JOALI Maldives is the Raa Atoll honeymoon resort for couples who want a design-forward splurge, where every villa has its own pool and the whole island doubles as a gallery. It sits on Muravandhoo island in the northern Maldives, about 45 minutes from Malé by seaplane and calls itself art-immersive: sculptures, installations and furniture by artists and designers appear along sandy paths, in restaurants and inside the villas.

There are 73 villas and residences, split between overwater villas on walkways across the lagoon and beach villas with deep private gardens. Dining runs from Saoke, a floating Japanese restaurant, to Italian at Bellinis and Levantine plates on the sand at TUH'U. For a celebration night, the resort sets up dinner for two in the Manta Treehouse.

It suits couples who appreciate art, architecture and very polished service and who are comfortable with top-tier Maldives prices. Families are welcome, so it is not a kid-free island. Couples who prefer a barefoot, rustic style or a lower budget should look at other Raa resorts, including the kid-free You and Me Maldives.

Highlights at a glance

  • 73 villas, every one with a private pool
  • Art installations across the island

  • About 45 minutes by seaplane from Malé

Why Couples Love JOALI

JOALI's appeal is how much thought has gone into every surface. Rather than a standard Maldives resort with a few paintings, the island was conceived with art at its core, from sculptures in the gardens to commissioned pieces inside the villas. Walking to dinner becomes a little exhibition and the resort's Artscape program explains what you are looking at.

The villas are generous. Even the entry Water Villa with Pool has about 100 square meters inside and 240 square meters in total, while beach villas sit on plots of 680 square meters or more. That space gives real privacy, which couples value on a honeymoon.

Service is the third pillar. Guests describe staff who anticipate needs without being intrusive, from arranging a sandbank picnic to setting up a surprise in the villa. The overall feel is luxurious but warm, with a playful streak in the design that keeps it from feeling stiff.

Villas to Book

All 73 villas and residences have private pools. For a couple, focus on the one-bedroom categories.

  • Water Villa with Pool: overwater, about 100 square meters inside and 240 in total, with the lagoon below.
  • Luxury Water Villa with Pool: adds a living room over the lagoon and a curated library, about 280 square meters in total.
  • Luxury Sunset Water Villa with Pool: the honeymoon favorite, with a 35-square-meter infinity pool and sunset views from bed and deck.
  • Beach Villa with Pool: a private beach garden of about 680 square meters, an infinity pool and art pieces.
  • Luxury Beach Villa with Pool: about 865 square meters in total, with a pool set among greenery and a separate living room.

Overwater for the classic Maldives view, beach for space and shade. The multi-bedroom villas and residences suit families and groups.

Food, Drink and the Spa

JOALI's dining program is one of the most varied in the northern Maldives. Saoke is a floating Japanese restaurant designed by Noriyoshi Muramatsu, with sushi, sake and teppanyaki seating on selected evenings. Vandhoo, set in a tropical garden, serves Southeast Asian, Chinese and Indian flavors for breakfast and dinner, with a notable wine cellar. Bellinis offers Italian fine dining and TUH'U brings Levantine cooking to tables on the sand under lit palms.

Mura Bar is the pool bar, with cabanas, sunset cocktails, live performances and a whisky and cigar lounge. La Joie makes artisanal chocolate and around 30 flavors of ice cream.

For a special night, book Destination Dining: a sandbank, the Chef's Garden or the Manta Treehouse, which is the resort's most romantic setting. The JOALI Spa and Wellness Centre offer a full treatment menu and JOALI BEING, the sister wellbeing island nearby, runs deeper programs.

Things to Do

The lagoon and house reef are the first draw, with snorkeling among turtles and reef fish and kayaks for gentle paddles. Raa Atoll also gives access to Hanifaru Bay in neighboring Baa Atoll during the manta season, roughly June to November, when large groups of mantas gather to feed. Ask the resort about trips and the rules for visiting this protected area.

On the island, activities include cycling, cocktail-making sessions, art talks and creative workshops. The resort hosts events and celebrations through the year, which can be fun but also mean busier periods, so check what is planned during your dates.

Sunset cruises, sandbank picnics and diving trips to nearby thilas fill the rest of the time. Visits to local islands can be arranged; dress modestly there with shoulders and knees covered. Mosquitoes can appear after rain and if you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices for the Maldives.

Getting There

International flights arrive at Velana International (MLE) in Malé. JOALI's team meets you and handles the seaplane transfer, a flight of about 45 minutes north to Raa Atoll with views over reefs and sandbanks. Seaplanes fly in daylight only, so late international arrivals may need a night near Malé first.

Seaplane transfers are charged per person and are a meaningful part of the total cost; JOALI sometimes includes them in seasonal offers, so watch for those. Luggage allowances on seaplanes are lower than on long-haul flights and soft bags are easier to manage.

Most US couples connect through a Middle Eastern hub such as Doha, Dubai or Abu Dhabi, or through Istanbul or a European city, to reach Malé. Build in rest time; the journey is long and the first day is best spent doing nothing at all.

Is It Worth It?

For couples who want one of the most design-led resorts in the Maldives, yes. Rates are approximate and vary greatly by season and villa, but entry Water Villas with Pool often start around $2,500 a night before seaplane transfers, meals and taxes. A week here is a major splurge.

What you get is space, a pool at every villa, an exceptional range of restaurants and an island that genuinely feels different from its neighbors. Service and attention to detail are consistently praised.

Pick elsewhere if you want a kid-free island, a barefoot rustic style or more modest prices. In Raa, You and Me Maldives is designed around couples and is kid-free, while Alila Kothaifaru offers clean modern design with a strong house reef. If your honeymoon priority is wellness rather than art and dining, JOALI BEING next door is the one to compare.

Is JOALI Maldives kid-free?

No. Families are welcome and some villas sleep two adults plus children, with larger residences for families. The island still feels calm because villas are spacious and spread out. Couples who want a kid-free resort in Raa Atoll should look at You and Me Maldives, which is designed around couples.

What makes JOALI art-immersive?

Art is built into the island's design rather than added later. Sculptures, installations and commissioned pieces by artists and designers appear along paths, in restaurants and inside the villas. The resort's Artscape program introduces the collection and walking between villa, spa and dinner becomes part of the experience.

How do we get to JOALI Maldives?

Fly into Velana International (MLE) in Malé, then take a seaplane of about 45 minutes north to Muravandhoo island in Raa Atoll. The resort arranges the transfer. Seaplanes fly only in daylight, so late international arrivals may need a night near Malé first.

What is the Manta Treehouse?

It is one of JOALI's Destination Dining settings, a treehouse where the resort serves private dinners for two with a tailored menu.
