At a glance

Two nights in Ho Chi Minh City for rooftop cocktails and a scooter food tour, three in Siem Reap for sunrise at Angkor Wat and the jungle temples, then five on Phu Quoc, an island in the Gulf of Thailand with some of Vietnam's best beach resorts. Short flights link every stop. It suits couples who want a great ancient site and a beach in one trip. Go from December to February.

This honeymoon pairs two countries in a way that feels natural on a map and easy in practice. Ho Chi Minh City is the gateway, Siem Reap is the great adventure and Phu Quoc is where you finally stop.

You land in Ho Chi Minh City, which still goes by Saigon in conversation. Vietnam Airlines has flown nonstop from San Francisco, which makes this one of the easier starts in Southeast Asia. Two nights give you rooftop bars, colonial cafes and a food tour on the back of a scooter.

A flight of about an hour takes you to Siem Reap in Cambodia for the temples of Angkor. You watch sunrise behind Angkor Wat's five towers, find the stone faces of the Bayon and wander among the fig roots of Ta Prohm. Three nights is the right amount for a honeymoon, with afternoons by the pool.

The finale is five nights on Phu Quoc, Vietnam's largest island, with long sunset beaches on the Gulf of Thailand, pepper farms and resorts built for honeymooners.

Day by day

Days 1–2: Ho Chi Minh City

Land at Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN), either nonstop from San Francisco on Vietnam Airlines or after a connection in Tokyo, Seoul, Taipei, Hong Kong or Singapore. A Grab car or official taxi reaches the old District 1 core in 30 to 45 minutes. Book a couples massage for the afternoon to work out the flight.

On the evening of day 1, take your first drink at the Caravelle's rooftop bar, a classic in the city for decades. On day 2, have morning coffee at a cafe in a colonial apartment block and walk past the Opera House and along Nguyen Hue walking street. Rest through the afternoon heat.

In the evening, take a street food tour on the back of scooters with experienced drivers. Then finish with a nightcap on a riverside rooftop as the city lights reflect on the Saigon River. That late, warm view over the water is the romantic moment of the city. Crossing the street takes nerve: walk at a steady pace and the traffic will flow around you.

Days 3–5: Siem Reap and Angkor

Fly to Siem Reap Angkor International Airport (SAI) on day 3, about an hour. The airport opened in 2023 about 30 miles east of town, so allow about an hour for the transfer. Buy a three-day Angkor pass at the official ticket center or online. Carry it at all times. Spend the evening at a Phare circus show.

On day 4, leave before dawn for sunrise behind Angkor Wat's five towers, reflected in the lotus ponds. Watching the sky turn pink behind the temple you have seen in photos all your life is the romantic moment of the trip. Explore Angkor Wat afterward, then rest by the pool through the midday heat. In the late afternoon, visit the Bayon to find its giant stone faces.

On day 5, see Ta Prohm early, when its root-split galleries are quietest. In the afternoon, take a boat through the stilt villages of the Tonle Sap lake. Hire a tuk-tuk and driver for the day at a fixed rate. Both of you need covered shoulders and knees inside the temples.

Days 6–10: Phu Quoc

Fly from Siem Reap to Phu Quoc on day 6, connecting through Ho Chi Minh City. The domestic flight from Ho Chi Minh City to Phu Quoc International Airport (PQC) takes about an hour. Most resorts are 15 to 30 minutes away and will meet you with a car.

Day 7 is for nothing at all. On day 8, take a snorkeling day in the An Thoi islands in the south. In the afternoon, ride the Hon Thom cable car over the islands. On day 9, book your splurge: a pool villa or a beach dinner at your resort. The JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay plays out a whimsical university theme on the white-sand cove of Bai Khem. La Veranda on Long Beach is calmer and more classic.

On day 10, walk the Kiss Bridge at dusk and eat grilled seafood at the Duong Dong night market. Sunset cocktails on Long Beach, as the sun sinks into the Gulf of Thailand, are the romantic moment of Phu Quoc. Plan at least one of those evenings with nothing else on the schedule.

Day 11: Home via Ho Chi Minh City

Fly from Phu Quoc to Ho Chi Minh City, about an hour. Connect home from there. A growing number of international routes from Asian hubs land directly on Phu Quoc, so compare those too. Leave a generous gap between flights if you are on separate tickets.

If your long-haul flight leaves late at night from Ho Chi Minh City, consider taking an early afternoon flight off the island and spending a few hours in the city. A last rooftop drink and a bowl of pho make a good farewell.

If your flight leaves the next morning, a night near the center or the airport takes the pressure off. Otherwise, ask your resort for a late checkout and spend the morning on the beach before the flight.

Getting Between Stops

Three short flights do the work. Ho Chi Minh City to Siem Reap takes about an hour. Siem Reap to Phu Quoc usually connects through Ho Chi Minh City, with the Phu Quoc leg taking about an hour. Phu Quoc back to Ho Chi Minh City takes about an hour.

Book flights with sensible connection times and check bag limits. Siem Reap Angkor International Airport (SAI) is about an hour from town by car. Hotels arrange pickups and shuttle buses also run.

In Ho Chi Minh City, use the Grab app for cars and bikes. It shows the fare up front. In Siem Reap, hire a tuk-tuk and driver for the day at a fixed rate, or an air-conditioned car for longer trips. On Phu Quoc, Grab cars and resort shuttles cover most trips. Scooters are widely rented, but traffic on the main roads can be unpredictable.

Where to Stay

In Ho Chi Minh City, the big romantic choices cluster near the Opera House. Park Hyatt Saigon has a deep, calm pool. The Caravelle and the Hotel Continental Saigon carry decades of history. The Reverie Saigon, on the riverfront, goes for maximal Italian glamour. Hotel des Arts Saigon is more intimate.

In Siem Reap, Raffles Grand Hotel d'Angkor has hosted travelers since the early 1930s. Amansara offers intimate suites with private plunge pools and its own temple guides. Park Hyatt Siem Reap is a stylish central option. Phum Baitang, among rice paddies just outside town, has stilted wooden villas, some with private pools.

On Phu Quoc, Long Beach has the best sunsets and the most restaurants, with La Veranda and the Regent Phu Quoc. The JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay sits on Bai Khem in the south.

When to Go

December to February is the sweet spot for all three stops. Siem Reap has clear skies and its lowest temperatures, with highs around the upper 80s Fahrenheit. Ho Chi Minh City is sunny and slightly less humid. Phu Quoc's west coast is calm and sunny. This is peak season, so book early, especially around Christmas and New Year.

Late November and March are also good, though March gets hot at Angkor. April is the hottest month in Siem Reap, which makes temple visits an endurance test.

From May to October, rain arrives across the region, often in short, heavy bursts. Angkor's moats fill and crowds thin. Phu Quoc's west coast gets rough, so choose a resort on the southeast around Sao Beach or Bai Khem in those months. Tet in late January or February closes many family-run businesses in Vietnam.

Budget and Booking

Plan on roughly $250–800 a night for two across good hotels. Ho Chi Minh City and Siem Reap are strong value, with excellent boutique hotels well below US prices. Amansara and Phu Quoc's top resorts sit at the high end. All figures are approximate.

Book Siem Reap and Phu Quoc first for December and January, when the best rooms sell out. Book the regional flights once your long-haul tickets are set.

Other costs include the Angkor pass, a tuk-tuk driver and a temple guide, the Phare circus, a Tonle Sap boat trip, the street food tour, a snorkeling day and the Hon Thom cable car. Street food and casual seafood are inexpensive in both countries.

Make It Shorter or Longer

For eight days, cut Ho Chi Minh City to one night and spend four on Phu Quoc. Or skip Phu Quoc and add two nights in Hoi An instead.

With two weeks, add Hoi An between Siem Reap and Phu Quoc. Fly to Da Nang, about 45 minutes from Hoi An, for four nights of lanterns, tailors and An Bang beach. Hoi An is best from February to April, so this version suits a late winter honeymoon.

Couples who want a quieter beach can swap Phu Quoc for Con Dao, about an hour's flight from Ho Chi Minh City. Six Senses Con Dao is the island's honeymoon address. Con Dao's calm season runs from about March to June, so it suits a spring trip better than a winter one.

Honeymoon Tips

At Angkor, both of you need covered shoulders and knees. The rule is enforced at the main temples. Bring a hat, sunscreen and water. Plan the temples for early morning and late afternoon.

Use Grab in Ho Chi Minh City to avoid haggling. Keep your phone in a front pocket in busy areas.

On Phu Quoc, respect any flags on west coast beaches outside the dry season. Debris and rough surf are more common from May to October.

Dengue is present in both Vietnam and Cambodia. Use repellent at dawn and dusk. If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices for both countries before booking. Entry and visa rules depend on your citizenship and can change at short notice, so check the official government website before you book.

FAQ

Planning this trip

How many days do we need at Angkor?

Three nights in Siem Reap is ideal for a honeymoon. It gives you one sunrise at Angkor Wat, time for the Bayon and Ta Prohm, a Tonle Sap boat trip and afternoons by the pool. A three-day pass covers the main temples comfortably without exhausting you in the heat.

Can we fly directly from Siem Reap to Phu Quoc?

Most routes connect through Ho Chi Minh City. The Siem Reap leg and the Phu Quoc leg each take about an hour. Book with a sensible connection time and check baggage limits. Starting in Ho Chi Minh City means you know the airport by the time you pass through again.

Is Phu Quoc good for a honeymoon?

Yes, especially from November to April. Phu Quoc has long sunset beaches, calm water in the dry season and some of Vietnam's best resorts, including the JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay and La Veranda. It is less polished than Bali or the Maldives but excellent value.

Why start in Ho Chi Minh City?

Vietnam Airlines has flown nonstop from San Francisco to Ho Chi Minh City. The city also has many one-stop options from the US. Starting here also gives you a lively, easy first two nights before the early starts at Angkor. It is the natural hub for both onward flights.

What should we wear at Angkor?

Both of you need shoulders and knees covered at the main temples. Light, breathable trousers or a long skirt and a T-shirt or linen shirt work well. Wear comfortable shoes with grip for steep stone steps. Bring a hat and plenty of water for the heat.
