Good to know: Closed since January 2025 for a full rebuild and expected to reopen in January 2027. Check dates with the lodge before planning.

&Beyond calls it the game lodge at the top of the world. The description is hard to argue with. The lodge sits on the very rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, the world's largest intact, unflooded volcanic caldera, with the crater floor spread out some 2,000 feet below like a living diorama. Morning mist pours over the rim and flamingos turn a soda lake pink in the distance. From your suite you can trace the paths of buffalo and elephants across grassland that has been called Africa's Garden of Eden.

For decades this lodge was famous for its theatrical interiors and its legendary butler service, which made it one of the most photographed safari lodges on the continent. &Beyond has since undertaken a major rebuild of the property, so before you book, confirm the current opening status, suite layout and design details directly with &Beyond or your safari specialist. What has not changed is the reason to come: a position right on the rim, privileged early access to the crater floor and some of the most concentrated wildlife viewing in East Africa.

Highlights at a glance

  • Location right on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater
  • Early access to one of Africa's densest wildlife areas
  • Excellent chances to see endangered black rhino
  • Signature personal butler service
  • Inclusive stays with meals and most drinks covered
  • Recently rebuilt by &Beyond; confirm the new layout before booking

On the Edge of the Caldera

The Ngorongoro Crater formed when a massive volcano collapsed roughly two to three million years ago. Today its floor covers about 100 square miles and sits around 5,900 feet above sea level, while the forested rim rises far higher. Because the lodge sits on that rim, suites and common areas alike look far across the crater, with the light changing hour by hour.

The altitude brings a climate unlike the rest of a typical safari. Days can be pleasantly mild, but mornings and evenings on the rim are often cool, even cold, with mist rolling in from the forest. Fireplaces, warm layers and hot drinks become part of the romance, a cozy contrast to the sunny plains below.

Suites and Butler Service

Historically, the lodge has been organized into a few small camps strung along the rim, each with its own lounge and dining area and a modest number of suites. That layout gave guests the intimacy of a small camp with the polish of a grand lodge. A personal butler looked after each suite.

Because the lodge has been rebuilt, the exact suite design, number of rooms and amenities may differ from older photos and reviews you find online. Ask &Beyond for current images and floor plans. Request a suite with an unobstructed crater view, which is the experience you are traveling for. Whatever the new look, expect the lodge's hallmark: deeply personal, attentive service from a team devoted to making your stay feel special.

Dining High Above the Crater

Stays at &Beyond's lodges are typically inclusive of meals and most drinks. Dining here is a highlight. Expect leisurely breakfasts before or after your crater descent, picnic lunches packed for a full day on the crater floor and candlelit dinners as the temperature drops on the rim.

Many couples arrange a private dinner for a special evening, or a sundowner with the crater as a backdrop. Tell your butler or host that you are on your honeymoon; teams at lodges like this are known for small surprises, from a bath drawn with rose petals to a quiet table set apart from other guests. Dietary needs are easily accommodated with notice.

Why guests fall for it

Sunrise views over the mist-filled crater
Attentive, personal butler service

A rare feeling of occasion

Into the Crater

The main event is the descent to the crater floor. Wildlife here is astonishingly dense: tens of thousands of large animals, including wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, gazelles and hippos, plus one of the highest concentrations of lions ever recorded. The crater is also one of the best places in Tanzania to see the critically endangered black rhino, whose numbers have recovered from just over a dozen in the early 1990s to several dozen today.

  • Head down early, when the light is soft and vehicles are few
  • Spend a full day with a picnic lunch to explore the Lerai Forest and Lake Magadi
  • Watch for flamingos on the alkaline lake and elephants in the forest

The number of vehicles allowed on the floor at any time is limited and park authorities set fees per vehicle and visit. Your guide will help plan the most rewarding route.

Beyond the Crater Floor

The wider Ngorongoro Conservation Area is a UNESCO World Heritage site recognized for both nature and culture. Many guests pair crater game drives with a visit to a Maasai community on the highlands, where livestock and people have shared the land with wildlife for generations.

History lovers can make an excursion to Olduvai Gorge, one of the world's most important prehistoric sites, where Mary and Louis Leakey's work uncovered early human ancestors. Walks along the crater rim and visits to coffee farms around Karatu are other gentle ways to fill an afternoon. The lodge's guides can tailor these outings so you have time to rest between adventures.

Why Couples Remember It

Over the years, the themes in guest feedback have been remarkably consistent. People describe the view from the rim as one of the great sights of their lives, especially at sunrise when mist fills the crater. The butler service is a near-constant source of praise, with couples recounting thoughtful gestures that made them feel completely cared for.

Guides earn high marks for finding rhino and lions on the crater floor and for planning the day around the best light and fewest vehicles. And many travelers single out the feeling of occasion, that this is a rare place to celebrate something big. Those are strengths the rebuilt lodge is designed to carry forward.

Good to Know

Because of the rebuild, verify opening dates and booking availability with &Beyond before locking in your itinerary. Most couples spend two nights here, enough for a full day in the crater, as part of a northern circuit safari combined with the Serengeti and a Zanzibar beach finale.

Pack warm layers; nights on the rim can be chilly year-round. Conservation area entry and crater service fees are set by the authorities and may be charged separately from your lodge rate, so ask what is included. Access is by road from Arusha or via a light-aircraft flight to the Lake Manyara airstrip, with strict luggage limits on small planes. Consult a travel doctor about malaria prevention before you travel.

Insider tips

  1. Confirm the lodge's post-rebuild opening status and suite configuration with &Beyond before booking flights.
  2. Plan a full day in the crater with a picnic lunch and leave early to beat the vehicle traffic.
  3. Pack a warm jacket and layers; mornings and evenings on the rim are cool.
  4. Book two nights so you have time for both the crater floor and a cultural visit or Olduvai Gorge.
