Most Wailea resorts are built around the sand: big lobbies, bigger pools, kids racing to the waterslide. Hotel Wailea went the other way. Set on fifteen acres of garden on the slopes above the coast, it is an all-suite, kid-free retreat with just seventy-two rooms. It is also the only Relais & Châteaux property in Hawaii. The result feels less like a resort than a very well-staffed private estate where the loudest sound is the breeze moving through the palms.
For honeymooners, that quiet is the whole point. You get a spacious one-bedroom suite with a deep soaking tub, a lanai that frames the Pacific and a team that seems to remember your names before you've unpacked. Down the hill, the hotel sets up chairs and umbrellas for you on Wailea Beach; back up top, the dining program is good enough to keep you on property for dinner most nights, especially once you've booked the famous Treehouse table. Travel + Leisure readers voted it the top resort in Hawaii in 2022. It is easy to see why couples keep coming back for anniversaries.

- Private multi-course Treehouse dinner for two
- Roomy 720-square-foot suites with soaking tubs and big lanais

A Hilltop Above the Crowds
Hotel Wailea sits up the slope from the main resort strip. That elevation changes everything. The open-air lobby looks out across a broad sweep of coastline, with Kahoʻolawe, Lānaʻi and the little crescent of Molokini floating in the channel on clear days. Sunsets here are a nightly event, best watched with a drink in hand from the lobby or your own lanai.
The grounds are lush and deliberately unhurried: walking paths wind past waterfalls, koi ponds and plumeria toward a single pool ringed by cabanas and fire pits. Because the hotel was once a members-only club, it never had to be designed for crowds. It shows. There is no beachfront, which is the main trade-off, but the hotel's complimentary shuttle and beach valet make Wailea Beach feel like an extension of the property.
The Suites
Every room is a one-bedroom suite of roughly 720 square feet, which is generous by Maui standards. Interiors are calm and residential: white oak floors, neutral tones with coral accents, Big Island ʻōhiʻa wood cabinetry and handcrafted furniture that leans toward island craft rather than generic luxury. Each suite has a separate living room, a kitchenette with full-size appliances and a bathroom built for lingering, with a deep soaking tub and a limestone-lined shower.
The real living space is outside. Oversized lanais face either the gardens or the ocean and the difference matters: ocean-view and panoramic suites take in the full curve of the coast, while garden suites feel more secluded and private, with some opening straight onto terraces. If the view is the memory you want to bring home, book an ocean-view category and ask for a higher floor.
Dining for Two, Including the Treehouse
The Restaurant at Hotel Wailea is one of South Maui's destination dining rooms, serving island-to-table menus built on local farms, local fishermen and an on-site garden. It runs as a prix fixe experience with a choice of shorter or longer tasting menus. The open-air setting with ocean views and garden seating makes it romantic without trying too hard. Ask about the Kitchen Table if you two love watching chefs work.
The headline act, though, is the Treehouse: a private platform tucked up in the canopy where a single couple is served a multi-course dinner with a sunset Champagne toast and optional wine pairings. It books up well ahead, so reserve it when you book your room.
For lighter moments, the Birdcage lounge pairs inventive island cocktails with Japanese-inspired small plates, while the poolside Cabanas handle lunch, smoothies and cold-pressed juices. The kitchen will also pack a picnic basket for the beach.
Why guests fall for it
Wellness, Movement and Slow Mornings
Wellness at Hotel Wailea is woven into the day rather than parked in a giant spa complex. A complimentary class schedule includes yoga and even aerial silks. The 24-hour fitness studio is there if you want it. The pool area has a hot tub and fire pits for evenings when you would rather stay up the hill.
Massage is a highlight for couples, especially in-suite treatments that let you go straight from the table to the soaking tub. On select mornings the hotel takes guests out for outrigger canoe paddling off the beach, which in winter can turn into an impromptu whale-watching session as humpbacks surface in the channel. The overall pace encourages long breakfasts, late swims and the luxury of having nothing scheduled at all.
Experiences Worth Saying Yes To
The hotel leans into small, memorable add-ons rather than an activity desk with a hundred options. A few that suit honeymooners especially well:
- A spin along the coast in a reproduction 1957 Porsche 356 Speedster, top down
- Borrowing a Tesla house car or electric bikes to explore Wailea's shops, beaches and restaurants
- A tropical mixology class at the Cabanas, so you can recreate your favorite cocktail at home
- A couples' cooking session with the culinary team
- Sunset boat trips and seasonal canoe whale-watching arranged by the concierge
Beyond the property, you are well placed for Haleakalā sunrise, snorkeling at Molokini or the drive to Mākena's wild beaches.
Why Guests Fall in Love
Read through guest and critic feedback and the same themes come up again and again. Couples consistently describe the service as warm and personal, with staff greeting them by name and quietly anticipating what they need. The kid-free atmosphere earns constant praise: the pool is peaceful, the restaurant feels romantic and everyone there seems to be on the same wavelength.
The suites win points for their size, especially the bathrooms and the lanais. The views from the hillside are a recurring favorite. Diners rave about the Restaurant and often call the Treehouse the highlight of the entire trip. Many guests also mention the thoughtful perks, from the beach setup to the complimentary classes, that make the stay feel generous rather than nickel-and-dimed.
Good to Know
Hotel Wailea is not on the sand. Wailea Beach is reached by the hotel shuttle in a few minutes, or by a walk of roughly twenty minutes downhill. The beach valet has chairs and umbrellas ready. If waking up to waves at your door is non-negotiable, this is something to weigh.
The property is strictly for grown-ups; age policies have been described in different ways by different sources, so confirm the minimum age directly if you are traveling with younger family members for a post-wedding gathering. Rates generally sit in the four figures per night in high season. The Treehouse is priced separately. Pool cabanas are offered first come, first served, with the option to reserve one for a fee. Kahului Airport is roughly 30 to 40 minutes away by car; a rental car is useful for day trips but not essential for time on property.
Insider tips
- Reserve the Treehouse dinner at the same time you book your suite; it seats one couple at a time and fills fast.
- Ocean-view suites on upper levels deliver the most dramatic sunset views from the lanai.
- Visit between December and April and join the morning canoe paddle for a chance to see humpback whales up close.
- Order a picnic basket and take the shuttle to Wailea Beach for an easy, romantic lunch on the sand.
