Chiva-Som

A beachfront wellness retreat where the spa is the itinerary

Chiva-Som is the honeymoon for couples who want to come home rested rather than sunburned and hungover. It is a 54-room wellness retreat on the beach in Hua Hin, about three hours south of Bangkok. It has been one of Asia's best-known destination spas for decades. You do not book a room here so much as a program: three wellness meals a day, a health consultation, one treatment for every night of your stay, unlimited classes and full use of the pools, saunas and gym.

That structure is the appeal and the catch. If the two of you have just survived a year of wedding planning, handing over your days to a team of therapists, nutritionists and trainers is a deep relief. If you picture a honeymoon of cocktails at sunset and long, lazy room-service breakfasts, it will feel like the wrong trip. Wine and Champagne are poured only in the evening, phones stay out of public areas and the mood is hushed.

The minimum stay is three nights. The resort recommends seven or more. Guests must be at least 14, so you will see few families, though it is not formally kid-free.

Highlights at a glance

  • One treatment per night included in every stay
  • Three wellness meals a day and unlimited classes
  • Only 54 rooms, suites and Thai Pavilions
  • Beachfront gardens on the Gulf of Thailand
  • Personal Health and Wellness Advisor for each guest

Why Couples Choose Chiva-Som

The name blends Thai and Sanskrit words for life. The resort lives up to it. The grounds are a series of gardens and water features that open onto a long strip of Hua Hin beach, with quiet walkways linking the pavilions, the spa and the dining room. Days settle into an easy pattern: a morning class or a walk on the sand, a treatment before lunch, a nap, another session in the afternoon and an early dinner.

For a couple, the gift is time together without decisions. Your Health and Wellness Advisor builds the program around both of you, so one partner can spend the afternoon in a boxing or Pilates session while the other floats in the pool, then you meet for a couples massage. There is no pressure to do it all. Plenty of guests treat the schedule as a menu and simply sleep.

Rooms, Pavilions and Suites to Book

Accommodation falls into three groups. The right choice depends on whether you want the sea or the garden.

  • Thai Pavilions sit in the gardens and feel the most traditional, with teak details and a quiet, private air. The newer Thai Pavilion Suite adds an outdoor sala.
  • Ocean Side Rooms face the water. The Ocean Deluxe and Ocean Premium rooms add a dressing room and more living space, which matters on a longer stay.
  • Suites range from the top-floor Juniper Suite, with wide views over the Gulf of Thailand, to the Leelawadee Suite, the largest, with a garden and a private terrace with a jacuzzi.

For a honeymoon, an Ocean Deluxe Room is the sweet spot of price and space. If you are staying a week or more, a suite with its separate living room earns its premium. Bathroom amenities, pillows and even the scent of your oil burner can be tailored before you arrive.

What the Rate Includes

Chiva-Som prices its stays as packages rather than room rates, which makes it look expensive at first glance and better value once you read the fine print. According to the resort, every stay includes accommodation, your chosen retreat program, three wellness meals a day, a physical analysis and facial skin consultation, one treatment per night, unlimited group classes and daily activities and full access to the spa and fitness facilities. Retreat guests also get a wellness minibar and a daily laundry allowance.

What is not included: transport from Bangkok, extra treatments beyond your nightly allowance, alcohol and the 17.7 percent service charge and tax added to Thai rates. Treat total costs for two as roughly $1,000 to $1,500 a night in an Ocean Room once everything is added, more for suites. These figures are approximate and move with season and offers, so get a written quote.

Food, Drink and the Spa

Meals are part of the treatment. The kitchen cooks organic, whole-food menus that are lighter than typical resort fare but far from joyless: Thai curries, grilled fish, salads from the resort's own produce and desserts made without much refined sugar. Breakfast and lunch are relaxed. Dinner has a smart casual dress code for both partners, so pack one nice outfit each rather than a suitcase of options.

The spa is the heart of the place, with Thai massage, Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine treatments, physiotherapy, facials and body work. The water facilities include steam rooms, saunas, jacuzzis, cold plunge pools and swimming pools. A small library is one of the few spots where you can use a phone. Wine and Champagne are served after 6 p.m., which suits most couples once they settle in. The resort gently suggests cutting back on alcohol before you arrive.

Things to Do Beyond the Spa

Most guests barely leave, but the setting gives you options. The resort runs up to nine classes a day, from yoga and tai chi on the lawn to aqua aerobics, stretching and personal training. Early mornings are good for walking or jogging the beach before the heat builds.

Outside the gates, Hua Hin is an easy town to dip into. The night market is a short taxi ride away for grilled seafood and people-watching, though you may find its sugary drinks hard to reconcile with the week's menus. Khao Takiab's hilltop temple and the beach below it make a pleasant half-day. Sam Roi Yot National Park, to the south, has the cave temple of Phraya Nakhon, best visited early. The resort's guest relations team can arrange drivers. Mosquitoes are around at dusk, so pack repellent. If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices for Thailand.

Getting There

Most couples fly into Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) in Bangkok. The resort puts the distance at about 225 km. The drive can take up to three and a half hours depending on traffic, especially on Friday afternoons and holiday weekends heading out of the city. A private car is the comfortable option. Transfers are not part of the standard package, though some suite offers have included them on longer stays, so ask when you book.

Hua Hin Airport (HHQ) has a small number of domestic flights and is much closer, but schedules change often. Trains from Bangkok stop at Hua Hin's historic station, which is charming but slow. Check-in is from 3 p.m., so an overnight in Bangkok after a long-haul flight makes for a calmer arrival than driving straight down.

Is It Worth It?

For the right couple, yes. Once you add up three meals a day, a nightly treatment, classes and a personal program, Chiva-Som costs less than it first appears. The quality of the therapists is the reason people return again and again. It is an especially good choice as the second half of a Thailand trip, after the temples of Bangkok or the north have worn you out.

Pick elsewhere if you want a party, long boozy lunches or a private pool villa. Chiva-Som's rules on phones and drinking are gentle but real, the dining room has a shared table for solo guests and the atmosphere is quiet. Couples who want beach glamour with a spa on the side will be happier at one of Hua Hin's large resorts, such as Anantara, or on an island farther south.

Insider tips

  1. Book at least five nights: the first two are spent winding down and the program only starts to work after that.
  2. Ask for couples treatments to be scheduled side by side so your free time lines up.
  3. Spend your first night in Bangkok rather than driving down straight off a long-haul flight.
  4. Save your one dressy outfit for a dinner on the terrace, since the dress code is smart casual.

FAQ

Chiva-Som questions, answered

Is Chiva-Som a good choice for a honeymoon?

It suits couples who want rest, treatments and healthy food more than nightlife. You share a room, meals and couples massages, but much of the day follows a personal program. Wine and Champagne are available in the evening. If you want a party atmosphere or a private pool villa, choose a different Hua Hin resort.

What is included at Chiva-Som?

The resort says stays include accommodation, your retreat program, three wellness meals daily, a physical analysis and skin consultation, one treatment per night, unlimited group classes and daily activities, spa and gym access, a wellness minibar and a daily laundry allowance. Transport, alcohol, extra treatments and the service charge and tax are extra.

What is the minimum stay?

The minimum stay is three nights. Chiva-Som recommends seven or more nights for the full benefit of a program. Some offers require five or six nights to unlock extras such as treatment credits or transfers. Peak holiday periods such as New Year can carry supplements, including a compulsory gala dinner.

Are children allowed at Chiva-Som?

Guests must be at least 14 years old. Those aged 14 to 18 need a parent or guardian with them, along with signed consent forms. In practice, the resort is mostly couples and solo travelers. It is not marketed as kid-free, but you are very unlikely to see young children.

How far is Chiva-Som from Bangkok?

The resort is about 225 km from Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK), which takes up to three and a half hours by road depending on traffic. Book a private car through the resort or a reputable transfer company. Hua Hin Airport (HHQ) is much closer but has only a few domestic flights.
