Denis Private Island

Twenty-three cottages, one coral island and no phone signal

Denis Private Island is the Seychelles honeymoon for couples who want a whole island to themselves without paying the very top private-island prices. It is a flat coral island of about 375 acres, roughly 37 miles north of Mahé, with a single resort of 23 cottages and one villa spread along the beach. There is no mobile signal, no in-room internet and no TV. Wi-Fi works only around the restaurant, bar and reception, which is exactly why many couples choose it.

The cottages are spacious, with open-air bathrooms, outdoor showers in walled courtyards and verandas facing the sea. Days revolve around the beach, the reef and the island itself: cycle the sandy tracks, meet giant tortoises, snorkel off the shore or head out fishing over the drop-off. A working farm supplies much of what you eat and conservation projects have brought rare birds back to the native forest.

It suits couples who want barefoot simplicity, nature and genuine quiet. It is not the place for a lively bar scene, multiple restaurants or round-the-clock connectivity. Families do come, especially in school holidays, but with fewer than two dozen units the island never feels crowded.

Highlights at a glance

  • Only 23 cottages and one villa on a 375-acre coral island
  • No mobile signal or in-room internet
  • Beachfront Spa Cottages with private massage pavilions
  • Farm-to-table food from the island's own farm
  • Giant tortoises, rare birds and reef snorkeling

Why Couples Choose Denis Island

Unlike the granite islands of the inner Seychelles, Denis is low and sandy, so the beach runs right around it. You can walk the whole circuit in a couple of hours and stop to swim wherever the water looks best. The lagoon side is calm for snorkeling, while the outer side catches more breeze. With so few guests, you will often have long stretches of sand to yourselves.

The lack of connectivity is a feature. Couples describe putting their phones in a drawer on day one and not missing them. The island has also been the focus of long-running conservation work, with programs for sea turtles and native birds such as the Seychelles warbler and fody and the farm keeps the kitchen supplied with fresh produce, eggs and dairy. It feels more like staying on someone's well-run estate than at a resort and the pace slows accordingly. The island has also been recognized with Two Michelin Keys.

Cottages and the Beach Villa

All accommodation sits on or just behind the beach, set back in the shade of trees and well spaced for privacy. Every unit has an open-air bathroom, an outdoor shower in a walled courtyard, air conditioning, a Nespresso machine and a sitting area.

  • Beach Cottages, about 90 square meters, have private beachfront and a sea-facing veranda with loungers. There are only three.
  • Deluxe Beach Cottages, about 110 square meters, add a sala and daybed in the front garden. These are the solid honeymoon choice.
  • Beachfront Spa Cottages, about 150 square meters, include a king bed and a private massage pavilion, so treatments come to you.
  • The Beach Villa, about 325 square meters, has a plunge pool, two outdoor showers, a dining pavilion and a wraparound veranda.

For a honeymoon, a Beachfront Spa Cottage is the sweet spot of space, privacy and price. Book the single Beach Villa early if a private pool matters.

Food, Drink and the Spa

There is one restaurant and one bar and the kitchen leans on the island's own farm. Guests describe a mix of buffet and à la carte meals, plenty of fresh fish, good vegetarian options and the occasional dinner set up on the beach. Ask for a private beach dinner one evening; with so few guests it is easy to arrange.

The spa offers massages and body treatments and the Beachfront Spa Cottages have their own massage pavilion, which is ideal if you prefer treatments without walking anywhere. In-cottage massages are available for other categories too.

Meal plans and inclusions can change, so ask exactly what your rate covers for food, drinks and activities before you book. The island charges a small Seychelles environmental levy per guest per night at check-out. Bring any snacks or specific toiletries you cannot live without, since there are no shops.

Things to Do

Bicycles are the way to get around, along sandy tracks that cut through the forest. Ride to the old lighthouse, visit the farm and stop to meet the giant tortoises that roam parts of the island. Guided nature walks explain the conservation work and help you spot rare birds.

In the water, snorkel the reef on the lagoon side or join a dive trip. Denis sits right on the edge of the Seychelles Bank, where the seabed drops steeply into deep water, which makes it one of the country's better spots for sport fishing. Even non-anglers often enjoy a morning out on the boat.

Otherwise, the main activity is choosing which beach to lie on. Sun is strong on a flat coral island, so use reef-safe sunscreen, carry water on bike rides and watch for currents on the outer side. Mosquitoes appear at dusk and if you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices.

Getting There

Fly into Seychelles International Airport (SEZ) on Mahé. The island books your return flight on its small charter aircraft automatically once your stay is confirmed and the hop north takes about 30 minutes. Flights do not run every day, so plan your arrival around the island's schedule, which may mean a night on Mahé on the way in or out.

The aircraft is small, roughly 10 seats and the luggage limit is strict at 15 kg per person. Soft bags are best. Extra luggage can be stored at Mahé airport, which is useful if you are combining Denis with a longer Seychelles trip.

Most long-haul routes from the US connect through the Gulf or Europe. Bring your passport, plus whatever you need for a phone-free week: books, a camera and offline maps. Entry and visa rules depend on your citizenship and can change at short notice, so check the official government website before you book.

Is It Worth It?

For couples who want a private-island feel without paying North Island or Six Senses Zil Pasyon rates, Denis is one of the best values in the Seychelles. The cottages are generous, the beach is all around you and the absence of signal makes it easier to switch off than almost anywhere else.

It is not cheap, though and the simplicity will not suit everyone. One restaurant, no shops and limited Wi-Fi can feel restrictive after a week if you like variety. Couples who want granite boulders, mountain hikes and Creole restaurants should base themselves on Mahé or Praslin instead, perhaps adding a few nights on Denis at the end. Those who prefer a large resort with several restaurants and a livelier pool scene may be happier elsewhere. For a barefoot honeymoon with nature at its center, Denis is hard to fault.

Insider tips

  1. Book a Beachfront Spa Cottage for the in-cottage massage pavilion.
  2. Pack to the 15 kg limit and leave extra bags at Mahé airport.
  3. Check the flight days before booking international flights.
  4. Download books and films before you go; Wi-Fi is limited to public areas.

FAQ

Denis Private Island questions, answered

Is there Wi-Fi on Denis Island?

Only in limited areas. There is no mobile signal and no in-room internet or TV. Wi-Fi is available around the restaurant, bar and reception, so you can check messages when you need to. Most couples see this as part of the appeal and leave their phones in the cottage for most of the stay.

How do we get to Denis Island?

Fly into Seychelles International (SEZ) on Mahé, then take the island's small charter flight of about 30 minutes. The return flight is reserved automatically when your booking is confirmed. Flights do not operate every day and the luggage limit is 15 kg per person, so plan your arrival dates and packing carefully.

Which cottage is best for a honeymoon?

The Beachfront Spa Cottage, at about 150 square meters, is the best balance. It has direct beach access, a king bed, an outdoor shower and a private massage pavilion. Deluxe Beach Cottages are a good value alternative, while the single Beach Villa, with its plunge pool, is the choice if you want a private pool.

Is Denis Island kid-free?

No. The island welcomes families and can be busier with children during school holidays. With only 23 cottages and one villa spread along the beach, though, it never feels crowded and there is plenty of privacy. Couples who want quieter dates should avoid major holiday periods.

What is there to do on Denis Island?

Swim and snorkel from the beach, cycle the sandy tracks, visit the farm and lighthouse, meet giant tortoises, join guided nature walks and go diving or sport fishing off the edge of the Seychelles Bank. The spa offers massages and the rest of the time is for reading, napping and swimming.
