At a glance

Five nights on Lhaviyani Atoll, a 35 to 40 minute seaplane north of Malé, for reef sharks, mantas and dinner under the sea, then four nights at a speedboat resort on South Malé Atoll, close to the airport for an easy last day. It suits couples who want two different Maldives moods without leaving the country. Go from December to April for the calmest seas.

A week or more in one Maldives resort can start to blur. Splitting the stay between two resorts gives you two kinds of villa, two sets of reefs and two moods, for the price of one extra transfer.

The order matters. You start far from the airport, on Lhaviyani Atoll, about 35 to 40 minutes north of Malé by seaplane. Seaplanes fly only in daylight, so this is the leg that needs the most careful timing. It is easier to manage on arrival than on departure. Five nights there give you shark channels, manta cleaning stations, sandbank picnics and, at Hurawalhi, dinner inside a glass room on the seabed.

Then you move to South Malé Atoll, a 30 to 45 minute speedboat ride from the airport. Boats run day and night, so your last morning is relaxed whatever time your flight leaves. Four nights there finish the trip with a different style of stay, from COMO Cocoa Island's boat-shaped overwater villas to the pool villas and treetop dining of the Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi.

Day by day

Days 1–3: Arrive on Lhaviyani Atoll

Land at Velana International Airport (MLE) after connecting through Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi, Istanbul or Europe. Your resort's team meets you in arrivals and takes you to the seaplane lounge for the flight north. If your flight lands after mid-afternoon, plan a night near the airport and continue in the morning.

Spend day 2 doing nothing. Swim off your villa deck, nap and watch the lagoon change color through the day.

On day 3, snorkel the house reef with the resort's marine team, then try the shipwreck snorkel at The Shipyard, where two old wrecks rise from the water. In the evening, take a dolphin cruise at sunset, when spinner dolphins often leap beside the boat.

Days 4–5: Mantas, Sharks and the Undersea Dinner

On day 4, take a boat to a manta cleaning station such as Fushivaru Thila, where mantas visit from around May to November. In the drier months, divers can join the shark drift at Kuredu Express, one of the best channel dives in the area. Snorkelers can join the boat and watch reef life in shallower water.

On day 5, book a private sandbank picnic, then make it your splurge night. At Hurawalhi, dinner at the 5.8 Undersea Restaurant puts you in a glass-walled room more than five meters below the surface, with fish and rays drifting past your table. Eating a long tasting menu together under the sea is the romantic moment of Lhaviyani. Book it well ahead, since it seats only a few couples.

Days 6–9: South Malé Atoll

On day 6, take the seaplane back to Malé, then your second resort's speedboat south, 30 to 45 minutes. The whole move takes about half a day. Ask both resorts to coordinate, so you are not left waiting at the airport.

On day 7, drift-snorkel a reef channel with a guide, letting the current carry you past schools of fish and turtles. In the afternoon, book an overwater spa ritual.

On day 8, take a boat south to Vaavu Atoll to snorkel with gentle nurse sharks, or stay put and read on your deck.

Keep day 9 slow. At Waldorf Astoria Ithaafushi, book a treetop dinner in a bamboo pod. At COMO Cocoa Island, walk to the end of the sandbank at sunset with a drink. Standing on that thin strip of sand with water on both sides is the romantic moment of South Malé.

Day 10: Home from Malé

The speedboat to the airport takes 30 to 45 minutes and runs at any hour, so you can enjoy a full last morning and a late lunch even with an evening flight. That is the main advantage of finishing on South Malé Atoll.

There are no nonstop flights from the Maldives to the US. Most couples connect through a Gulf hub such as Dubai, Doha or Abu Dhabi, or through Istanbul or Europe. A night in the Gulf breaks up the long trip home. Settle resort bills before you leave and keep passports in your hand luggage.

Getting Between Stops

Lhaviyani resorts use seaplanes of about 35 to 40 minutes from Malé. Seaplanes fly only in daylight. If your international flight lands late, stay near the airport and fly north the next morning.

The mid-trip move goes by seaplane back to Malé, then by speedboat to South Malé Atoll, 30 to 45 minutes. Both resorts book their own transfers, usually charged per person on top of the room rate. Share your flight details with both and ask them to coordinate times.

South Malé speedboats run day and night, which is why this route ends there. Very rough seas in the southwest monsoon can occasionally slow them. Once on each island, you walk, cycle or ride in a buggy.

Where to Stay

On Lhaviyani, Hurawalhi Island Resort is the honeymoon headliner: kid-free, with overwater and beach villas and the 5.8 Undersea Restaurant. Its sister Kudadoo Maldives Private Island is an all-inclusive overwater retreat. Six Senses Kanuhura has a wellness focus and a small private island for picnics. Komandoo Island Resort and Spa is small, kid-free and relaxed.

On South Malé Atoll, COMO Cocoa Island is the intimate choice, with 33 overwater villas, many shaped like traditional dhoni boats, along a boardwalk from a tiny island with a long sandbank. Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi is the glamorous choice, with around 120 pool villas across three islands, several restaurants, treetop dining pods and a large spa.

Pair contrasting styles, such as an overwater villa first and a beach or pool villa second.

When to Go

December to April is the dry northeast monsoon, with sunny skies, calm seas and the clearest water. It is also peak season, with steep rates and minimum stays over Christmas and New Year. April is often hot and very still.

May and October to November are shoulder months with good value and plenty of sunny days. From June to September, the southwest monsoon brings more wind and short, heavy showers, though rates drop.

The wetter months are manta season on Lhaviyani, roughly May to November, so divers and snorkelers who care most about mantas may prefer the shoulder months. Shark channel dives are usually best in the dry season.

Budget and Booking

Plan on roughly $1,000–3,500 or more a night for two, depending on the resort, villa type and meal plan. Seaplane transfers to Lhaviyani are usually charged per person and add a large amount. Speedboat transfers to South Malé cost less. All figures are approximate.

Book both resorts at the same time and confirm transfers in writing. Compare meal plans carefully, since food and drink at resort prices add up quickly. Ask about honeymoon extras.

Book the 5.8 Undersea Restaurant as soon as your Hurawalhi stay is confirmed. Add excursions such as manta trips, sandbank picnics, dolphin cruises and spa treatments, all priced at resort rates.

Make It Shorter or Longer

For seven days, do four nights on Lhaviyani and two on South Malé, or stay at a single resort if the second transfer feels like too much for a short trip.

With two weeks, stretch each stay to six nights. Or add a third, very different stay: a few nights in Sri Lanka at the start, in Galle or Kandy, which is about an hour and a half by air from Malé.

Another idea is two or three nights in Dubai on the way in, which helps with jet lag and adds a city to the trip. Keep South Malé as your final stop whatever you add, so the last day stays easy.

Honeymoon Tips

Tell both resorts you are on your honeymoon. Many add small extras. The second resort can welcome you as if the trip were starting again.

Pack reef-safe sunscreen, a rash guard and reef shoes. Never stand on coral and follow your guide's advice on currents, which can be strong in the channels.

On inhabited local islands, both of you should cover shoulders and knees. Alcohol is not served there. Resorts serve alcohol freely.

Dengue occurs in the Maldives, so use repellent at dawn and dusk. If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices before booking. Entry and visa rules depend on your citizenship and can change at short notice, so check the official government website before you book.

FAQ

Planning this trip

Is it worth splitting a Maldives honeymoon between two resorts?

For stays of eight nights or more, often yes. You get two styles of villa, two sets of reefs and a fresh welcome halfway through. The cost is an extra transfer and about half a day of travel. For a short trip, one resort is usually better.

Why go to the seaplane resort first?

Seaplanes fly only in daylight. Arriving at a seaplane resort first is easier to manage, since you can overnight near the airport if needed. Ending at a speedboat resort means you can leave at any hour, which takes the stress out of a late international flight home.

What is the 5.8 Undersea Restaurant?

It is the underwater restaurant at Hurawalhi Island Resort on Lhaviyani Atoll, a glass-walled room on the seabed reached by a spiral staircase from a jetty. It seats only a few tables, so book as soon as your stay is confirmed. It makes an obvious splurge night.

How long does it take to move between the two resorts?

About half a day. You take a seaplane of 35 to 40 minutes back to Malé, then a speedboat of 30 to 45 minutes to your South Malé resort, plus waiting time at the airport. Ask both resorts to coordinate so the connection is smooth.

When is the best time for a two-resort Maldives honeymoon?

December to April for calm seas and sunshine. May and October to November give better value with mostly good weather. If seeing mantas on Lhaviyani is the priority, aim for the shoulder months, since manta season runs from around May to November.
