Awaroa Lodge is the best way to spend a night inside Abel Tasman National Park rather than on its edge. It sits near Awaroa Bay, one of the park's widest golden beaches. There is no road to it. You arrive by water taxi, by light plane or on foot along the Abel Tasman Coast Track, which means the evenings belong to the guests and a handful of hikers.

The lodge is relaxed rather than luxurious. Rooms are set among gardens and native bush. The Superior Suites are built out over the wetlands with private decks. The Harakeke Restaurant cooks with produce from the lodge's own organic garden. In summer there is wood-fired pizza outside.

It suits couples who like walking, kayaking and swimming more than spa days and room service. Book a Superior Suite, plan to arrive by boat and walk out (or the reverse). Give yourselves at least two nights so you get one full day with nowhere to be. The lodge opens from spring to autumn, roughly October to April. It closes over the winter.

Highlights at a glance

  • No road access inside Abel Tasman National Park

  • Glowworms and dark skies at night

Why Couples Love Awaroa Lodge

The arrival sets the tone. Water taxis run up the coast from Marahau or Kaiteriteri past granite headlands and green coves, then drop you near Awaroa. From there it is a short walk to the lodge through bush loud with birdsong.

Once the last day walkers leave, the area goes very quiet. You can walk onto Awaroa Bay at low tide and watch the inlet empty into a huge sweep of sand, then return for dinner with only the sound of tui and bellbirds.

The setting has a story too. Awaroa Beach itself was bought by thousands of New Zealanders through a crowdfunding campaign and added to the national park. Couples who care about nature tend to love that the lodge sits in a protected landscape with no cars, no traffic and very little light at night.

Rooms and Suites to Book

Rooms come in a few types:

  • Standard and Standard Plus rooms with a king bed, an ensuite and a balcony
  • Family rooms with extra beds and a dining table
  • Superior Suites with a king bed, a walk-in shower and a deck built over the wetlands

For a honeymoon, book a Superior Suite. The decks look over reeds and native bush, the suites feel more private and the wetland setting is lovely in the early morning, when the mist lifts and the birds start calling.

Rooms are comfortable and simple, without big tubs or plunge pools. They are designed for people who spend the day outside and come back for a hot shower and a good bed. Summer weekends and the December to February holidays book up early, so reserve as soon as you have dates.

Food, Drink and Downtime

The Harakeke Restaurant is the heart of the lodge, serving seasonal dishes built around vegetables and herbs from the organic garden, along with local fish and lamb. Since there is nowhere else to eat, it is worth booking dinner as part of your stay. The wine list leans toward Nelson and Marlborough, which are close by.

In summer, the outdoor pizzeria fires up for casual lunches and early evenings, popular with walkers passing through. Later the lounge, library and bar settle into a quiet routine.

The lodge also has a small day spa focused on massage, a welcome treat after a day of paddling or walking. Book treatments ahead in peak season. Beyond that, downtime here means swimming, reading in the sun and watching the tide come in.

Things to Do

Abel Tasman is made for active couples. Almost everything starts from the lodge door:

  • Walk sections of the Abel Tasman Coast Track, north to Totaranui or south toward Bark Bay
  • Kayak the coast with a guide and look for fur seals around Tonga Island
  • Cross the Awaroa Inlet on foot at low tide, checking the tide times first
  • See glowworms on an evening walk near the lodge
  • Stargaze on clear nights, with almost no light pollution

A classic plan is to take a water taxi in, spend two nights and then walk part of the coast track out to a pickup point. Your bags can travel by boat. Swimming is best from December to March, when the water is warmest. Sandflies are common at dusk, so pack repellent for both of you.

Getting There

Fly into Nelson Airport (NSN), which has regular flights from Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. From Nelson it is about an hour by car to Marahau or Kaiteriteri, where water taxis leave for the park. The boat ride to Awaroa usually takes about an hour, depending on stops and sea conditions.

Scenic flights from Nelson or Motueka can also land nearby, which turns the arrival into a sightseeing trip. Walkers can reach the lodge on the Abel Tasman Coast Track, usually over two or three days from the southern end.

Plan your arrival and departure around boat schedules and tides, since the Awaroa Inlet can only be crossed on foot near low tide. The lodge can help coordinate water taxis and luggage. Leave your car in secure parking at Marahau or Kaiteriteri.

Is It Worth It?

For couples who want the park itself rather than a view of it, yes. Nowhere else lets you wake beside one of Abel Tasman's best beaches without camping or carrying a pack. The prices are reasonable for a lodge with no road access. The Superior Suites feel special without being extravagant.

It is not a luxury lodge in the style of Queenstown or Northland. There is no pool, no butler service and limited Wi-Fi and phone coverage. If you need a spa resort or fine dining every night, you may be happier in Nelson with day trips into the park.

Couples who want everything organized can also look at guided walks with private beachfront lodges included. For a simple, beautiful and genuinely remote stay, Awaroa Lodge is the honeymoon choice in Abel Tasman.

There is no road. Most guests take a water taxi from Marahau or Kaiteriteri, about an hour from Nelson by car. You can also arrive by light plane from Nelson or Motueka, or walk in on the Abel Tasman Coast Track. The lodge can help you coordinate boats and luggage transfers.

The lodge operates from spring to autumn, roughly October to April. It closes for the winter. December to March is peak season, with the warmest water and the longest days. October, November and April are quieter and often cheaper, though the weather is more changeable.

Which room should we book at Awaroa Lodge for a honeymoon?

Book a Superior Suite. These are built over the wetlands, with a king bed, a walk-in shower and a private deck. They feel more secluded than the standard rooms and the views of reeds and native bush are lovely at dawn. Reserve early for summer weekends and holidays.

Are meals included at Awaroa Lodge?

Standard rates are generally for the room only. Meals are served at the Harakeke Restaurant and the summer outdoor pizzeria, which are the only places to eat nearby. Book dinner when you reserve your room. Check whether any packages bundle breakfast or dinner for your dates.

How much does Awaroa Lodge cost?

As an approximate guide, published rates run from about NZ$300 to NZ$680 a night in the low season and about NZ$400 to NZ$900 in high season, depending on the room. That is roughly US$170 to US$510. Water taxis and meals cost extra, so budget for both.
