flying into Shannon, Dromoland is an excellent splurge. The castle is genuine, the estate is full of things to do and the location takes the stress out of arrival and departure. Low-season rates are reasonable for a five-star castle.

The trade-offs: it is a big, busy hotel, with families, golfers and weddings as well as couples. Summer rates are high and the entry rooms are less memorable than the staterooms.

Couples who want wilder scenery and a more relaxed vibe should look at Ballynahinch Castle in Connemara. Those who want a small country house with exceptional food near the Burren could choose Gregans Castle. For a classic Irish castle experience with falconry, golf and an easy airport run, Dromoland is hard to beat.

Which room should we book at Dromoland Castle?
