The short answer

Exuma is the Bahamas at its most cinematic: more than 360 cays, shallow water in impossible blues and days built around a boat rather than a beach chair. December through May is the main season, with April and May often ideal; August to October is the core of hurricane season. A private captain for a full day runs roughly $800 to well over $1,500 for two. Stays range from Grand Isle Resort's villas to waterfront cottages at Staniel Cay. Plan five to seven nights. Don't miss snorkeling Thunderball Grotto at slack tide.

Best for
  • Couples who love long boat days
  • Snorkelers drawn to clear, calm water
  • Couples craving quiet over nightlife
Maybe skip it if
  • You get seasick or dislike boats
  • You want a lively resort town

From the window of the plane, Exuma looks like someone spilled paint. The chain runs about 130 miles from north to south, more than 360 cays strung along the edge of a deep ocean trench, with sand flats and channels in between that shift from mint to sapphire as the tide moves. Very little of it is developed. Great Exuma and Little Exuma, joined by a short bridge, hold most of the people and the airport. Everything north of there is a scatter of uninhabited islands, private estates and a national park reachable only by water.

That is the appeal for honeymooners. Here the day revolves around a boat rather than a beach chair. You hire a captain, pack a cooler and spend eight hours stopping wherever the water looks best: a sandbar for a swim, a grotto for snorkeling, a dock where nurse sharks glide around your ankles. Evenings are quiet. Dinner might be grilled lobster at a marina bar where the other guests arrived by yacht.

Why Honeymoon in Exuma

Exuma gives you the famous Bahamas scenery without the crowds of Nassau. The water here is shallow and sheltered on the banks side, which keeps it calm and outrageously clear for swimming most of the year. A boat day feels like a private expedition because so many of the cays have no buildings at all.

There is enough variety for a week. The Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park protects a long section of the northern chain, with mangrove creeks on Shroud Cay and trails on Warderick Wells. The swimming pigs at Big Major Cay are silly in the best way. Thunderball Grotto, the cave used in the 1965 James Bond film, fills with fish when the sun comes through the roof.

On land, George Town keeps things practical with a grocery store, a few restaurants and the harbor where couples catch the water taxi to Stocking Island.

When to Go

December through May is the main season. Days are sunny and dry with highs around the upper 70s to low 80s°F. Nights can feel cool enough for a light layer in January. Strong winter cold fronts sometimes bring a few windy days that cancel boat trips, so leave slack in your plan.

April and May are often ideal: warmer water, calmer seas and fewer people than at Christmas or spring break. June and July get hot and humid but are still good on the water.

August through October is the core of hurricane season. Some smaller lodges and restaurants close in September and October while boat operators trim their schedules. November is a shoulder month that can be lovely, though it is worth checking which places have reopened. If boating is your main goal, prioritize calm wind forecasts over everything else.

Where to Stay

Great Exuma has the most choice and the easiest logistics. On Emerald Bay, about 12 minutes north of the airport, Grand Isle Resort has big hillside villas with kitchens, a beach club and a spa, a good fit if you want space. Smaller beach inns and rental cottages line the coast around George Town and out toward Little Exuma.

For seclusion, look north to the cays around Staniel Cay. Staniel Cay Yacht Club rents cottages on the water and has its own airstrip, which puts the pigs and Thunderball Grotto a few minutes away. Fowl Cay Resort occupies a private island nearby with a handful of villas and a boat for each.

A useful approach for a week is a split: three nights in the cays, three on Great Exuma.

Romantic Things to Do

Book a private boat with a captain for at least one full day. A good route from Great Exuma or Staniel Cay hits Pig Beach in the morning before the day tours arrive, Thunderball Grotto at slack tide and a sandbar for lunch.

Take the water taxi from George Town to Stocking Island. Hike the short trail to Monument Hill for the view, then settle in at Chat 'N' Chill for conch salad and a cold Kalik with your feet in the sand.

Drive to Little Exuma for Tropic of Cancer Beach, a long arc of pale sand where a line marks the latitude. Go late in the day for the light.

Divers can join a boat out of George Town to blue holes and reef walls. Kayaking the mangrove creeks of Shroud Cay is a calm, beautiful morning on the water.

Getting There and Around

Exuma International Airport sits on Great Exuma about 15 minutes north of George Town. Nonstop flights from the US have historically come from Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Atlanta and Charlotte, some only on weekends or in high season, so check current schedules. Otherwise fly into Nassau and take a 40 minute hop on Bahamasair or a small carrier.

If you stay in the northern cays, small charter airlines fly directly to Staniel Cay from Nassau and South Florida. Fast boats also run day trips from Nassau, but the long open-water crossing can be rough and leaves little time in the cays.

On Great Exuma, rent a car for at least part of your stay; traffic keeps left and roads are narrow. Taxis meet flights but are pricey for repeated trips. Between cays, you need a boat. Rent one yourself only if you are experienced with tides and shallow water.

Food and Drink

Seafood rules. Conch salad, diced raw with lime, onion, peppers and a little heat, is made to order at stands and beach bars across the island. Cracked conch is the fried version. Spiny lobster is in season from August through March. Grouper and snapper turn up grilled, blackened or steamed with tomato and onion.

George Town has a handful of casual restaurants plus a supermarket for stocking up. Splash at Hideaways at Palm Bay is known for its conch chowder. On Stocking Island, Chat 'N' Chill hosts a Sunday pig roast that is half party, half community gathering.

In the cays, eating happens mostly at marina restaurants and resort dining rooms, so book dinners ahead. Many couples order a picnic lunch for boat days. Drink a Sky Juice at least once: gin, coconut water and condensed milk.

Honeymoon Tips

Hire boats only from licensed operators. Ask how many people share the trip. A private charter costs more but lets you set the order of stops to dodge the midday crowd at Pig Beach.

Watch the tides. Thunderball Grotto is best near slack low tide, when you can swim in without fighting the current. The cuts between cays can run fast, so never swim alone or far from the boat.

Pigs and sharks are wild animals. Follow your guide, do not feed sharks by hand and keep food out of reach of the pigs.

Pack reef-safe sunscreen, a rash guard and a dry bag for phones. Bring cash for water taxis and beach bars. Cell coverage is decent on Great Exuma but patchy in the park, which some couples count as a feature.

FAQ

Exuma honeymoon FAQ

How many days do we need in Exuma?

Five to seven nights works well. That allows two boat days with a weather buffer, a day on Stocking Island, a drive to Little Exuma and time to do nothing. Winter cold fronts can bring a windy day or two that ground boats, so a short stay risks missing the cays entirely. Pairing Exuma with Nassau or Harbour Island fills out a longer trip.

Is it safe to swim with the pigs and sharks?

It is generally fine with a reputable guide, though there have been bites and minor injuries. Pigs can get pushy around food, so do not carry snacks into the water. The nurse sharks at Compass Cay are used to people, but they are still wild. Follow the operator's rules, keep hands to yourself and skip it if you feel uneasy.

Can we fly directly to Exuma from the US?

Often, yes. Exuma International has had nonstops from Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Atlanta and Charlotte, though several are seasonal or weekly, so check current schedules before you lock in dates. The fallback is any nonstop to Nassau followed by a short domestic flight to George Town. Leave a generous connection in Nassau, because inter-island flights are sometimes delayed.

Do we need to rent a car in Exuma?

On Great Exuma, yes, if you want to explore the beaches beyond your hotel or eat around George Town. Taxis meet flights but add up quickly. Driving is on the left and roads are narrow with few streetlights. In the northern cays you will not need a car, since you get around by boat or on foot.

What does a private boat day in Exuma cost?

Prices vary widely with boat size, fuel and departure point, so treat this as approximate. A full private day with a captain often runs from about $800 to well over $1,500 for two. Small group tours cost less per person. Ask whether fuel, snacks, snorkel gear and the captain's tip are included before you book.
