Te Anau Lodge is the most characterful place to stay in Te Anau and one of the best-value honeymoon stays in Fiordland. It is a 1936 convent that was moved to its current site and carefully restored. The rooms are named after parts of a church, breakfast is served in the old chapel and afternoon tea comes with a glass of wine or beer. It sits on a quiet street about 15 minutes' walk from town, with views across Lake Te Anau to the Murchison and Luxmore ranges from many rooms.

The lodge has nine ensuite bedrooms plus a stand-alone retreat. It is a bed and breakfast rather than a hotel, so there is no restaurant, spa or pool, but the hosts are attentive and the library lounge is a cozy place to plan the next day.

It suits couples who want warmth and personality without paying luxury lodge prices, especially as a base for Milford Sound, Doubtful Sound and the Kepler Track. Book The Cathedral or The Vestry, the two deluxe rooms with lake views and a bath. Rooms are reserved for guests aged 12 and over.

Highlights at a glance

  • A restored 1936 convent with nine ensuite rooms
  • Breakfast served in the old chapel
  • Complimentary afternoon tea with wine or beer
  • Lake and mountain views from the deluxe rooms
  • Walking distance to Te Anau's restaurants

Why Couples Love Te Anau Lodge

The building is the star. A former convent has a calm, unusual atmosphere: high ceilings, polished wood and a sense of history in every corridor. The owners have leaned into the theme with humor, from room names to breakfast in the chapel, without turning it into a gimmick.

The daily rhythm suits a honeymoon. You set off for Milford or a hike after a cooked breakfast and come back to afternoon tea with slices, biscuits and a drink. Then you can settle into the library or the balcony before walking into town for dinner.

The setting is quiet and residential, a short distance from the lakefront and Te Anau's restaurants. There is a sunny courtyard and a giant lawn chess set for lazy afternoons. Most guests leave talking about the hosts, who know the region well and are generous with advice.

Rooms to Book

The lodge has nine ensuite bedrooms, each with its own name:

  • The Cathedral and The Vestry, the deluxe rooms, with lake and mountain views, a bath and a shower
  • Mother Superior's Room and The Belfry, the superior rooms, with mountain or lake views
  • Standard rooms such as The Chapter Room, The Baptistry, The Sacristy and The Music Room
  • The Bishop's Retreat, a stand-alone unit a few steps from the lodge with a small kitchenette

For a honeymoon, book The Cathedral first, then The Vestry. Both have super king beds, a bath and the views across Lake Te Anau. The Belfry is a good alternative if the deluxe rooms are taken.

The Bishop's Retreat gives you extra privacy and a kitchenette, useful for a late snack after a long day on the road.

Food and Drink

Breakfast is included and served each morning in the lodge's chapel, with a choice of continental or cooked options. It is a hearty start before a long day out, so ask for an early sitting if you are heading to Milford.

Afternoon tea is also included, with tea, coffee, home baking and a drink of wine, beer or another light refreshment. It is a lovely ritual to return to after a cruise or a hike.

There is no restaurant at the lodge. Te Anau has a good range of places to eat along the lakefront and main street, from relaxed cafes to restaurants serving venison, lamb and blue cod. It is about a 15 minute walk, so you can leave the car behind and enjoy a glass of wine with dinner.

Things to Do

Te Anau is the gateway to most of Fiordland:

  • Drive the Milford Road to Milford Sound for a cruise or kayak
  • Take an overnight cruise on Doubtful Sound, reached across Lake Manapouri
  • Visit the Te Anau glowworm caves by boat in the evening
  • Walk part of the Kepler Track along the lakeshore
  • Fly over the fiords on a scenic flight from Te Anau

The lakefront walk from town is pleasant at sunset, with views across to the mountains. Couples who want a gentler day can rent bikes or simply relax by the lake.

Sandflies are common near the water, especially at dusk, so pack repellent. Weather changes fast, so keep one day flexible for cruises or flights that might be postponed.

Getting There

Fly into Queenstown Airport (ZQN) and drive about two hours to Te Anau. The route passes along the southern end of Lake Wakatipu and through farmland, with a few good stops for coffee. You can also arrive from Dunedin or Invercargill, each about two to two and a half hours away.

Te Anau Lodge is at 52 Howden Street, about 15 minutes' walk from the town center and the lake. There is parking on site.

Milford Sound is about two hours further by car along State Highway 94. Leave early, fill up with fuel in Te Anau and check the official road status in winter, when the Milford Road can require chains or close for avalanche control. Doubtful Sound cruises depart from Manapouri, about 20 minutes south of Te Anau.

Is It Worth It?

For couples who value character and good hosts over luxury facilities, absolutely. Rates are a fraction of Fiordland's luxury lodges and include breakfast and afternoon tea, which is excellent value in a region where dining is expensive. The convent setting makes the stay memorable in a way that most motels cannot.

It is not a resort. There is no restaurant, spa or pool. The standard rooms are simple. Couples who want their own lodge restaurant and big timber spaces should book Fiordland Lodge just north of town.

If you want to wake at Milford Sound itself, add a night at Milford Sound Lodge. As a warm, friendly base for exploring Fiordland without spending heavily, Te Anau Lodge is one of the easiest recommendations on the South Island.

FAQ

Te Anau Lodge questions, answered

Is Te Anau Lodge really a former convent?

Yes. The lodge is a 1936 convent that was relocated and restored as a bed and breakfast. Many features reflect its history, from rooms named The Cathedral, The Vestry and The Belfry to breakfast served in the former chapel. It keeps a calm, quiet atmosphere that suits couples.

How much does Te Anau Lodge cost?

As an approximate guide, published double room tariffs run from about NZ$300 to NZ$400 a night including taxes, which is roughly US$170 to US$230. That includes breakfast and afternoon tea. Rates vary by room and date, so check availability directly with the lodge.

Which room is best for a honeymoon?

The Cathedral and The Vestry are the deluxe rooms, with super king beds, a bath and a shower. Both look across Lake Te Anau to the Luxmore and Murchison ranges. The Belfry is a good second choice with lake views. The Bishop's Retreat offers extra privacy in a separate unit.

Does Te Anau Lodge have a restaurant?

No. The lodge serves breakfast and afternoon tea only. For dinner, walk about 15 minutes into Te Anau, which has cafes and restaurants along the lakefront and main street. Booking ahead is wise in summer, when Te Anau fills with travelers heading to Milford Sound.

Is Te Anau Lodge suitable for children?

Rooms are reserved for guests aged 12 and over, so it is quieter than many family hotels, though it is not formally kid-free. That makes it a calm choice for couples. Ask the lodge if you have questions about specific dates or room types.
