The Alpina Gstaad is the contemporary luxury hotel of Gstaad and the one to choose if you want modern comfort inside a traditional chalet shell. It opened in 2012 on the Oberbort hillside above the village. Travel writers have called it one of only two new five-star hotels in Gstaad in more than a century. The building is limestone and wood, the interiors layer old timber with modern art and every one of its 56 rooms and suites has a balcony or terrace facing the mountains.
It suits couples who want a big spa, serious food and a quieter, more residential feel than a grand hotel in the village center. The Six Senses Spa covers about 2,000 square meters. It has an indoor pool and a heated outdoor pool in the garden that stays open all year. Restaurants include the fine-dining Sommet and a Japanese restaurant. The Promenade, the trails and the Glacier 3000 shuttle are all a few minutes away.
The Alpina is family friendly, with a kids' program, so you will share the pool at holiday times. For romance in the off-peak months, it is hard to beat.
Highlights at a glance
- 56 rooms and suites, all with balconies or terraces
- Six Senses Spa of about 2,000 square meters
- Heated outdoor pool open year-round
- Fine dining at Sommet
- Hilltop setting above Gstaad village
Why Couples Love The Alpina
It feels like a very rich friend's chalet. Public rooms mix centuries-old wood with contemporary pieces and art by names like Tracey Emin and Barbara Kruger. There are fireplaces to read beside and a cigar lounge for a nightcap. Nothing feels stiff.
The hilltop position gives it calm and a view. You look out over the Saanenland valley and the Bernese Alps, with the village a short walk or shuttle ride below. In the evening, you can stroll down to the Promenade for a drink and be back by the fire within minutes.
The spa is the other big reason. Couples who spend a full afternoon there tend to talk about it more than the skiing. Earlier reviews describe a Silent Stay option in which staff contact you only in writing, a nice touch if you want to switch off completely. Ask whether it is still offered when you book.
Rooms and Suites to Book
All 56 rooms and suites have a balcony or terrace and mountain views, so even the entry category gives you outdoor space. Interiors use reclaimed wood, stone and soft textiles. Bathrooms are generous by Alpine standards.
For a honeymoon, a junior suite or a suite on an upper floor is worth the upgrade. You get a separate seating area, more light and a better angle over the valley. The duplex Panorama Suite on the top floors adds a fireplace and separate dining and working spaces. It is a real splurge, but a memorable one.
Rooms facing south and west catch the best light. Ask for one when you book and mention that it is your honeymoon. A request for a high floor also helps, since lower rooms can look into the garden rather than across the valley. In winter, a balcony with a heated blanket and a hot drink is a fine way to watch the snow.
Food, Drink and the Spa
Dining is a big part of the Alpina's reputation. Sommet, led by chef Martin Göschel, is the fine-dining room and holds 18 GaultMillau points. MEGU serves Japanese cuisine and the Swiss Stübli handles fondue and raclette in a wood-paneled room. Restaurant lineups can change by season, so check what is open during your dates and book the tasting menu at Sommet for one special night.
The Six Senses Spa covers about 2,000 square meters. It has a pool of about 80 feet, a fitness center, a yoga studio, salt grottos, a hammam and a juice bar. The heated outdoor pool in the garden is open year-round. Swimming there while snow falls is one of the best experiences in Gstaad.
Book couples' treatments well ahead in February and at New Year, when the spa is busiest. Off-peak afternoons are quieter.
Why guests fall for it
Things to Do
Gstaad is a year-round resort with a gentle pace.
- Glacier 3000: ride the cable car up to the glacier and cross the Peak Walk, a suspension bridge between two summits.
- Skiing: the Gstaad ski area spreads over several mountains, with long cruising runs and good lunch huts.
- Lauenensee: a summer hike or e-bike ride to a lake below the Geltenschuss waterfalls.
- GoldenPass Express: a scenic train to Montreux and Lake Geneva for a day trip.
- The Promenade: shops, galleries and cafes in dark-wood chalets, all car-free.
If one of you wants mountain adventure and the other prefers a slow morning, the Alpina makes it easy. The spa and the garden pool fill a day well. A fondue lunch in a mountain hut brings you both back together in the afternoon.
Getting There
Geneva Airport (GVA) is the usual gateway. By train, travel to Montreux along Lake Geneva, then take the GoldenPass line up into the mountains to Gstaad. The whole trip takes about two and a half to three hours and the second half is beautiful. Ask the hotel to meet you at Gstaad station.
By car, Geneva is roughly two hours away and Zurich about two and a half to three hours, depending on traffic and snow. Bern Airport (BRN) and Saanen's small airfield handle private flights.
Once you arrive, you rarely need a car. The village is walkable and the hotel runs transfers. Ski buses and trains connect to the lifts and to neighboring villages like Saanen and Schönried.
Is It Worth It?
For couples who value a top spa and modern design, yes. The Alpina gives you more space, newer rooms and a stronger wellness offer than most hotels in the Alps. Rates are high: expect roughly $1,200 a night and up for two in an entry room, approximate. Holiday weeks in winter cost much more. Shoulder months in early summer and September offer better value.
Couples who want a grand old palace with turrets and a ballroom should choose the Gstaad Palace instead. Those who want to be right on the Promenade might prefer Le Grand Bellevue. If you are on a tighter budget, a chalet hotel in Saanen or Schönried gives you the same mountains for less. The Alpina is for couples who want the full comfort of a new chalet hotel and will use the spa every day.
