At a glance

Five nights on Eleuthera and four on Harbour Island, linked by a 10-minute water taxi. It suits couples who like to discover beaches with nobody on them, followed by a pretty village and a polished beach hotel on three miles of pink sand. Go December through May, with April and May often the nicest. Avoid September and October, when many places close.

Eleuthera and Harbour Island sit a 10-minute boat ride apart in the Bahamas, but they feel like two different honeymoons. This 10-day itinerary gives five nights to Eleuthera, a long, skinny island of sandy turnoffs and pink Atlantic beaches, then four to Harbour Island, where pastel cottages and a three-mile beach are all within reach by golf cart.

Eleuthera is the adventure half. You rent a car, follow hand-painted signs down sandy tracks and often find a beach with no one else on it. Friday nights mean the fish fry in Governor's Harbour. Harbour Island is the polished half and the splurge, with beachfront cottages, long lunches and sunrise walks on Pink Sands Beach.

December through May has the best weather. April and May are often the nicest months, with warm water and fewer crowds than the holidays. Many places close in September and October. Fly in via Nassau or on a seasonal nonstop. Expect island style rather than big-resort polish.

Day by day

Days 1–3: Central Eleuthera

Fly into Governor's Harbour Airport (GHB), either on a seasonal nonstop or with a flight of under 30 minutes from Nassau. Pick up your rental car, booked well ahead since fleets are small and run by local family agencies. Base yourselves near Governor's Harbour, the most convenient area for groceries and restaurants. French Leave Resort has villas above the bay a short walk from town.

Spend day one settling in and watching the sunset on the calm Caribbean side.

On day two, go beach hopping. Look for hand-painted signs and parked cars at sandy turnoffs. Bring water, shade and snorkel gear, since most beaches have no facilities. Spending an afternoon on a pink beach with nobody else on it is the romantic moment of Eleuthera.

On day three, drive south for a long day at Lighthouse Beach, near the island's quiet southern tip. Keep the fuel tank above half, since gas stations are spread out. If it is a Friday, finish at the fish fry in Governor's Harbour.

Days 4–5: North Eleuthera

Move north on day four, toward Gregory Town and the Glass Window Bridge. The Cove Eleuthera sits on two private coves near Gregory Town and is one of the island's most polished hotels. It is a good place to slow down before Harbour Island.

Stop at Ocean Hole, a saltwater swimming hole, on the drive. In the morning, walk to the Glass Window Bridge, where the deep blue Atlantic and the pale green bight lie a few yards apart. Respect the Atlantic here. Waves at Queen's Bath and exposed beaches can knock you over without warning on rough days.

On day five, snorkel the coves near your hotel, read in the shade and enjoy a last sunset on the quiet side of Eleuthera.

Days 6–10: Harbour Island

On day six, drop your car near North Eleuthera and take a short taxi to Three Island Dock. Water taxis cross to Harbour Island in about ten minutes. Cash is expected. Your hotel can arrange a golf cart to meet you on the other side.

This is your splurge. The Dunmore has cottages tucked into the dune and a clubby restaurant. Pink Sands Resort spreads colorful cottages through tropical gardens with direct beach access. In town, The Rock House is a boutique hotel with a pool terrace over the harbor, suited to couples who want to walk to dinner.

The romantic moment comes early. Walk Pink Sands Beach at sunrise, when the sand glows rose and the beach is empty.

Fill the rest with small pleasures. Take a golf cart tour of Dunmore Town's pastel cottages. Ride horses along the shore. Book a long lunch at Sip Sip. Snorkel the Devil's Backbone reef with a guide. Watch harbor sunsets with a cocktail.

On day ten, take the water taxi back and fly home from North Eleuthera (ELH).

Getting Between Stops

Eleuthera has three airports. Fly into the one nearest your first hotel: Governor's Harbour (GHB) for the center, North Eleuthera (ELH) for the north and Harbour Island. Seasonal nonstops from cities such as Atlanta and Miami have served the island, but schedules change, so check before booking. Otherwise connect in Nassau for a flight of under 30 minutes. The Bahamas Ferries fast ferry from Nassau is another option on a calm day.

A rental car is essential on Eleuthera, since there is no public transportation. Traffic drives on the left. Roads are narrow and many beach turnoffs are soft sand, so do not push a small car where it might get stuck. Ask your agency about returning the car in the north.

On Harbour Island, you do not need a car. Golf carts, bikes and your own feet cover everything.

Where to Stay

On Eleuthera, choose by region. Central Eleuthera around Governor's Harbour is the most convenient base. French Leave Resort sits above the bay there. The north, around Gregory Town and the Glass Window Bridge, suits couples who want dramatic scenery and quick access to Harbour Island. The Cove Eleuthera is the polished choice there. The south, near Rock Sound, is the quietest. Beach cottages and villas across the island can be good value for a week.

On Harbour Island, nearly every hotel worth booking sits on or just above Pink Sands Beach. The Dunmore and Pink Sands Resort are classics. Coral Sands is a little larger and good value by island standards. The Rock House is in town.

Wherever you stay, ask whether a golf cart is included, since rentals run short in high season.

When to Go

December through May brings the most comfortable weather, with sunny, breezy days and highs from the upper 70s to low 80s Fahrenheit. April and May are often the nicest months for couples, with warmer water and fewer visitors than over Christmas or spring break.

In winter, cold fronts can make the Atlantic side rough and bring a cool, breezy day now and then. Pack a light layer for evenings in January and February. Summer is hot but very swimmable, with quick afternoon showers.

Hurricane season runs June through November and peaks from August into October. Many hotels and restaurants on both islands close for several weeks in September and October. If your dates fall then, confirm your hotel is open and that a rental car and restaurants will be available.

Budget and Booking

Harbour Island is one of the pricier spots in the Bahamas. As an approximate guide, beachfront hotels there run from several hundred dollars to over $1,000 a night in high season. Eleuthera is gentler, with small hotels and cottages that can be good value, so spending more nights there balances the budget.

Book in this order: your Eleuthera rental car, then your Harbour Island hotel and golf cart, then everything else. Cars and carts both sell out in high season. Reserve the Glass Window and Lighthouse Beach days around the weather rather than fixed dates.

Carry cash. Water taxis, conch stands, fish fry stalls and some small shops do not take cards. ATMs are few. Mention your honeymoon when you reserve. Small hotels often set up a beach dinner, flowers or a bottle at turndown.

Staying Comfortable and Safe

The ocean is the main hazard. On rough days, Atlantic waves can surge over rocks at Queen's Bath and the Glass Window Bridge. Strong waves can reach exposed beaches even inside the reef. Swim near your hotel, watch for warning flags and stay on the sheltered side when the wind is up.

On Eleuthera, keep the tank above half and download offline maps, since cell coverage is weak on remote beaches. Take water, snacks, shade and reef-safe sunscreen on beach days.

Bring insect repellent for dusk. If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices before you book. Dress is relaxed on both islands, though a few Harbour Island restaurants lean smart casual at dinner for both of you.

Make It Shorter or Longer

For a 7-day trip, spend three nights in north Eleuthera and four on Harbour Island. You will miss Lighthouse Beach in the south, but the Glass Window Bridge and Harbour Island are easy from the north.

Couples who want no driving at all can spend the whole trip on Harbour Island, crossing to Eleuthera for a single day trip with a driver.

With 12 to 14 days, add a few nights in Exuma for a contrast in pace, with its chain of cays and boat days. Fowl Cay Resort, a private island near Staniel Cay, is a memorable splurge there. Connections usually route through Nassau, so plan a full travel day. Alternatively, add two or three nights in the quiet south of Eleuthera near Rock Sound.

FAQ

Planning this trip

How do you get from Eleuthera to Harbour Island?

Take a taxi to Three Island Dock near North Eleuthera Airport, then a small water taxi across the harbor in about ten minutes. Fares are low and cash is expected. Hotels on Harbour Island can arrange a golf cart to meet you on arrival.

Do we need a rental car on Eleuthera?

Yes. There is no public transportation and the beaches are spread along one long island road. Book the car before anything else, since fleets are small and sell out in high season. On Harbour Island, you will use a golf cart instead.

Is Pink Sands Beach really pink?

It has a soft pink tint, strongest in early morning and late afternoon light and where the sand is wet. The color comes from tiny shell fragments. It is three miles long and calm enough for swimming most days, though windy days bring stronger waves.

When should we avoid Eleuthera and Harbour Island?

September and October are the riskiest months. Hurricane risk peaks and many hotels and restaurants close for several weeks. Christmas, New Year and spring break are busy and expensive. April and May are often the sweet spot.

Which should we do first, Eleuthera or Harbour Island?

We recommend Eleuthera first. You do the driving and beach hunting while you have energy, then finish on Harbour Island with no car and a polished hotel. It also puts you close to North Eleuthera Airport for the flight home.
