Masseria Torre Maizza is the Puglia honeymoon hotel for couples who want the masseria experience with five-star polish. It is a renovated 16th-century fortified farmhouse near Savelletri di Fasano, wrapped in ancient olive groves a short drive from the Adriatic. Whitewashed walls, vaulted ceilings, pale stone and bursts of bougainvillea make it one of the prettiest hotels in the region.

The hotel belongs to Rocco Forte Hotels and the rooms were designed by Olga Polizzi, who keeps the local character with a lighter, contemporary touch. Dinner at Carosello is served in the former stables, the Bougainvillea bar sits in a 16th-century barn and there is a rooftop bar for sunset. The Irene Forte Spa, a pool, a nine-hole executive golf course and the Lido Bambù beach club south of Monopoli round it out.

It suits couples who want a smaller, more intimate alternative to the big resorts nearby, with beaches, towns and olive groves all within easy reach. Couples who want to walk to restaurants every evening should split their stay with a few nights in Monopoli, Ostuni or Polignano a Mare.

Why Couples Love Torre Maizza

It feels like Puglia at its most romantic. You arrive through olive groves where some trees are hundreds of years old, then pass into a whitewashed courtyard with a tower and flowers spilling over the walls. The scale is intimate, so it rarely feels crowded.

The design is a big part of the appeal. Olga Polizzi's rooms use local stone, vaulted ceilings and soft colors, with modern bathrooms and plenty of light. Common areas are relaxed and comfortable, from the poolside loungers to the rooftop bar where couples gather for sunset.

The location works well too. The beaches of the Adriatic coast and the towns of Monopoli, Polignano a Mare and Ostuni are all within a short drive and the Itria Valley's trulli are about half an hour inland. You can explore by day and come back to the quiet of the olive groves.

Rooms and Suites to Book

Rooms have king-size beds and stone bathrooms. Junior Suites keep the original vaulted ceilings. Suites are designed for couples, with private gardens and the Forte Suites have views over the countryside and toward the Adriatic.

For a honeymoon, a Suite with a private garden gives you outdoor space for breakfast and afternoon reading, which makes a real difference in the Puglian heat. A Forte Suite adds more room and the best views.

The Borgo degli Ulivi, a separate cluster within the estate, can host up to 22 guests and includes four Grand Suites with their own gardens and pools, six Junior Suites and an Itria Suite with a private garden. A Grand Suite with a private pool is the most private option at the hotel and a lovely splurge for a few nights.

Food, Drink and the Spa

Carosello, set in the former stables, is the main restaurant and overlooks the pool. The menu is built on Puglian produce: burrata, orecchiette, fresh fish, vegetables and olive oil from the region. Violetta offers relaxed drinks and snacks and the Bougainvillea bar, in a 16th-century barn redesigned by Olga Polizzi, is lovely after dinner.

The rooftop bar is the place for sunset, with views over the olive groves. Order a local Primitivo or a glass of rosé from the Salento.

The Irene Forte Spa combines natural ingredients with modern wellness approaches, using products from the Irene Forte skincare line. A couples' massage after a day at the beach is well worth booking. The pool is the center of the hotel in summer.

Things to Do

Spend a day at Lido Bambù, the hotel's beach club at Capitolo south of Monopoli, with a shuttle from the hotel. It is set up with loungers, umbrellas and a restaurant. On the hotel grounds, the nine-hole executive golf course suits a relaxed round.

The towns are the other highlight. Polignano a Mare sits on cliffs above the sea. Monopoli has a lively old port. Ostuni, the white city, is lovely at dusk. Alberobello, with its cone-roofed trulli, is about half an hour inland and Locorotondo and Cisternino are great for dinner.

The hotel can arrange cooking classes, olive oil tastings, boat trips and bike rides through the countryside. In the evening, the archaeological site of Egnazia, nearby on the coast, makes a pleasant stop at golden hour.

Getting There

The nearest airport is Brindisi (BDS), about 45 minutes by car. Bari Karol Wojtyła (BRI), which has more connections, is about 50 to 60 minutes away. Most couples from the United States connect through Rome, Milan or another European hub.

A car is useful in Puglia, since the towns and beaches are spread out and public transport is limited. Roads are generally easy to drive, though old towns have restricted zones for traffic. Alternatively, the hotel can arrange drivers and transfers.

If you are combining Puglia with Rome, the high-speed train from Rome to Bari takes about four hours and the hotel can meet you at the station. Fasano's train station is a short drive from the hotel.

Is It Worth It?

For couples who want a polished masseria without the size of a resort, it is one of the best options in Puglia. The design, food and spa are excellent and the beach club solves the question of where to swim.

It is more expensive than many family-run masserie and in August it fills with Italian and international holidaymakers. Couples on a smaller budget can find simpler masserie nearby with more rustic charm. Those who want a huge resort with many restaurants should look at larger properties in the area.

The hotel is seasonal, usually from spring to autumn. May, June and September are ideal for warm days, a swimmable sea and fewer crowds than in July and August.
