The short answer

Margaret River suits food and wine lovers on a longer Australia honeymoon: serious Cabernet and Chardonnay cellar doors a few miles from surf beaches, caves and karri forest. Go November through April for warm, dry days, with vintage from February to April; September and October bring wildflowers and whales. Stays range from forest cottages to Pullman Bunker Bay Resort's beachside villas. It sits three hours from Perth with no US nonstops, so allow at least three nights. Don't miss a long winery lunch in Wilyabrup.

Best for
  • Couples who plan trips around food
  • Second-time visitors to Australia
  • Wine lovers who also want beaches
Maybe skip it if
  • You have under two weeks in Australia
  • You want to swim off every beach

Margaret River is a wine region on a long cape in the far southwest of Western Australia, about three hours south of Perth. What sets it apart from Napa or the Barossa is the coastline. The vineyards run almost to the edge of the Indian Ocean, so a day can move from a Chardonnay tasting to a surf beach to a limestone cave without much driving.

The region is known for Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, made in a Bordeaux-like maritime climate, along with crisp Semillon Sauvignon Blanc blends. There are well over a hundred cellar doors, many with excellent restaurants, plus breweries, cheese makers and chocolate shops.

For US couples, Margaret River is a longer trek than the east coast. There are no nonstop flights to Perth from the US, so it suits a second Australian trip or a longer honeymoon. In return you get a region that feels relaxed, uncrowded and beautifully local. Give it at least three nights, because the cellar doors, caves and beaches are spread along a cape about 60 miles long.

Why Honeymoon in Margaret River

Few wine regions are this close to the ocean. Most vineyards sit within a few miles of the coast, so lunch at a winery can be followed by a swim at a sheltered bay or a sunset walk on a clifftop. Couples who enjoy food and wine but also want beaches and outdoor activity tend to love it.

The wines are serious. Margaret River produces some of Australia's most respected Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. Many wineries run seated tastings or vineyard tours that give you time with the winemaker.

The scenery is varied. Towering karri forests, granite headlands, limestone caves and white beaches all sit within a short drive of each other. The pace is slow and friendly, with farm-gate stalls, art galleries and small breweries along the way. It feels like a place where Australians go on vacation, not one built for international tourists.

When to Go

The best time is November through April, when the weather is warm and dry. Days are typically in the 70s and low 80s, with cool evenings. Vintage, from February to April, is an exciting time to visit wineries, with harvest underway and some special events.

May brings cooler weather and autumn colors in the vines. June to August is winter, with rain and highs in the 60s. It is quiet, cozy and good for long lunches by the fire. Big swells make it a popular time for surfers.

September and October are spring, with wildflowers blooming across the region and whales migrating along the coast. Humpback and southern right whales pass Cape Leeuwin and Augusta in the cooler months, while Geographe Bay sees whales later in spring. Avoid Western Australian school holidays and Easter if you want fewer crowds.

Where to Stay

Base yourselves in the Wilyabrup area if wine is the focus. Many of the region's best wineries are here, so you can stay among the vines. Cape Lodge, a boutique hotel on its own vineyard and lake, is one of the most romantic options, though it is currently closed for redevelopment, so check before booking.

For beach access, look at Yallingup and Dunsborough in the north. Pullman Bunker Bay Resort sits beside a sheltered beach at the tip of Cape Naturaliste, with villas and a spa. Smaller guesthouses and private villas around Yallingup offer ocean views.

The town of Margaret River itself has cafés, restaurants and shops, making it a practical base if you want to walk to dinner. Rental cottages and chalets in the forest, often with fireplaces, are also popular with couples, particularly in winter.

Romantic Things to Do

Spend a day tasting wine. Pick three or four cellar doors and plan a long lunch at one of them. Hire a driver or join a small-group tour so you can both enjoy the wine.

Walk out on Busselton Jetty, which stretches almost 1.2 miles into Geographe Bay. A small train runs to the end, where an underwater observatory lets you see the coral and fish below.

Explore the caves. Lake Cave has a still underground lake that reflects the formations above. Jewel Cave is one of the largest show caves in the region.

Walk a section of the Cape to Cape Track, a coastal path that runs about 75 miles between the region's two lighthouses. Short sections make easy half-day hikes.

Drive through the Boranup karri forest and finish at Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse, where the Indian and Southern Oceans meet.

Getting There and Around

From the US, fly to Perth through an Asian hub or via Sydney or Melbourne. There are no nonstop flights from the US to Perth. From Perth, drive about three hours south to Margaret River, or take a coach.

Busselton Margaret River Airport, about 45 minutes from the town of Margaret River, has had direct Jetstar flights from Melbourne and Sydney. This can save time if you are coming from the east coast, though schedules vary by season.

You need a car to explore. The region is spread out and public transportation is limited. Roads are good and distances short. Watch for kangaroos at dawn and dusk.

If you plan to drink at wineries, book a driver or tour for those days. Australian drink-driving limits are strict.

Food and Drink

Margaret River is one of the best food regions in Australia. Many wineries have restaurants that serve long, multi-course lunches with views over the vines. Booking ahead is essential, particularly on weekends.

Local produce includes marron, a freshwater crayfish, as well as venison, olive oil and cheese. Dunsborough and Busselton have good seafood. Fish and chips eaten on the beach at sunset is a local tradition.

Breweries and cideries are common. Many offer casual meals and outdoor seating, good for an afternoon break between wineries.

For wines, focus on Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Semillon Sauvignon Blanc blends. Pioneering estates such as Vasse Felix, Cullen and Leeuwin Estate are good starting points, alongside smaller producers that may only open by appointment.

Honeymoon Tips

Do not try to visit too many wineries in one day. Three or four, with a long lunch, is plenty.

Book winery lunches before you arrive, particularly during summer and school holidays.

Swim at sheltered beaches such as Meelup and Bunker Bay. Many surf beaches have strong currents and are better for watching than swimming.

Allow at least three nights in the region. Four or five lets you balance wine, beaches and caves.

If you are short on time, combine Margaret River with Perth and Rottnest Island, a short ferry from Fremantle, for a Western Australia trip with no extra domestic flights.

FAQ

Margaret River honeymoon FAQ

How far is Margaret River from Perth?

About three hours by car, roughly 170 miles south. The drive is easy. Many couples break the trip with a stop in Bunbury or Busselton. Alternatively, direct domestic flights to Busselton Margaret River Airport have operated from Melbourne and Sydney, saving the drive from Perth.

Is Margaret River worth adding to an Australia honeymoon?

It is if you love wine and food and have at least two weeks. Because Perth is far from the east coast, it adds time and cost. For couples on a shorter trip, the Barossa Valley or Hunter Valley may be easier to fit in with Sydney or Melbourne.

What wines is Margaret River known for?

Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay are the region's headline wines. Semillon Sauvignon Blanc blends are also popular. Many wineries make smaller amounts of Shiraz, Merlot and other varieties, so tastings offer plenty of range. Look out for older Cabernet vintages poured at the cellar door, which show how well these wines age.

When is whale season in Margaret River?

Whales pass the coast from around June to December. Humpbacks and southern right whales are often seen near Augusta in the cooler months. Later in spring they gather around Geographe Bay. Whale-watching cruises run during the season and are a good addition to a winter or spring trip.

Can we swim at Margaret River's beaches?

Yes, at sheltered beaches such as Meelup, Bunker Bay and Eagle Bay on the northern coast. Many beaches along the western coast have powerful surf and rips, so they are better for watching surfers. Always check local conditions and swim at patrolled beaches when possible.
