Horizon by Ongava is the most private stay on the edge of Etosha National Park. It has just three thatched villas on a ridge in the Ongava Game Reserve, each with a sitting room and fireplace, a viewing deck and its own pool above a waterhole. The lodge reopened after a full renovation and every booking comes with a private guide and vehicle, so your days run to your own schedule.

The reserve sits on the southern boundary of Etosha, close to the Andersson gate. That gives you two kinds of safari: guided drives and walks on a private reserve, where night drives are allowed and excursions into the national park itself, with its salt pan and busy waterholes. The Ongava reserve is also known for its rhinos.

It suits couples who want privacy, flexibility and a high level of service and who are happy to pay for it. It suits less well those on a budget or who enjoy a sociable lodge with shared dinners. Two or three nights is a good stay, often after Damaraland or Sossusvlei.

Highlights at a glance

  • Just three villas on a ridge-top
  • Private pool and viewing deck above a waterhole
  • Sole-use guide and vehicle included
  • Night drives on a private reserve
  • Easy access to Etosha via the Andersson gate

Why Couples Love Horizon by Ongava

Privacy is the main reason. With only three villas, you will rarely see other guests and the sole-use guide and vehicle mean you set the pace. You can leave before dawn to beat the crowds to an Etosha waterhole, or linger over breakfast and head out later. The choice is yours.

The view is the second reason. The villas look across the plains from a ridge, with a waterhole below. You can watch elephants, giraffes and antelope come to drink from your deck, sometimes from the pool. At night, the sky is huge and dark.

Then there is the access. Etosha is one of Africa's great parks and the private reserve next to it gives you night drives and walks that are not allowed inside the park. Combining both makes for a rich few days.

The Villas

There are three thatched villas, each designed for two guests, with a king bed or twin beds.

Every villa has a spacious sitting room with a fireplace, which is welcome on cold winter nights from about June to August. The bathroom has a bath with good amenities. Outside, a private viewing deck with a sundowner lounge looks over the waterhole and a private pool gives you somewhere to cool off on hot afternoons.

In-villa dining can be arranged, so you can eat dinner on your deck with the waterhole lit below. For a honeymoon, that is a strong reason to book here rather than a larger lodge. Ask about children's policies if that matters to you; with only three villas, the lodge rarely feels busy. Mention your honeymoon when you book.

Food, Drink and the Spa

All meals are included, along with local drinks. Premium imported brands and champagne are extra. Meals can be served in your villa or arranged elsewhere, so a private dinner is easy.

Expect fresh, well-made food with Namibian ingredients, from game meat to local vegetables, with plenty of choice for different diets. Tell the lodge about any needs in advance, since supplies come from far away.

The Ongava reserve offers spa treatments, a welcome break between early mornings and long drives. There is also a Discovery Center about the reserve's conservation work and a boutique with Namibian crafts. Most couples find that the deck, the pool and the waterhole fill the hours between drives.

Things to Do

Activities are included and planned around you, thanks to the private guide and vehicle.

  • Game drives on the Ongava reserve, where you might see rhinos, lions, elephants and antelope.
  • Night safaris on the private reserve, a chance to see nocturnal animals that are hard to find in Etosha.
  • Walking approaches to big game with experienced guides.
  • Full or half-day excursions into Etosha National Park through the nearby Andersson gate, with stops at waterholes and views over the salt pan.
  • Birdwatching and visits to the Discovery Center.

Dry season, from about May to October, brings the best game viewing as animals gather at waterholes. Malaria risk is lower than in much of Africa but present, especially in the wet season, so ask a travel health clinic for advice. If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices.

Getting There

The Ongava Game Reserve is on the southern edge of Etosha, about five hours by road from Windhoek Hosea Kutako Airport (WDH) on good tar roads. Many couples drive themselves as part of a Namibia self-drive, often after Damaraland.

The faster option is a light-aircraft flight to the Ongava airstrip. Airstrip transfers and passenger fees are included in the rate. Luggage limits on small planes are strict, so pack soft bags.

A classic route combines Sossusvlei, Swakopmund or Damaraland and Etosha over ten to fourteen nights. Horizon works well as the final safari stop, where you can relax with a private guide after days of driving.

Is It Worth It?

For couples who want a private safari next to Etosha, yes. Few lodges in Namibia give you a villa with its own pool above a waterhole, a guide and vehicle for your sole use and a fully inclusive rate that covers park fees and airstrip transfers. The flexibility alone can transform a stay in a park where most visitors queue at the same waterholes.

The trade-off is price. Horizon costs far more than the state rest camps inside Etosha, which offer simple chalets and famous floodlit waterholes for a fraction of the rate. Couples on a tighter budget can split their nights, with one at Okaukuejo for the waterhole and one or two on a private reserve. Those who want a sociable atmosphere might prefer a larger lodge with shared dinners, such as Ongava Lodge on the same ridge. If privacy and control over your days matter most, Horizon is hard to match.

Insider tips

  1. Use your private guide to reach Etosha waterholes before the crowds.
  2. Book in-villa dining at least one night to watch the waterhole after dark.
  3. Combine a night drive on the reserve with a full day in Etosha.
  4. Fly to the Ongava airstrip if you want to skip the long drive from Windhoek.

FAQ

Horizon by Ongava questions, answered

How many villas does Horizon by Ongava have?

Three. Each thatched villa sleeps two, with a king or twin beds, a sitting room with a fireplace, a bath, a private viewing deck and a private pool. The lodge sleeps six guests in total, so it always feels quiet.

What is included at Horizon by Ongava?

The rate includes accommodation, all meals, a sole-use guide and vehicle, a personal butler, park fees, laundry, local drinks, airstrip transfers and airfield passenger fees. Premium imported spirits and champagne cost extra. Confirm details when booking, since packages can change.

Can we visit Etosha National Park from Horizon?

Yes. The Ongava reserve borders the southern edge of Etosha near the Andersson gate. With your private guide and vehicle, you can spend half or full days in the park, visiting waterholes and the salt pan, then return to the reserve for night drives.

When is the best time to visit Etosha?

The dry season, from about May to October, is best for game viewing because animals gather at waterholes. June to August is cooler, with cold mornings. The wet season, from about November to April, is greener and quieter, with newborn animals and migratory birds.

How much does Horizon by Ongava cost?

Ongava publishes its rates in seasonal rate sheets rather than on the villa page. As a rough estimate, expect from about $3,000 a night for two in quieter months, fully inclusive, with higher prices in peak season. Treat this figure as approximate and confirm with Ongava for your dates.
